I have a slightly different take. In 1980, I bought this Honda station wagon. It got 40-45 miles/gallon. I know because I kept track of my fuel efficiency every time I filled up. So that was forty years ago. A while back this idiot woman rear-ended me as I was turning into my driveway because she was futzing with her phone and totaled the car I was then driving. So I had to get a new car. None of the cars I looked at, and I looked at a lot, got 40-45 miles/gallon like my Honda did 40 years ago. The Toyota Prius came close, but while I am theoretically in favor of electric cars, I didn't want to by the Prius. The fact is all of the cars I looked at were gigantic (an exaggeration), and got 20-30 miles/gallon (no exaggeration). I guess the cars are more efficient than they were back then, but they are so much bigger they still get lousy gas mileage. Why? People want big cars and they are willing to accept lousy gas mileage. Gas is significantly higher than it was 40 years ago, but apparently operating cost doesn't figure into the equation. You know what is hilarious? When you are in Europe and you happen to see an American car parked on the street next to European cars. It looks like a battle tank. And I am not even talking about one of those Suburbans that can transport an entire football team and still have room for the cheerleaders.
What's wrong with cheerleaders?

Then we has more than enough gas and people wanted room and power again. Then gas got expensive and big was out of vogue.  Now we have plenty of cheap gas and people want the room and power.

That's a dream you must have had. People were buying battle tank cars a few years ago when gas was $4-5/gallon.

I knew you were going to say that. In fact, I was tempted to take the reference to cheerleaders out, but said no, let's see if Alan makes a comment about it. Sure enough, I was right.

Some were.  Some were not.  Many were still just drivng what they had.  In 2007 for example the top two vehicles were pickups, and the rest of the top ten were small cars except for a pick up at # 6.  Pretty much the same in 2012 except that the #6 pickup slipped to #7.  Gas prices pretty much peaked then

That's not true.   But I'm sure you're not lying.  Maybe just misinformed.  I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I'm more charitable than a lot of people here. In any case, when the price of gas went up, I remember Americans scrambling for small cars.  How much the US auto industry was really hurt because they didn't have the smaller cars and rushed to build them although they made most of their money from bigger cars.  Then the price of gas went down again, and everything went back to normal.  Americans bought big cars again, huge SUV's, and the American makers satisfied that thirst.  The F150 pickup truck which sucks the gas tank dry is Ford's biggest seller and profit maker.

In any case, who would want to drive in one of those little sissy European Volkswagens or Fiats? Can you imagine it pulling an RV?  ::)

Thank you. I should have been more restrained with my use of the word "people" without an appropriate modifier.

I have no idea what time period(s) you are referring too. Also, our memories differ. I do agree the Ford F-150 is a popular vehicle and is not fuel efficient.

You linked to the NASA website because you didn't know crap about the subject and were intent on trashing Alan.
I linked to NASA yes. The NASA link is what it is, if you don't like it, contact NASA. I wasn't trashing Alan, I was correcting him again in a sentence that was assumptive, a generalization and, incorrect. According to NASA.

You had know idea what the truth really was.
Another 'fact' you made up sir? You have no idea what I know; you do know what URL I posted. Basically Alan was wrong, but of course, you still can't answer the question asked (the question you did answer, about cheques was equally incorrect so I can see why you're not willing to go there).
Hands up who called Alan a liar, and who is accepting Craig's answer about who wrote the Cheques (even Alan can vote but he will not).

From the article and video you linked too.  This is what AOC said:

""Millennials, and Gen z, and all these folks that come after us, are looking up and we're like 'the world will end in 12 years if we don't address climate change, and your biggest issue is how are we gonna pay for it?'"

Thanks for posting it, Alan. You obviously misinterpreted her statement.
She didn't state that the world will end in 12 years. She projected that some of the future generations might say so if we don't address the climate change. But since Biden is addressing the climate change problem, now you don't have to worry.

I don't recall the exact dates either, but it could have been in the 1980's.  It was when foreign manufacturers really started to get a jump on the American market.  Actually, I bought a Datsun (now Nissan) roadster, a little two-seater with a four-speed manual shift in 1967.  That was a fun car.

Here a link about the price of gasoline in America.  For the most part, gas has been a bargain in the US accounting for the big gas guzzlers we love to drive.  Let's face it.  Driving in the command seat of a huge SUV with your coffee in it the holder next to you on at 70mph on an American highway is a lot better than a little Fiat.  Although I do miss my Datsun too.

I guess I've been out of the Bronx for too long to understand a fellow Bronxite. But I'm glad Biden is in charge.  I feel safer already.  I just hope we can get to our scheduled 2nd vaccine shot tomorrow with all the snow we're getting here now in New Jersey. I'd like to be around to actually see the climate change.  :)

If it happens.

I am glad you enjoyed your ownership of the Datsun (Nissan) roadster.

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind the next time I fill up and the gas pump dollar amount counter is spinning out of control.

Antiseptic for the nose apparently has been invented.  Spray it in your nose and it kills 99.9% of the viruses there.  Now, why didn't Trump think of that?

OK, next question:
What were the first words uttered from the surface of the moon?
Was it: "I want to thank all the US citizens who wrote the cheques for this ride"?  :o
Or "I wish I could thank NASA for building this ride"?

Don't be silly.

Ah wait.. human nature is immutable, so you can't help it.  Carry on.

So we are to believe AOC thinks the world will end in 12 years and that she really is that stupid.

Thanks for clarifying.
