The sun and the wind is free, as opposed to fossil fuels that require mining and transport. I don't like bird-killing windmills, nor solar farms on agricultural land, but the amount of 'free' space on all roof-tops around the world, for solar panels, is enormous. And the amount of arid land and deserts available for solar farms is also enormous. Let's exploit that situation for the benefit of us all.
Sun and wind are free but not the infrastructure to create and transport the electricity created. As Germany found out, their rates are 2 1/2 times America's despite a huge portion of their generation is green.

New York Gov Cuomo announce a plan in 2019 for offshore wind electric generation.  The initial billions in construction costs will cost each end users thousands of dollars to build it replacing fossil fuel plants that have already been paid for.  The final bill will surely be higher as government never meets their original budgets for construction.  The windmill cost doesn't include billions more for fossil plants that will be required to supplement when wind isn't available.

In order to fool the public as to the real costs, surcharges will be added to standard electric rates of other subscribers in the state who won't get the benefit of the green electricity.  In effect, surcharges for fossil fuel generation will pay for the huge costs of the wind generators.  But these won't be shown on subscriber's bills to avoid embarrassing questions from the public.  So users won't see that they are paying a lot for "free" wind.  They're going to bury the surcharges in the regular KWH charges.  So, like Germany, overall rates will go up a lot to pay for all this free energy.

It's a con job.  The media is at fault because they refuse to tell the public the truth about the real costs and go along with these inane plans.

Anwser since you ask; good and absolutely yes. It will be many months before the vaccine (tell us Alan factually, which vaccine that's yet approved) is in everyone IF everyone is willing to be vaccinated. Who currently ”running” the US has been an anti vaccine mouthpiece?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.immunizationinfo.com/trumps-anti-vaccination-views-against-public-opinion-study/amp/
President Donald Trump’s criticism of vaccines is at odds with the views of most Americans, who overwhelmingly support vaccination requirements for public school children, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.
The economy and stock markets are going to crash under his watch.  The republicans will take back Congress in 2022 because of it.

[/quote] But you still need fossil fuel plants to back up wind generation when the wind isn't blowing.  Have those prices been included in the overall costs?  That's what happened in Germany which actually raised the cost of generating so-called "free" electricity.  Also, the Germans now have a new problem. The wind generators are being replaced after only twenty years.  They've worn out.  So now they have to pay for disposing of the old one, and environmental problem as well, and the cost for building and installing new replacements.  Fossil fuel plants last much longer.

Fossil fuels also require infrastructure to create (mine the coal and oil) and transport both the raw fossil fuels and then the electricity produced.

The raw fuel from the sun requires no transportation, just the electricity produced.

During the change-over from fossil fuels to renewables there will inevitably be an initial surge in costs, which Germany is currently experiencing. A similar situation applied to the change from film cameras to digital cameras. The first digital cameras were enormously expensive, but as technology improved, the price of digital cameras came down significantly, and the quality of digital cameras increased enormously.

We can expect the same to happen with solar power, battery storage and electric vehicles. Try to be positive, Alan.  ;)

What about Europe?

You used the magic words: "What about..."

"Whataboutism is particularly associated with Soviet and Russian propaganda.[4][5][6] When criticisms were leveled at the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the Soviet response would often be "What about ..." followed by instancing of an event or situation in the Western world.[7][8][9] According to Russian writer, chess grandmaster and political activist Garry Kasparov, it is a word that was coined to describe the frequent use of a rhetorical diversion by Soviet apologists and dictators, who would counter charges of their oppression, "massacres, gulags, and forced deportations" by invoking American slavery, racism, lynchings, etc.[10] Whataboutism has been used by other politicians and countries as well."

No you don't - as Ray has already said, you just need some means of storing energy, such as batteries, hydroelectricity, liquid air, whatever.

I have no problem with green energy. I just don't want government deciding how, where, and which technologies to use.  Let private industry and free markets figure it out based on supply and demand.  Taxpayers shouldn't be paying the bill.  Government makes terrible mistakes allocating funding to winners and losers that they select.  We didn't have some government plan to develop the digital camera market. Nikon and Canon did fine.

When I started designing and installing energy management systems in the 1970's, the US Post Office office decided to build their own.  They could never keep up with technology created by private industry.  It was a joke and they eventually abandoned the idea and bought privately made systems.

Well, I didn't want to tell you but I'm a retired Soviet spy.  I can't tell you everything I know about this or I'd have to kill you.  :)
In any case, Les is Canadian and many here aren't Americans.  Yet they always seem to pick on US failings and problems totally ignoring similar problems and issues in Europe.  It would be nice if Europeans here would look inwards as well as pointing fingers at us.

If you are still following the story, here is a little more about the postal worker, his fraud affidavit, and Project Veritas. It turns out Salon listened to the secret two hour tape of his interrogation by the IG's office, and, well, you can read all about it if you are interested.

Project Veritas could face legal liability for postal worker's ballot fraud allegations, experts say

https://www.salon.com/2020/11/14/project-veritas-could-face-legal-liability-for-postal-workers-ballot-fraud-allegations-experts-say/

Needless to say, this affidavit, and others like it, are no longer the lynchpin of Team Trump's legal strategy in Pennsylvania. I remember reading the other day that one of Trump's lawyers filed a suit and attached a couple of hundred affidavits. The judge asked him if he could prove any of the fraud allegations in any of the affidavits, and he responded that he couldn't, so the judge tossed the case. I think these were the same couple of hundred affidavits that Kayleigh what's her name was waving around dramatically at her press conference when she said she was appearing "in her personal capacity".

Large scale storage is not yet available to handle the huge power requirements of cities.  I recall reading that Tesla would have to furnish batteries from its battery plant, the largest in the world,  for something like 300 years just to meet 1% of the electric needs of the world.  There's no place in America for hydro; doubt there is in GB where you live.  Here's an interesting story.  when I was involved in energy in the 1970's in NYC, there was a plan to put a generator under the East River off mid Manhattan.  When the river, really a tidal estuary, ran south they had this generator that would provide electricity for a small food market nearby.  Then when the flow switched directions when the tide changed, they'd turn the underwater generator to the other direction and continue producing electricity.  Problem was, because the river flowed both ways as the tides changed, there would be a slack period of about and hour every six when the water didn't move as it switched directions.  So the market lost power during the slack periods and the ice cream melted.

Then there was a plan for using electricity at night to make ice in huge quantities.  Then, during the day, when electricity charges were higher, they would use the ice to provide air conditioning to the building.  Another project that failed.  There was no place cheap in land-starved Manhattan to store the ice.

As some of you may have noticed, I have been watching Trump's Twitter feed for the past couple of days. What a cesspool of retweets and videos. No wonder Trump doesn't have time to deal will the pandemic. There is not enough time in the day to wade through all that shit. I take it Trump supporters don't have lives. It's all yours.

Your efforts in this regard are heroic, but please take care. I'm a big believer in intellectual osmosis, we can take on the attributes of the people we listen to and spend time with. Don't read or listen to the stuff for more than a few minutes at a time, as it can be an assault on our psyches and it is necessary to take the time to recover. Talk to sane people frequently throughout the day, better yet spend time with a dog or cat. If you can, observe the behaviour of ravens, those guys know what's what, it's uncanny.

Stay strong. :)

Well, Trump will be gone here.  Do you think Biden will do better?  The vaccine will help everywhere.

Once the damage is done, it's hard to undo. Trump's continuous making fun of wearing masks and his rally's with no social distancing lead many people to think that is the way life should be during the pandemic. This has been ingrained into many minds over the past 8 months or so...very hard to change those minds.

An interesting snippet from the article"

When an agent asked Hopkins in the recording if he would still swear to the affidavit's claim that the postmaster "was back-dating ballots," he replied: "At this point? No."

I've not seen the original affidavit. I can't find it online in a quick search. Does anyone know if it said the Postmaster WAS backdating ballots?  I think I saw were it says he only heard the postmaster talk about backdating.

I have the transcript of a 1902 meeting of blacksmiths from a meeting they attended. They had a good laugh about automobiles. They scoffed at the idea that those unreliable cars could ever work properly. The idea that companies all over the world, which didn't exist yet, would dig holes in the ground to find crude oil, refine it, and find a way to transport the refined product to every street corner of nearly every city was such spectacular nonsense that they had to adjourn the meeting for 15 meeting because of stomach cramps from laughing.

I hope that you don't believe that your government didn't help out the oil companies in those early days. Or today.

Isn't it a weird thing that the very same people who swear by the almost magical properties of the "market" will constantly preach to the rest of us, ad infinitum, that none of the new ideas that are emerging will ever work, despite the fact that those new ideas are transforming everything we do almost every single day.

The markets and the economy did fine under Obama and Clinton. How do you explain that?

The 1% are richer than they ever were, and were so before Trump's election. How do you explain that?

You keep predicting economic doom, end of the world stuff, but it hasn't happened. How do you explain that?
We're drowning in debt like never before.  The Fed's balance sheet went from $.8 trillion in 2008 to around $4T in 2014 and now has jumped to over $7T just in the last few months. We're printing until the cows come home.  Our debt's run from about 55% of GDP in 2000 to 130% current, and still rising.  The rich own assets so they'll survive.  But the rest of us poor schnooks can't afford the debt and inflation that's coming, well already here and rising.  To make matters worse, industry is being shut down as demanded by Democrats  and the left because of Covid.

I hope you're right.  But I have my doubts.  There are a lot of more qualified people then me saying the same thing, that we're in a bubble that's going to pop.  If it happens, the Democrats and Biden will get blamed.  Trump got out at the right time.  :)

Yes I recall Alan predicting shootings in the streets as people get desperate because their families are starving. I wonder how life is when you always see the negative of things.
