About TVA

"The Tennessee Valley Authority is a corporate agency of the United States that provides electricity for business customers and local power companies serving 10 million people in parts of seven southeastern states. TVA receives no taxpayer funding, deriving virtually all of its revenues from sales of electricity. In addition to operating and investing its revenues in its electric system, TVA provides flood control, navigation and land management for the Tennessee River system and assists local power companies and state and local governments with economic development and job creation."

Trump today said “As a result of Operation Warp Speed, Pfizer announced on Monday that its China virus vaccine was more than 90% effective. ...Pfizer said it wasn’t part of Warp Speed, but that turned out to be an unfortunate misrepresentation.”
No, what Trump said was.
THE FACTS: Pfizer did not accept government money to develop, test or expand manufacturing capacity under Operation Warp Speed to quickly find a vaccine and treatments for Covid-19.
Pfizer partnered with the vaccine’s original developer, Germany’s BioNTech, in March and the following month announced the first human study in Germany. The White House announced Operation Warp Speed in May.

Isn't Warp Speed fast enough to go back in time and support the German Muslim immigrants who invented it?

As some of you may have noticed, I have been watching Trump's Twitter feed for the past couple of days. What a cesspool of retweets and videos. No wonder Trump doesn't have time to deal will the pandemic. There is not enough time in the day to wade through all that shit. I take it Trump supporters don't have lives. It's all yours.

I remember someone here that still posts said to wake him up when the deaths reach 60,000.

At the current rate it will be 300,000 by Dec 2020, and 600,000 by Dec 2021.

That's exactly the point. Why bother posting anything if you refuse to address the issue and just say " What about Obama / Clinton / Hitler / whatever ".

"What’s worse, because wind and solar are variable (they produce electricity only when the wind blows or the sun shines), they must be paired with other energy sources to support demand, and these are almost always fossil fuels. In the absence of enough nuclear energy, renewables are effectively prolonging the life of coal and gas plants that can produce power around the clock."

As I've mentioned before, there are two basic ways the intermittency problem of renewables can be solved.

(1) The construction of long-distance, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power lines, underground and/or under sea, in order to transfer electricity from where the sun is shining to where it is not.

(2) Battery storage, and Hydro-electric storage where excess electricity, during sunny times, is used to recharge batteries and pump water back into the lake.

Of course, battery storage is currently more expensive than fossil fuel energy, but as research into the improvement of battery storage continues, it's reasonable to assume that manufacturing costs will continue to fall and durability will continue to rise.

For example:
"Electric car maker Tesla Inc TSLA.O plans to introduce a new low-cost, long-life battery in its Model 3 sedan in China later this year or early next that it expects will bring the cost of electric vehicles in line with gasoline models, and allow EV batteries to have second and third lives in the electric power grid."

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-tesla-batteries-exclusive-idUSKBN22Q1WC

"Tesla battery researchers around Jeff Dahn have presented updated test results for their battery cells. Instead of one million miles, the batteries are now expected to last 10,000 cycles and provide traction power for more than two million miles – that’s about 3.2 million kilometers."

https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/19/tesla-researchers-present-battery-with-2-million-mile-lifecycle/

Each part of the planet is different, so in different areas different options should exploited. For example, the State (Island) of Tasmania in Australia has lots of Hydro-electricity because of its numerous rivers and dams

"Basslink is a 400kV DC electricity interconnector that allows the trade of electricity between Tasmania and the National Electricity Market. The interconnector is rated to transmit 500 megawatts (MW) of energy on a continuous basis in either direction and up to 630MW export from Tasmania for limited periods." (Across the Bass Strait, which is the ocean separating Tasmania from the Australian mainland).

http://www.basslink.com.au/basslink-interconnector/#:~:text=Basslink%20is%20a%20400kV%20DC,and%20the%20National%20Electricity%20Market.

"Approximately 90 per cent of our (Tasmanian) electricity generation is from renewable resources, putting us in a unique position to pursue national opportunities. Approximately 10 per cent of our renewable energy comes from wind, and the remainder from hydro-electric generation, which delivers base load and peaking electricity for Tasmania’s major industrials, small businesses and households."

This is the future, Joe. Don't get into 'denial' about the potential progress from technological research. The scare about climate change is the main driver of this research. It's a religion with some very beneficial outcomes.  ;)

The problem now is with economies in trouble, and treasuries broke, there's little money for implementation.    Installing HVDC grids to replace existing are hugely expensive.  Dams and water storage are already done with in advanced countries  like the USA.  In fact, some dams are being ripped down to restore natural river flows to "save" the ecology, salmon runs, etc. Batteries will get better. But I've read that they use enormous minerals and have high construction requirements.  Disposal is a problem as well.

But the main issue is where does all the  money come from to implement? Green energy is not free.

What about Europe?

About the same as USA, some countries better than others.
Europe totals: 262,000 dead now, projection for year end 2020 - 300,000, year end 2021 - 600,000.

The sun and the wind is free, as opposed to fossil fuels that require mining and transport. I don't like bird-killing windmills, nor solar farms on agricultural land, but the amount of 'free' space on all roof-tops around the world, for solar panels, is enormous. And the amount of arid land and deserts available for solar farms is also enormous. Let's exploit that situation for the benefit of us all.

Alan,

you put too much faith into the trendy terms. First it was the herd immunity, now the vaccine hope. The best way to avoid or reduce the infections is still avoidance of crowds and wearing the masks.

182,904 new COVID cases today, including TechTalk's friend. 1394 new deaths today. One projection suggests that we could be at 320,000 dead by the end of the year. Crickets from the President, other than an elaborate press conference in the Rose Garden, flags fluttering, first remarking that it was a beautiful day, and then taking credit for Pfizer's progress on a vaccine. Crickets from my Republican governor. Two days ago, my Republican governor suggested that the unemployed should consider going back to school.

Wow I go away for a day to shoot and there's a tidal wave of posts to read to catch up.

A quick story about my experience yesterday with Covid.  I went to shoot in a small town in NE Indiana. We go there to work a lot.  So much in fact that we are given access to the factory like we are employees.  The product we were to shoot was located in a partially empty building away for workers and we had no in-person interaction with any staff.  We kept a couple of overhead doors partially open to provide airflow even though it was brisk outside.  We brown bagged lunch.  Overall we felt pretty safe.

So I texted my contact in the Marketing Dept. to tell him we were on the job and I asked him how things were going.  He proceeded to tell me that a  huge chunk of the Marketing Dept. as well as others in the Corp. office were out with Covid, either had it or were exposed via their kids in school or their spouses.  My contact told me that even he had to quarantine because his dentist had Covid and exposed him.  My contact did not get sick.  I didn't ask how they were doing in the production side, but if I had to venture a guess I would suspect they were having issues as well.

We have been concerned about this area all year.  Mask wearing in the general surrounding community is pretty low.  There is a very large Amish community and they are a pretty big part of the workforce for these factories.  I see very low mask usage for them, but thats not to say the non Amish any better.  This county has 300-400 new cases a day, 13,000 total cases and 186 deaths.  Currently they are between 1-6 new deaths per day depending on the day.  Roughly 200k residents in this county.

Lucky for us this is the last Motorhome or RV we have to shoot until next spring.  This is normal for us,and we generally don't work from Nov. to late Feb. or March anyway.  So we are going back into "mostly stay at home lockdown" mode.  Hopefully we can ride this out safely.  I was to have some surgery but thats on the back burner now.  We are fairly well stocked with supplies but I think we will hit the stores mid week and lay in a bit more, just in case.  We have been shopping on a regular basis in person all along but I'm considering going to internet ordering and in person pickup from the grocery.  For my mom, going to the store once a week is about the only thing besides a walk that lets her get out of the house.  I'm not sure I can take that away from her.  She has an interesting outlook, She says, I'm 90 and I don't want to die, but I still want to have a little bit of life as well.

Yea Covid is real but there is a big part of the world, at least in my little slice, that are still saying screw it.

Anwser since you ask; good and absolutely yes. It will be many months before the vaccine (tell us Alan factually, which vaccine that's yet approved) is in everyone IF everyone is willing to be vaccinated. Who currently ”running” the US has been an anti vaccine mouthpiece?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.immunizationinfo.com/trumps-anti-vaccination-views-against-public-opinion-study/amp/
President Donald Trump’s criticism of vaccines is at odds with the views of most Americans, who overwhelmingly support vaccination requirements for public school children, according to a new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center.
