I think it's got to a level of cynicism where nobody is surprised by anything anymore.

Metaphorically speaking, and as Marcellus remarked: methinks there is something rotten in the state of Denmark.

They're openly talking about suspending habeas corpus on the basis that illegal immigration is an invasion. Presumably that means they could then classify people as combatants the way the US did in the heyday of black sites and Guantanamo. Why do you need to suspend habeas corpus to police illegal immigration? For a place that fetishizes individual freedom, I didn't detect much pushback. Maybe everyone is shell-shocked by now, maybe 'flooding the zone' is working. What will they end up with when they're done.

Trump shaking hands with the new Syrian president, Ahmed al-Sharaa.
He wants him to normalize relations with Israel....
I would not be surprised if Trump wants to make a deal with Syria to take up many citizen from Gaza.
israel, in their expansion drift, seeks "friendly countries" to deport them out of their native land. It is the last problem to put an end to Palestina.
Lifting sanctions on Syria seems like a good thing to give them a chance to develop themselves and show they can be that peaceful state once again, but now hopefully more free without Assad.

I want Qatar to buy me a new DSLR!

The plane gift from Qatar is weird in several ways. Things like this don't happen without Trump administration involvement/cooperation. It's odd on the face of it that the POTUS needs another country to give him a plane that was built in the US in the first place. That would normally be embarrassing, wouldn't it?

It's also weird because if Qatar wanted to bribe the POTUS, there are probably many ways to accomplish this that aren't so public, e.g., buying Trump 'meme coins', a bag of cash, desert real estate.

Is the plane really his or does it belong to the country? When he's no longer Pres, does he get to keep it? If so, who pays for its refurbishment while he is President? Why should the taxpayer pay to refurbish a plane that he gets to keep when he's gone. Makes no sense.

So why is this all happening in public view? What else is going on that everyone is distracted from?

What's going on, Robert, is that the smoke and mirrors have become all that there is. Remove them, and not only the USA, but probably all countries would disintegrate into regional warring clans. That’s what we used to be, and only the emergence of bigger, stronger clans managed to beat the others into submission. It’s our continuing, circular history as homo (not so) sapiens. Illusion and a wide (thankfully!) ignorance and unwillingness for deep thinking are what keep us relatively pacified - for the moment; just imagine if the day were to come when the cows in the meadows and the pet dogs lying by the fire were to realise just how easily they could kill us all. Ignorance truly can be bliss.

Here's a Charlie Sykes interview with David Frum covering the range of Trump family grifts, incl details about that Qatari jet, crypto and the future of the US courts, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-XKx6d-UR4. It's not cheerful listening. At one point near the end, Frum says that he remains optimistic but I don't see why. It was recorded after the mid-east trip.

Frum characterizes Trump's behaviour as retirement planning, it's all about his own enrichment and the future of the country never enters his mind. Obvious by now, I'd say, but always worth re-stating. From that point of view, almost everything he does politically can be seen as distraction.

Frum's description of DOGE is especially caustic. Musk hung around long enough to get rid of government departments that were investigating Musk's enterprises and then disappeared, without really saving the country much money.

Frum also mentions in passing the anonymous sending of pizzas to members of the judiciary or their families. Is this the US government or an episode of the Sopranos?

Trump is now even going after functionaries at the Library of Congress and the Copyright office. He fired the acting head of FEMA after a hearing at which the official dared give his real opinion.

The new US ambassador to Canada made a whining statement about Canadians no longer buying stuff from the US. That's no way to treat a friend, he says. How much does this guy get paid? Maybe DOGE should shut down some embassies.

It's all farce.

It is emerging as a pattern. Televised pseudo-meetings turned into grill sessions with foreign leaders on live broadcast from the oval office. What I don't understand is why those leaders play the game, they should just refuse to participate.

They look more and more like Trumpistan's version of the Tonight show, with JD and Rubio on the couch to laugh and applaud when the sign goes up, a bit like Ed McMahon. All that's missing is theme music, a monologue, and some sponsors. I predict we get some pet tricks soon. Trump thinks he's the star, maybe he thinks his demented rants are entertaining. The most recent show with the South African leader even had some footage from a funereal in the Congo. To these fools I guess all those African countries seem the same. But that's also part of the game. They show incorrect footage, don't acknowledge the error and move on, knowing that their audience doesn't care, it's just TV. So maybe that's as seriously as we should take it. OTOH, continually showing falsehoods has an effect of a kind, the fact that they are not stopped is in itself a lesson. What was the lyric from the Beatles' tune "Nothing is real..."

In a speech, the Press Sec lady Leavitt described Canada as a small garage with a flag. This is not verbatim, I am repeating what was described to me, I am unable to sit and listen to these nitwits. It's all a bit like listening to 12 year olds debate world affairs. They keep doing it so there must be an audience for it. Do they need the ratings?

Hegseth has announced that the Air Force is accepting the Qatari jet. Nobody should surprised, no bar is too low. The mob is in charge of the USA now.

What’s with the battle against Harvard? Did they refuse him an honorary doctorate, or something similar? Could it just be a battle against better education? I can understand the risk inherent in an educated electorate…

Perhaps when the Supreme Court is 100% stacked with toadies, all, or at least most of this nonsense, will end: no need for distractions when the trick is completed and the game won. Total impunity may finally bring total serenity. Christmas could come early this year.

On the news in Spain tonight, they report that Mr Netanyahu has equated the slogan “Free Palestine” with “Heil Hitler”; nothing like confusing totally disparate things in order to arouse some smoke and sympathy in an otherwise impossible situation. Those damned historical chickens and eggs have a lot for which to feel responsible.

From some reporting I saw, the increase in debt that will be created by the recent US tax bill (assuming it passes the Senate) completely wipes out the 'savings' estimates brought about by DOGE actions.  And that's even if you assume those savings estimates are real.

This was the funniest headline I've seen in a bit https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5315120-trump-diplomacy-successes-and-failures/. They are ranking the foreign leader visits, so it's a ratings war after all. Reality TV diplomacy!

I have not read the details, but it seems like more culture war distraction to me. Since when does Trump care about higher education. The big name universities in the US have private endowments that could probably buy many smaller countries so maybe Trump resents not getting a cut. It's not like he can tariff them, so they have no reason to buy his crypto. Am I too cynical?

He appears to be accusing them of antisemitism, and the suggestion I heard in Spain is that he is denying them the right to award degrees to foreign students, presumably in an attempt to drive away foreign earnings from Harvard. How perverted can one administration become? I ask, but suspect that we ain’t seen nuttin’ yet.

Try this for an antidote against the biased media: "The Department of Homeland Security announced the action Thursday, saying Harvard has created an unsafe campus environment by allowing “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” to assault Jewish students on campus. It also accused Harvard of coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party, saying it hosted and trained members of a Chinese paramilitary group as recently as 2024."

Not sure I'd take anything from Homeland Security at face value, but hey, that's just me.

We'll obviously never see eye to eye on these matters but I'm curious to get your opinion about something I heard. Someone told me a few days ago that members of the DOGE team were seen to be eating people's pet dogs. Do you think there's any truth to that? I'm just asking the question.

That's interesting, Frans. Any reason why I would feel safer listening to the pronouncements (claimed) for the DHS than I would to the messages flowing from the pretty lips of the bland, suicide blonde acting as official mouthpiece for Mr T?

It would be informative to know exactly what “hosting and trained members of a Chinese paramilitary group” actually comes down to in real terms. In some senses, the Mr T hand-holding with Mr Putin appears perhaps more alarming…

What were “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” composed of? How did they get there, declare themselves, or otherwise earn the applied title? Un-American… how long is your memory? That convenient, catch-all branding drove quite a few creatives, Jewish ones too, out of work and sometimes right out of the US just a few decades ago. Be careful how definitions get tossed around. Such vague, handy phraseology knows no definitive friends or enemies, rather does it usually stink of situation ethics.

Yes, that sounds so unbiased. Was assault not illegal there already?

Read in a local newspaper here in Mallorca that Elon is a bit miffed with Señor Trump because his current business strategy looks like it’s about to sabotage Elon’s own strategic master plan on getting the US economy right… left hand, right hand, ship of fools?

I’m sure Frans will make like Jim Dandy, and quickly come to the rescue here, explaining why the news item got it so wrong.

Good thing they're such business geniuses or the US economy would be hurting. Well, at least Trump's crypto interests are healthy I think, that's the important thing.

Now they want to revoke Chinese students' visas, about a quarter million of them I believe. Rubio doesn't want them learning the wrong things. I wonder if the US universities can afford the tuition hit.

There seems to be a lot of grumbling here and there that maybe DOGE didn't save the country as much money as expected. Change is hard.
