Which flies directly into the face of my own accountant’s advice.

I know Scotland and England have different legal systems, but afaik, taxation was common. I’m not sure, all these decades later, whether the construction of the added on studio formed part of that conversation.

Also, running costs for the cars was a bit confusing: one could put a certain amount towards actual use for work, but not, I think, for the travelling from home to distant studio. That’s why accountants prosper.

Rob

Might it be that if you operated a home studio that generated some in/out client traffic that this would affect things? That might be a different situation than someone who just has an office and a computer. I'm just thinking out "loud" here.

That explanation does ring a bell, somewhere deep in my memory.

Ah Keith, all my own bells are like those sad, empty Spanish Civil War ones in now deserted villages: nice shapes, but the essential inner, dangly, bangy bits long gone. ;-(

Oh man, I'll try to be careful what metaphors I use in future. At least you've acquired wisdom, not sure I have.

Things are hotting up in the internecine MAGA struggles and the Epstein saga is becoming more ludicrous by the minute. So by way of distraction, Trump has revived the Greenland annexation for security reasons. This is pure horseshit, they already were a security ally of the US. There was no problem there that needed to be fixed. Everyone knows this.

As for the Epstein files release, I saw a funny post on Facebook. I'll paraphrase, 'Why do they have to redact a Democratic hoax?'  Why indeed. They're saying now that they had to redact to protect the innocent. Except for the Clinton photos, no need to protect him, I guess. As transparent as glass.

The government of the US is acting like a criminal enterprise running extortion rackets. Trump wants to annex Greenland so he can install himself as the rent-seaking middleman in various mining operations. He doesn’t even have to annex it, just install himself as middleman by treaty, which may be his real purpose. It's not like the US has ever done a good job running other countries. If he gains commercial control of the place then mining companies have to bribe HIM to get the development rights. He has been doing this since taking office in other sectors, granting tariff breaks in exchange for favours to him and his family. Government by favour is pretty much the definition of a shit hole undemocratic country.

There seem to be a lot of Trump supporters who don't seem to understand the concepts of free market and rule of law. It's all just Corporatism now so it's no surprise that the top Corporatists are in arse-lick mode. The only people who believe in the free market are economists who write textbooks. Businessmen hate free market competition, it prevents them from raising prices and increase profits. Businessmen desire monopoly more than anything, and they have engaged in years' long struggles to cripple anti-trust. And it worked because politicians and Supreme Court Justices can be bought for a song.

It is amazing what a wholly manufactured fear of trans kids and university protests can lead to. I was at university in the 1970s and students engaged in lame protest then too, which led to largely nothing. There's nothing easier than frothing up student protest. You don't even to false flag it, impetuous youth does the work for you.

Putin is taking advantage of the void by launching new attacks on Ukraine. In hindsight, it was a bad decision for Ukraine and Canada to give up their nuclear weapons. But who could have foreseen the US turning into a criminal enemy.

There's open talk of the USA running Maduro out of Venezuela. The laughable argument is that he's a bad guy and needs to be removed. You could say the same for a lot of places, including many places in the past where the asshole in charge was installed by the US. But no one remembers anything.

The minions of Trumpistan are lined up at the door waiting for Trump to bow out and seem to be eating each other in the process. No one should be surprised. Is there any one of them who you would trust to lead you into battle?

Switzerland gave Trump a gold bar and he reduced their tariffs. FIFA gave him some trophy or other. Does anyone else get the impression that the rest of the world is just humouring a madman hoping he'll exit soon. MTG confessed that Republican members of Congress make fun of him when he's out of earshot. That has the ring of truth, which is odd coming from her, but that's more a condemnation of those politicians than anything else.

And in the middle of it all, the USA is retrenching on vaccines and medical research. Demographers are already predicting increases in US mortality in the coming years. Self-destruction just like when the Soviet Union imploded.

On a more optimistic note, let me recommend Michael Lewis's latest book, "Who is Government?". It's a good read. In it he makes the radical suggestion that government is not at all bad. I know Americans don't like to hear that, but risk it guys, read the book, it won't hurt you one bit. :)

Every day there are more fantasies from Trump's fevered brain. He is now positing that the US should acquire Greenland for security reasons. How did they ever get through WW2 and the cold war without it?

I like his Trump-class battleship idea though. I figure this one was put out there to attract the attention of TV comedians, that way they can pay their writers to come up with "battleship" jokes thus diverting them from everything else for a day or two. I don't really know anything about naval military tactics but I thought that big battleships were not very effective anymore, if they ever were. Maybe he likes the idea of really big cannons. They always look cool in those old pirate movies.

The advantage of a system of government based on different branches composed of many different people is that you don't become dependent on one mad clown, you know, like King George III. Surely even the most stupid can understand this simple idea. The old dog has had his day, it's just embarrassing now.

The US used to have a lot of allies who had good reasons to pursue mutually beneficial goals. For some reason, some Americans think it's a good idea to piss them all off. And the bad taste in everyone's mouth won't go away when Trump does, because the brutal fact is that half the American population voted for his ideas, and other countries cannot ignore that, and should not. The past 10 years have also shown that the politicians and officials running the USA are mostly just insipid gutless morons. If this governance class had been in charge in Ukraine, the war would have ended in 2-3 weeks like Putin predicted.

Isn't it odd that after decades of worrying about government debt, the huge US debt is hardly ever mentioned anymore. It's even mentioned that the vast wealth about to be uncovered by AI will render the debt pointless. We'll see. I saw a quote by Elon Musk that in the future poverty will be eliminated and so it is dumb for people to save their money. Easy for him to say.

TDS indeed!

President Donald Trump injected some politics into this year’s Christmas Eve phone calls with children from across the country, touching on topics like energy production and the 2020 election.
Fielding calls as part of the U.S. military’s annual NORAD Tracks Santa event, Trump asked one caller what she wanted for Christmas.

“Not coal,” said the caller, an 8-year-old girl.
Trump jokingly corrected her by saying, “You mean clean, beautiful coal.” "No, coal is clean and beautiful. Please remember that at all costs. But you don’t want clean, beautiful coal, right? What would you like?"

What a moron.

And in a twist on the old adage of Santa watching kids to see whether they’re naughty or nice, Trump told a caller from Oklahoma that the U.S. government is keeping an eye on Santa. NORAD — the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a joint U.S.-Canadian operation — has tracked Santa Claus every year since the 1950s.

“We track Santa all over the world. We want to make sure that Santa is being good,” Trump said. “We want to make sure he’s not infiltrated, that we’re not infiltrating into our country a bad Santa.” “Santa loves Oklahoma like I do,” he added. “You know, Oklahoma was very good to me in the election. So I love Oklahoma. Don’t ever leave Oklahoma, OK?”

What a moron.

“I know Pennsylvania is great. We won Pennsylvania, actually, three times,” Trump said, later adding, “I bet your mom voted properly.”

Trump put the focus back on politics in a holiday message he delivered on Truth Social.

"Merry Christmas to all, including the Radical Left Scum that is doing everything possible to destroy our Country, but are failing badly," he wrote before he highlighted a list of accomplishments in his first term, some exaggerated. "We are respected again, perhaps like never before. God Bless America!!!"

TDS; Trump is deranged!

On a positive note: https://www.investing.com/news/economic-indicators/us-economy-outperforms-expectations-with-43-gdp-growth-93CH-4421191

"In conclusion, the latest GDP figure paints a promising picture of the US economy. The growth rate of 4.3% not only beats the forecasted rate but also surpasses the previous figure, indicating a steadily expanding economy. This robust performance is a positive sign for the country’s financial health and bodes well for future economic prospects."

Is Trump mentally OK? A look back at the president’s unusual behavior in 2025
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/24/trump-mental-health-speech-address-2025-review
Quote
There was the case in mid-July, when Trump told a detailed story about how his uncle, the late professor John Trump, had taught Ted Kaczynski, better known as the Unabomber, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Trump recalled: “I said: ‘What kind of a student was he, Uncle John? Dr John Trump.’ I said: ‘What kind of a student?’ And then he said: ‘Seriously, good.’ He said: ‘He’d correct – he’d go around correcting everybody.’ But it didn’t work out too well for him.”

The problem is: that cannot possibly be true. First, Trump’s uncle died in 1985, and Kaczynski was only publicly identified as the Unabomber in 1996. Second, Kaczynski did not study at MIT.

Later that month, during a meeting with the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, Trump abruptly switched from discussing immigration to ranting about “windmills”. Speaking, non-stop and unprompted, for two minutes, Trump claimed without evidence that they drive whales “loco” and that wind energy “kills the birds” (the proportion of birds killed by turbines is tiny compared with the number killed by domestic cats and from them flying into power lines).

Unfortunately, I can’t access the article without going through the “gatekeepers” and giving them the okay to say hello to my computer. I’m not going to do that.

Here, in Spain, they currently have a socialist government that’s up to its armpits in scandal; however, their economy seems to be outperforming the rest of the countries within the European Union whilst Britain, post-Brexit, must be doing down the tubes. I write this, because the currency exchange value of my British state pension is getting frighteningly lower by the month, the value of the pound becoming a bottom feeder in a murky lake. And yeah, it’s a socialist government there, in Britain, too.

After all these years I have grown accustomed to understanding that no shade of government has any long-term answers: the whole damned lot of them just plays the game of sucking the life out of the system for as long as it can get away with it. Red ties today, blue ones tomorrow and lots of smaller fish making deals to keep their favourite sharks at the top of the food chain.

Charisma seems to be the route to the top. Britain’s Boris got into power because he was comfortable playing the buffoon, lying and not turning a hair when confronted with it. Eventually, he was forced out when the embarrassment became too great for the party to bear. Trump has the same noisy appeal to the masses, the same ability to say one thing right now and the opposite five minutes later, and still get away with it. However, even that must pass away. It simply always does.

The fine print there: This article was generated with the support of AI
But there is this elsewere:
Quote
"This has been another year of resilience for the economy," Oxford Economics chief U.S. economist Michael Pearce told CBS News. "The economy has grown at a pretty steady pace."
Yet Pearce hastens to add that the economy, although it has navigated some tricky waters, is "not spectacular" as the year comes to a close, assigning it a grade of a B or B-. Other experts who spoke with CBS News also graded the economy in the B range.
Quote
That may strike many consumers as generous. Three-quarters of Americans surveyed by CBS News earlier this month said they would give the U.S. economy a C, D or F, while just 25% assigned it an A or a B. Recent consumer confidence surveys also indicate that many Americans are downbeat about the economy, mainly due to stubbornly high prices**.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/economists-grade-us-economy-2025/
** Like the war in Ukraine, Trump fixed that on day one... Oh wait.  ;)

A lump of coal is fossilized plant material millions of years old. If it's washed, it's perfectly clean to handle. However, when it's burned as a fuel, a lot of toxic chemicals can be released and this used to be a serious problem until modern technological development addressed the problem.

The latest coal power plants are called "Ultra Supercritical", or "Advanced Ultra Supercritical". They are more efficient than traditional coal plants and virtually eliminate all toxic emissions. They can therefore be considered as 'clean'.

Of course they don't eliminate all CO2 emissions, but CO2 is not only clean, it's essential for all life. Only a moron would call CO2 a pollutant.  :D

For those interested, here is an AI overview of the latest Chinese 'Ultra Supercritical' coal plant.

"The Pingshan Phase II power plant in China's Anhui Province is a landmark 1,350MW ultra-supercritical coal-fired unit, notable as one of the world's most efficient, using advanced dual-shaft turbine technology to achieve high net efficiency (around 49.37%), lower emissions, and better coal use, with its advanced features and efficiency setting new benchmarks for modern coal power even as China continues building plants for grid stability through 2027."

We've covered this before. No one credible calls CO2 a pollutant but please don't bother finding a reference to someone who did. I don't care, people say dumb things all the time, so what. All that climate scientists say is that a man-made rapid onset imbalance of CO2 is not good. And just pre-empt you, CO2 is not a fertilizer either.

The statement that CO2 is essential for life is meaningless. We naturally have arsenic and mercury in our bodies too, but don't add them to your salad.

As for clean coal burning, I sincerely hope that's true, I don't know enough about it to venture an opinion. All I do know is that black lung disease has had a resurgence in the eastern US because they got rid of some pesky "regulations" that were preventing coal companies from making "adequate" profits. It has always been cheaper to kill the peasants, nothing new about that.  :)

As for Trump's involvement in reviving te coal industry. That was one of tbe promises of his first term. That failure has been documented.

I sincerely hope that's true. It's odd though that the administration continues to point out that all the problems in the US economy are Biden's fault but when some positive data comes out, well, that's down to Trump. It must be difficult to explain why an economy that is doing well needs a $12 billion handout to the agricultural sector. I'm sure there's an explanation, there always is.

When I heard about the numbers, my first thought was that somebody was trying to save their job. When that Biden-appointee labour stats guy posted bad numbers, Trump fired him. You'll have to forgive me if I now am suspicious of numbers that come out of US agencies now that they have been politicized.

I have to say that I admire your steadfastness given the shit show news that emerges every day. Must be difficult to remain loyal to an old coot spouting gibberish on social media till all hours every time someone has the temerity to contradict him. That's not how credible adults should behave. Last time I paid attention he was still saying that other countries are paying the tariffs and his minions are still clinging to that on the talk shows. I mean, come on.

Anyway, it will be 2026 soon and we still haven't figured out who ate all that dogs in that town. When are they going to release the "dog eating" files, that's what I want to know.

Just examine LCOE of Coal vs. a true clean renewable like wind or solar. Game over, “clean coal”!

It amazes me that some people still believe these LCOE claims when it's so obvious that countries, and states in the US, that have prioritized the development of wind and solar energy, have the highest prices of energy, resulting in the departure of many manufacturing industries to other countries where energy prices are much cheaper as a result of the continued development and use of fossil fuels.

I asked the following question on the internet: "Why are energy prices so high when the LCOE claims renewables are cheaper than fossil fuel energy?"

The AI review gave the following answer:

"Energy prices stay high despite cheap renewable Levelized Costs of Energy (LCOE) because LCOE often ignores crucial factors like grid connection, storage, and backup needed for unreliable solar/wind (intermittency)."

Do tell us about a lower-cost, renewable, clean-energy product that can go from first shovel to final running in about 18 months.
In my state, the LAW mandates that ALL energy must be renewable by 2045. We're over 80% there today.

The AI review gave the following answer:
You're wasting a lot of energy on AI sir. Again, in my state, the PRC sets energy fees based on the cost of producing it. Lower cost to produce, lower cost to us. Facts again, not AI energy sucking: LCOE of Solar and Wind PLUS battery power IS part of the LCOE calculation! Again, Coal is a big loser.
