In the first 5-6 minutes of this David Frum podcast, he relates a story of Switzerland making personal gifts to Trump that resulted in lowering of tariffs for them, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb_2J7-Es6g. I had not heard about this specific episode. Are there people who think that this is ok?

Peace be with you .

Thank you; photography brings a lot of that. I was so lucky to have it (photography), in one way or another, all of my life. ;-)

If you don't have a high opinion of crypto or if you just like Patrick Boyle's take on the world, you'll enjoy this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhsrkvEY55s.

For something even more light-hearted, this film maker imagines how bots are created https://vimeo.com/1139845543?fl=wc.

Does anyone know why Trump is starting a war with Venezuela?

They sank Venezuela's little boats but they just wouldn't listen, so Trump took a big boat. What do you do with a seized oil tanker? Venezuelan oil, now we're getting to the nub of it.

None of this should be particularly new to Latin America. The US has been screwing around with South American countries for more than a century. Normally, the CIA would arrange a military coup and install some local puppet general to torture and disappear university students. It has always worked before.

I saw that Elon wants the EU disbanded. He should just stop selling them cars, that'll show 'em. When's he going to Mars again?

There may be new VISA requirements to visit the US. People hoping to visit will have to surrender 5 years' worth of social media posts to obtain a VISA. That might screw with the World Cup schedule. I may be missing the point, these things are choke points for bribery, so maybe that's what's going on. This is how the top dictator distributes the spoils of the state to his lieutenants.

Yes, the corruption smells to high heaven.

On a positive note, Australia seems successfully to have banned under-sixteens from social media, but it appears they are now switching their attentions to WhatsApp instead...

If this move works, we could notice an improvement in Australian literacy within five years.

Now if we could only extend the ban to politicians.

They will never vote for it.

Isn't it interesting that in all the talk about the scourge of illegal drugs and cartels, etc., I am unaware of any politician demanding that the dark money transactions in the crypto world be made public by force of law. I mean, it's not as if the US is shy making about money laws, they force citizens living abroad to file US tax returns. Traditional banks are regulated and they have to report cash transactions above some threshold, a very quaint idea btw, but it does give the illusion of action. But tracking international money trails, now just hold on a minute, that might uncover things that lots of people don't want seen.

Sinking the odd boat full of foreigners or busting the occasional drug gang activity makes for good TV but there can't be anyone left who thinks those actions aren't just theatre, no matter how earnest some of the participants are.

Patrick Boyle provides a report card on DOGE, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QibWyMXvwvM. I don't think it will come as a surprise to most people that they didn't much of anything useful but it's still instructive to see how bad they were. The video is about 35 min long.

What a guy!

Quote
President Donald Trump slammed Rob Reiner on Monday morning, a day after the famed Hollywood director and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found brutally slain in their Los Angeles home.
Trump suggested that the couple was killed because of “the anger” Rob Reiner caused in other people due to his opposition to the president.

Right, but if you quote Charlie Kirk accurately then you're practically a terrorist.

Trump’s ugly Rob Reiner post undercuts the GOP’s post-Charlie Kirk claims to civility
Trump administration officials and the MAGA movement had spent months crying foul about the mostly random people who they said celebrated and politicized Charlie Kirk’s September assassination, with some Republican elected officials even calling for those people to lose their jobs. Trump and some of his allies also used it as the basis of their dubious claims that the political left is more violent than the political right, and even to legitimize a government crackdown on leftist organizations.
But on Monday, the roles were suddenly reversed. And it was more than a random person dancing on the grave of a political foe; it was Trump himself.
It’s also very difficult to square with how the GOP talked about social media posts in the wake of Kirk’s death, emphasizing the importance of civility.

It looks as if Ukraine is about to have to sign away large chunks of its territory to Russia in exchange for a Trumpian guarantee that if it does, though Ukraine will not be allowed to join NATO, the US will give it a guarantee to the same value. Such an offer fills one with confidence, dunnit?

and Putin will chew away another hundred miles or so in the next round after "peace". He knows the US security guarantee is useless. So do the Europeans.
He certainly won't make the same mistakes next time. Reminds me a bit of the run up to WWII, one appeasement at a time. Only this time it is the US doing it.

It must be that Trump is cashing in on this in some manner. He has no interest in world affairs. As someone else on this thread pointed out recently, it's astonishing that he still has support from anyone. It's not as if the USA is benefitting from any of this. It's a sobering thing to see how easy it is to destroy a culture.
