In a few more words, what was revealed today was disgusting, disgraceful, and once again frightening for the future of freedom and democracy as the threat is ongoing. The apologists and minimizers are complicit collaborators.
There are certainly forces seeking to actively undermine democracy, not just in the USA. The biggest threat, or should I say weakness is the political bias and lack of independence of the judiciary.
It’s a sad day when even the wife of the Chief Justice actively joins in the effort to overturn the Election and escapes censorship to boot.
England, though never having faced the extremes we’re seeing in America does at least have an independent Supreme Court, elected from within the judiciary, a fixed retirement age and a revolving Presidency - thereby nullifying the arguments over ‘packing’ the SC, confirmation hearings and politically motivated obstructionism. Sadly the antics we’re seeing in the States is being replicated, albeit in a slightly different form in England.
Growing up ‘we’ were led to believe in the advantage of the 2-party democratic, first-past-the-post system primarily, ‘we’ were told, because it allowed for ‘strong’ government. A few decades of experience have made me doubt that. I see the countries who have a system of proportional representation, in one form or another, just as, if not more effective. It also effectively eliminates the possibility of subverting the democratic process.
