They are still hugely in debt

False. California's short-term budgetary debt is at zero. Long-term debt obligations are modest. This is due to years of budget surpluses which have been used to both save funds to cover future recessions and deficits; eliminating short-term debt entirely; and reduce long-term debt obligations to manageable levels thru pre-funding of pensions. But, Alan wants to believe in his false narrative and keep posting it over and over.

which will continue for another three years according to that official.

It's a forecast of what future budgets might look like not what they will be; they're budget forecasters and not time travelers. The finance director addressed possible scenarios for budget adjustments to offset reductions in revenue if they occur due to recession. They may choose to run a deficit for a few years rather than cut spending on important priorities as a better long-term plan.

I mentioned this in a post yesterday. "The state has shown an ability and willingness to make adjustments when needed, but could choose to run a deficit if it believes that will provide better stability and growth for economic conditions in the long term." Last night, I heard Biden make a similar argument in his Covid economic relief plan in addressing the debt that would be incurred.

Biden: "I know what I just described does not come cheaply, but failure to do so will cost us dearly. The consensus among leading economists is we simply can not afford not to do what I’m proposing. Independent, respected institutions from around the world, from the Federal Reserve to the International Monetary Fund have underscored the urgency. Even Wall Street firms have reinforced the logic. If we invest now boldly, smartly and with unwavering focus on American workers and families, we will strengthen our economy, reduce inequity and put our nation’s longterm finances on the most sustainable course. And where we’re making permanent investments, recurring investments."

rich people who are leaving the state in droves.

To Tech who asked how many have left in response to my hyperbolic comment about "droves", it's calculated that .04% of high-income people left within two years after California's 2012 tax increase.

My point was there are too many "aha gotcha" posts here about non-important factoids that some people use as an excuse to personally attack another poster's veracity... It leaves no room for hyperbole

You can see an example above of what Alan likes to call "hyperbole". When his "hyperbole" is called a false assertion, he gets offended and claims that you're calling him a liar and plays the victim.

It's a turn-off and chases people away from LuLa. The site is dying because of it.

Fact check his assertions too often and he plays the ultimate victim and claims "The site is dying because of it." Now that is some real hyperbole!

The claim my 10% was a lie because it was really 9.7% was one of them. We're talking about an incidental statistic yet it's turned into something that resembles insurrection only to demean the poster.  It destroys the conversation and creates unnecessary insults and defensive responses

Nope  - if it's dying it's because people keep repeating things they have been told many times are false. Your figure of 10% was wrong for reasons explained at length, and you were specifically not called a liar or otherwise insulted.

He said, "It's just another of Alan's false assertions."   Another false assertion?  In effect, he's accusing me of lying all the time.  There's no other way to read that. Your defense of him saying he specifically didn't use the word "liar" is just wasting my time.  I know what he meant. So did everyone else. I have no interest in any longer reading what he has to say or anyone else who attacks me personally.

Well after constant no openings when trying to reserve an appt., my wife and I are now scheduled for the first vaccine shot Feb 10th here in New Jersey.  If they don't run out.  ;)

Congratulations, Alan! Do you have to go there exactly on Feb 10th or is this just an approximate date?

A reasonable person might think that implies some tendency to play fast and loose with facts too often and that more careful attention to what one posts might be desirable. Unless of course, your desire is to defend what you write from criticism behind a shield of victimhood by claiming you're being called a liar all the time.

I'll continue to counter assertions that I find false or misleading and call them false or misleading assertions. Alan will continue doing what he does.

We have exact times scheduled ten minutes apart.  It's about 35 minutes drive time.  Not bad.

I probably could have gotten an earlier date.  What happened was the first three dates from today were busy as I figured they would be.  Since opening it up to everyone over age 16, including smokers, the whole world is trying to register for the shot.  So rather than going day by day and checking each one, I just jumped ahead on the calendar to Feb 10 and amazingly all the times showed up as available for the whole day.  Fortunately, my wife was online with her phone so we were able to book appts together.  I should have been more patient and continued from day to day.

There is so much confusion with the sites.  All of them are so busy, they often just stop.  Others don't link properly.  When you call NJ state clearing, they tell you to make an appt with your county.  We went through a private hospital group.  How are they doing things in Canada?

I understand that they make the second appt for the follow-up shot at the first appt.  So it shouldn't be a headache to schedule, assuming they don't run out.  I understand we're getting the Moderna vaccine.  Frankly, I can't wait.  Hopeful by early March, we'll both be immune and be able to live life again more normally.  I need a haircut.   8)

It seems that the vaccinations in Canada are proceeding at a slower pace than in USA, mainly due to small quantity of available vaccines. Just heard that a friend's mother who is 93 in a long-care home got her shot this week, so it may take a few more months before the younger seniors will get vaccinated. Mass deliveries of vaccines will start to arrive in March.

Sacramento man resigns from positions in California Republican Assembly due to participation in U.S. Capitol riot

https://www.abc10.com/republican-leader-sacramento-resigns-due-to-participation-in-us-capitol-riot

A Sacramento man has resigned from his positions in the California Republican Assembly (CRA), a Republican volunteer organization, after it was learned he participated in the violent, pro-Trump siege on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6.

Jorge Riley served as Corresponding Secretary for the State Board of the California Republican Assembly and President of the Sacramento Chapter, the CRA confirmed. On Thursday, Riley resigned from both positions after photos and video posted on his personal Facebook page showed him actively participating in the raid.

In a video posted on Reddit, Riley is answering questions outside the U.S. Capitol building, which he had reportedly stormed just moments prior.

[The California Republican Assembly (CRA) is a conservative California Republican activist group. It is the oldest and largest grassroots volunteer organization chartered by the California Republican Party, and is the California affiliate of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA).]

Below is an a two-minute video of him describing what he did in breaching the Capitol and what he did inside...

My 98 year old mother in law in an assisted living place is suppose to get hers tomorrow.  Is Canada going to change the schedule of who gets it earlier?

In BC the top of the priority list is care home patients and workers, nurses and doctors and remote indigenous communities. From there I believe it breaks down by age bracket.

There is new video of Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman that many have seen being chased up a series of stairs. The earlier video, that went viral, was shot by a reporter from some distance behind the officer. The new video was shot by someone in the mob storming the Capitol. It shows a much more frightening perspective of the scene. A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced a bill to award Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal for luring the mob away from lawmakers.

“Where They Countin’ the Votes?!”: New Video Details Tense Moments as Capitol Mob Sought Out Lawmakers

https://www.propublica.org/article/capitol-eugene-goodman

New video, found in an archive of data uploaded to Parler, includes a fresh look at the mob’s confrontation with Eugene Goodman, the officer credited for luring rioters away from senators during the early moments of the Capitol riot.

Now, ProPublica has uncovered new footage — amid a trove of content archived from the now-shuttered social platform Parler — that reveals the raw moments before Officer Eugene Goodman’s actions. The clip, recorded minutes after crowds breached a barrier outside, allows the public to see and hear new details from a turbulent day that ultimately led to President Donald Trump’s second impeachment.

As the just-under-two-minute recording begins and the door is opened, cheers are heard from crowds of demonstrators gathered outside. Once inside, the mob fans out, passing a Senate appointments desk and heading toward a bank of elevators.

Half of the video depicts the showdown between Goodman and the angry mob, and lets viewers see more clearly the size of the crowd and its rage. “Where they countin’ the votes?!” yells a man in the crowd repeatedly after rioters approach Goodman, who was blocking a corridor and stairs that lead to the Senate floor and other key offices.

Posting this for no reason other than there is only so much hate and ugliness that one can stand to hear and see. I hope these are the kinds of scenes we will see from Washington D.C. again at some future point.

July 4th, 2000 - Ray Charles - America The Beautiful (Live in D.C.)

Oh beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife
Who more than self, their country loved
And mercy more than life
America, America may God thy gold refine
'Til all success be nobleness
And every gain divine

Of course! Do you think these guys are smart or something?

Best part is many of them are saying, effectively, ‘Trump told me to do this”.  Gonna go down well at the trial.
