That’s a lovely story, Chris!

As for flyover country: how did you find it stacking up with the coastal preconceptions once you got there? Is there also a sort of reverse version of the same thing?

New Jersey, to me, means Tony Soprano… ironic he should have really died in Rome - the Italian one. ;-)

Also somewhat ironic: in Britain, the Beeb is, nowadays, constantly under a kind of low-level threat of closure by right-wing governments. I suppose they see votes in that policy because so many people hate paying a licence fee for it, whether they watch it or not. To an extent, if you don’t watch you shouldn’t have to pay, but on the other hand, who else would produce such amazing natural history programmes as I remember coming out of the Bristol studios? I’m sure they also earn a pretty penny from foreign sales of their bodice-ripper romances that run and run and run. I guess that if it was simply paid for under general, unclassified taxation, nobody would care. It’s the same with road tax, where the tax money raised doesn’t all get spent on roads. Have one large, indistinct fund and these taxpayer gripes wouldn’t arise. But then, where would all the fun go?

I find it interesting that the only public affairs channels I can stomach are at least partly funded by taxpayer, CBC, TVO, PBS, BBC.

My sense of it is that the preconceptions developed later.  During my relatively brief period as a news reporter, the times were already a-changing, thanks to Vietnam, and the civil rights and feminist movements, but the divide between MAGA and Woke hadn't developed yet.  Or if it had, I didn't detect it.  Centrifugal political forces tended to drag politicians toward the center in those days: the conventional wisdom was that conservative candidates for office would edge away from the right wing of their party in their campaigns for election and that liberal candidates would distance themselves from the left.  The two extremes have always been far apart, but these days the forces are centripetal—thanks in no small part to the influence of online social media—and the extremes tend to pull their respective political bases closer to them.  These days, the resentment on the right is delicately balanced by the sanctimoniousness on the left.  Sometimes one side prevails, sometimes the other.  Lately, the right has had an edge; "flyover country" put Trump in office (twice).

New Jersey, to me, means Tony Soprano…

The little suburb where I grew up wasn't geographically that far from Tony's stomping grounds, but it was more Mad Men than The Sopranos.  It was a ten-minute drive to the George Washington Bridge that crossed the Hudson River into upper Manhattan and while the village had been populated by Europeans since the earliest Dutch settlers arrived in North America, after the bridge made it possible to drive across the river into the city, it became a popular commuter town for corporate executives, entertainment personalities, and especially members of the faculty of Columbia University.  (The story was that during the Second World War, Enrico Fermi persuaded a number of other Columbia scientists to relocate there from New York because he and his wife wanted to be able to host social events without being concerned about inadvertently spilling atomic secrets.)  We had a good mix of professional and working class residents, but no Tonys ... well, there were occasional whispered rumors about the "connection" of the accountant who owned the house up the street from ours.

RFK Jr removed an entire CDC vaccine panel, https://www.cnbc.com/2025/06/09/rfk-jr-cdc-panel-vaccines.html. I don't think he's going far enough. Since he doesn't believe in Pasteur's 'germ theory' of disease, he should move to ban latex surgical gloves. Or at least impose one hell of a tariff on them, (I'm I assuming they're made offshore). I'm surprised that antibiotics are still legal, since there's no reason to kill germs.

Trump gave himself a pat on the back claiming that L.A. would have burned to the ground if he hadn't acted by sending the National Guard (or was it the Marines). Personally, I think he is disappointed that widespread violence didn't break out. The Jan 6th echoes are too ironic. If he wants to cancel the midterms, he'd better find a reason to invoke martial law soon. Sending a few Marines to L.A. for no obvious reason isn't convincing anyone.

I think that Musk's black eye is healing well. I saw that Trump is still hinting at cancelling Musk companies government contracts. Are the contracts good for the country or aren't they? Doesn't this matter?

John Oliver made some cogent statements regarding freedom of speech and freedom of the press a few weeks ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07JQr5W3970. He talked about some well-known high profile cases but also point out a lesser known local case that I wasn't aware of that is a pretty good indication that the US is well on the way down the road to authoritarianism. Attacking/muzzling the press is a major step along that road.

I'm not optimistic. I think that Trump is trying awfully hard to make the US a failed state before the mid terms. He and his minions do not want or like democracy. A couple of them actually claim to find philosophical reasons to support that view, a sure sign they need to read more. I can only surmise that a large number of Americans don't have a problem with this, which is not a good sign.

The incident with security people knocking the California Senator to the ground and handcuffing him was very illustrative. My first question was, 'Where were his own armed bodyguards?' But later I heard the remarks that Homeland Security chief Noem made prior to that, claiming that a military takeover of California (and L.A.) was made necessary by the failure of those administrations in restraining violent insurrection. This was patently untrue, utterly fake news. The incidents of violence were inconsequential and of very much lower level than the Jan 6th riots by way of comparison. If that is a little too much like 'what aboutism', deal with it. The feds tried to declare war on California.

It will be interesing to see which ass-lickers show up to that sick-as-sh*t military parade tomorrow.

Don’t worry about it, Robert, it’s become academic: Isreal bombed Iran’s nuclear stations. The US claims no hand in it, but even if that were true, nobody seeking the inevitable vengeance will believe it anymore.

The area of the fan is about to become messy.

I can believe that Israel kept the US in the dark about the attacks. If they did, Hedgpeth and pals would have blabbed the details on X and Facebook.

Why would anyone share any information with the Trumpistan gang of fools? They are consistently incompetent. I wonder if they still think they run the world.

If anyone wants a respite from this nonsense, I recommend Carl Hiassen's latest Florida novel, Fever Beach. To give you a small taste, one of the main characters is a wannabe white nationalist who was kicked out of the Proud Boys because of excessive sexual self-abuse, something they apparently frown on. And because he mistakenly spread some dog feces on the statue of a Confederate general's at the Jan 6th riots instead of on the statue of Ulysses S Grant because he got the two confused, the Oath Keepers rejected his application to join them. That's just the start, it gets wild after that.

To be fair, he did say "I can believe ...",  he did not claim any special knowledge so I don't know what your complaint is.

I'm more interested this morning in why Noem feels the need to dress up in costume and attend Homeland Security raids in person, https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/immigration/border-coverage/ice-raid-pregnant-mom-kristi-noem/. For whom does she put on this show? Are there no adults in the room, ever?

As always though, I'm still worried about who is eating the dogs. Is anyone not looking into this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHycpIhnFcU. For the first time I let that clip play a bit longer than I normally do and Trump also mentions cats. I'd missed that. I'm shocked, I tell you, I'm shocked and appalled to find this out.

A friend sent me this clip of Democratic Co-Chair on the Armed Services Committee Rep. Adam Smith making adult-level commentary on military policy issues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ-T1yMKylo. It's just nice to hear some for a change.

Knowing, not knowing, it's the same old story: Trump lying again.

Quote
Israeli officials say that their country’s deadly military strike on Iran was rubber-stamped by Donald Trump, despite his claims to have had nothing to do with it.

Just hours before Israel’s massive operation Thursday targeting Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear facilities, military officials, and nuclear scientists, Trump claimed he was against an attack because it would “blow” ongoing diplomatic talks, which were set to continue this weekend.

Two Israeli officials told Axios, however, that Trump was lying and the president had only pretended to publicly oppose Israel’s military operation to “eliminate” ballistic missile and nuclear facilities, which was reportedly eight months in the making.

I was intrigued by this Florida sheriff's public threats https://people.com/florida-sheriff-threatens-kill-potential-protestors-graveyard-dead-11754515. Is it ok for police to threaten to kill people in the USA? Shouldn't Homeland Security arrest this guy?

Well, if you want to keep law and order respected, you have to enforce it. The only way that works in the heads of moronic looters and trouble-makers ever present at demonstrations is to let them know in advance that there will be consequences.

There is no doubt that pretty much all demonstrations, everywhere, fall prey to those who take advantage of the confusion to rob and be violent. The US has no monopoly there: France sees similar, Britain has it, Germany and Italy have it - it’s an established game. Time to end it.

Of course, the above does not defend or excuse the elected leaders who, in my opinion, are currently amongst the worst we have ever seen. In effect, they are the elected version of the same people they have in their sights, the difference being that they have managed to win votes from people who, I think, have largely given up hope or expectation of honesty in public office.

The population is, and always has been manipulated by politicians and power groups; once it was through the press and radio/television, but now the Internet has leapt in and turned the entire communications asylum over to the crazies.

I can’t predict how or where it will end, but think there will be much pain - and quite possibly total dystopia with no way back.

Trumps behavior as a president trickles down to every level in society, i am afraid.
