There are at least 74 million Americans whose bullshit detector is broken beyond all repair.

And they're all at each others' throats.

Poll: Over 50 percent of Americans expect a civil war 'in the next few years'

https://www.yahoo.com/news/poll-over-50-percent-americans-194757941.html

Never have I been so glad to be Canadian. We should be the ones building a wall.  And we should pay for it ourselves.

Never have I been so glad to have travelled the USA from end to end because no way would I do it now.

It's a mystery to me why everyone is so pissed off at each other.

Maybr this should be in the A Touch of Humor thread, but it is political and funny (sort of)
Herschel Walker, the GOP candidate for Georgia senator, has said:

  • (what to do about school shootings): "[we need] "a department that can look at young men that's looking at women that's looking at social media"
  • (about air pollution): "Since we don't control the air, our good air decided to float over to China's bad air, so when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. "So it moves over to our good air space. Then, now, we got we to clean that back up."
  • (about the United States): there are "52 states."

This is Trump's handpicked choice for the senate race. Maybe Trump was thrilled to find someone dumber than he is.

An interview on NPR's Fresh Air unpacking recent Supreme Court decisions https://www.npr.org/2022/07/01/1109384857/unpacking-the-supreme-courts-recent-decisions.

Intro blurb from the landing page: "The court's super majority of conservative judges has already passed down rulings about abortion and the 2nd Amendment. New York Times journalist Adam Liptak says more legal upheavals are likely. "[It's] a court that seems to be in an exceptional hurry," he says."

As one example, given the widespread support for abortion according to all the polls since forever, what was the urgency in reversing Roe in a case that did not even call for that judgment? Why the rush to appease the American Taliban?

It also goes into a discussion about Justice Thomas re his wife's whackadoodle conspiracy beliefs.

The discussion re election suppression was worrying.

So if Walker wins, our local Senile expert that failed at photography* might have a future with Trumps support. 🤔

I begin to think that the main thing all the anti-abortion people have in common is that they have never had enjoyable sex and are mentally all screwed up about it.

Much was made during the Trump administration that the people he appointed to cabinet were not top rank. I remember reading them described as "C listers". I think history has borne that out (Flynn, Navarro, etc.) This article foresees even worse things in a second Trump mandate https://www.thebulwark.com/who-would-staff-a-second-trump-term/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email.

I've been watching some youtube videos about the FOX vs Trump war. The videos seem to paint Murdoch as some kind of king-maker. Is that wise?

It seems that FOX's new boy is De Santis from Florida. I admit to not paying attention to the details, but are there policy differences between De Santis and Trump or is this all purely a media popularity thing?  If that's the case, and it sure looks that way from here, isn't that kind of pathetic. Is POTUS really chosen the way the ratings pick the top TV show.

This episode of the TV series The Prisoner "Free for All" is on point, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtL9cFufaLY.

Alex Jones manages to shield himself from writing out a big cheque, https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/29/media/alex-jones-free-speech-systems-bankruptcy/index.html.

I love this but, "Three smaller companies tied to Jones declared bankruptcy earlier this year, briefly pausing the cases in both Texas and Connecticut. But the families suing Jones dropped the three smaller companies from their lawsuits so that the cases could move forward against Jones and Free Speech Systems. Shortly after, the three companies exited bankruptcy protection."

(Btw, isn't the name of his company Free Speech Systems a perfect Newspeak moment. Man, that Orwell saw it all, didn't he.)

It's an ongoing mystery to me how obvious lightweight con men like Alex Jones and Trump can acquire dedicated followers. Their schtick isn't remotely convincing.

One thing about Jones I'd be curious about. In a recent podcast Sam Harris and his conservative guest David French had a short conversation about safety re the death threats they've both received. In French's case, being a right of centre Christian has not protected him from the ire of Trumpistan when he has criticized the Donald. I'd like to know if Alex Jones has received similar threats, because if anyone deserved them, it's Jones. Can all the nut bars really only be on one side? That doesn't seem statistically plausible.

In my experience it is ALWAYS the right wing who engage in physical threats, for example to school boards, public health officials, town council members, election officials, and so on. "I know where you live" or "I know where your kid goes to school" and similar vile crap. Never those on the left.

With recent threats against some Supreme Court justices about their Roe decision, how could you make that comment?  Where have you been?  There are even Democrat congresswomen encouraging harassment of people whose policies she disagrees with.

I remember a whole decade when the left had been engaged in violence for a long time even fifty years ago including the Black Liberation Army, The Weathermen, etc. who killed cops and bombed places and planned the overthrow of the American government.  You really need to read some history and catch up with the facts.  Watch a different channel besides CNN or MSNBC.

Days of Rage: America's Radical Underground, the FBI, and the Forgotten Age of Revolutionary Violence Paperback – Illustrated, April 5, 2016
From the bestselling author of Public Enemies and The Big Rich, an explosive account of the decade-long battle between the FBI and the homegrown revolutionary movements of the 1970s.
The Weathermen. The Symbionese Liberation Army. The FALN. The Black Liberation Army. The names seem quaint now, when not forgotten altogether. But there was a time in America, during the 1970s, when bombings by domestic underground groups were a daily occurrence. The FBI combated these and other groups as nodes in a single revolutionary underground, dedicated to the violent overthrow of the American government.

In Days of Rage, Bryan Burrough re-creates an atmosphere that seems almost unbelievable just forty years later, conjuring a time of native-born radicals, most of them “nice middle-class kids,” smuggling bombs into skyscrapers and detonating them inside the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol, at a Boston courthouse and a Wall Street restaurant packed with lunchtime diners. The FBI’s fevered response included the formation of a secret task force called Squad 47, dedicated to hunting the groups down and rolling them up. But Squad 47 itself broke many laws in its attempts to bring the revolutionaries to justice, and its efforts ultimately ended in fiasco.

Drawing on revelatory interviews with members of the underground and the FBI who speak about their experiences for the first time, Days of Rage is a mesmerizing book that takes us into the hearts and minds of homegrown terrorists and federal agents alike and weaves their stories into a spellbinding secret history of the 1970s.

By paying attention. Do try that someday; it even works with photography you'll be very surprised to find out if you can do so. The evidence thus far proves otherwise.

Always and never? I would think that as a reasonable person you would know better than to engage in that kind of silliness.

It's bad enough that we're constantly subjected to Alan's ridiculous false equivalence statements. Please don't engage in this kind of verbal nonsense as it only gives him more reason to believe that everyone else is just as blind as himself and therefor he has no reason to moderate his extremely rigid black & white thinking or crazy rhetoric.

OK, I should have said ALMOST always. But I note that you are bringing things up, mostly, from 40-50 years ago. Irrelevant. And the few things that are contemporary involve fringe elements. But the right wing threats often involve ordinary citizens, parents of school children and home owners and suburanites, not the fringe. That's important because it tells us that among the right--that is MAGA--threats and violence are becoming accepted means of achieving your politican ends. As Jan 6 showed us.

There are even Democrat[ic] congresswomen [plural] encouraging harassment of people whose policies she [singular] disagrees with.

Try learning to express yourself using the English language. Reading, while paying attention to how writers use language, is a great way to improve both your reading comprehension as well as writing skills.

You're using Democrat (a noun) when you mean Democratic (an adjective), then you mix together both a plural and singular subject in a way that no one can tell which you intended, and you leave out any specificity which would indicate to whom or what you may be referring. It's just more of the mangled and meaningless hot air we've come to expect from you.

It's another in your long line of vague assertions. That special sensation you get when you feel like a cogent thought is ready to burst forth, it's just gas.

With recent threats against some Supreme Court justices about their Roe decision, how could you make that comment? ...

That's the kind of personal emotional threat I was getting at. Revolutionary movements attack power structures, the odd dead cop or civilian is just collateral damage, not the intended targets. Governments, for example, use that excuse all the time. Presumably this kind of behaviour is the kind of thing you'd otherwise condone though. You're the one who claims that, in part, the 2nd amendment is a way to arm people against tyrannical governments. That's the sticking point though, who gets to decide who is tyrannical and who isn't. The Weathermen thought it was their duty to resist. Did they have a right to bear arms? Of course, they were loonie-tunes but so are lots of militia goons, yet we think it's ok for them to come to demonstrations armed to the teeth. It's their right, we say. Well, ok, but.

The Alex Jones crowd so stalked and threatened a couple of the Sandy Hook parents that they had to move several times. That kind of personal threat, not unlike the kind aimed at the Justices, is in a league all its own. Not sure that falls under the category of revolutionary fervour.

This is not a war you can win by logical reasoning and fair negotiations. European leaders are understanding that now.

Indeed not.

I think Simon Jenkins would prefer to throw the Ukrainians to the dogs than have to take a cold shower because there's no fuel to heat his potable water.  His argument basically is we should continue to do regular business with the Russians and stop any sanctions on them.  Why don't we agree with the Russians already and let them take the Donbas region as they claim is theirs and get onto other more pressing matters like heating our homes?  Who'll want to put up with our wives' complaints this winter?
