Trump will probably laugh at France's diesel subs...

...as any closed-minded self-absorbed narcissistic idiot would. Meanwhile, at the U.S. Naval Institute, they have the mental capacity to discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of any type of weapon, as they must.

The admiral was the idiot.  He selected an obsolete French sub that was a waste of Australian dollars and behind schedule.  The Australian government reversed the Admiral's selection and bought American and UK-designed nuclear.

From someone who never lets complete expertise of a subject get in the way of having strong opinions about it.
Alan, what branch of the military did you serve? As an admiral perhaps?

On the lighter side:

Elon Musk was upset that president Biden said nothing about his company's successful flight into space.

From a Twitter thread:

The President of the United States has refused to even acknowledge the 4 newest American astronauts who helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars for St. Jude.

What’s your theory on why that is?

Most likely, Biden didn't get clearance from UAW to comment on the flight.
If Musk gets upset about the snub, he should dedicate his next space transport to Jimmy Hoffa.

If they could find the body, maybe Musk could send Hoffa into space?

We are buying an all-electric car. From the start of our shopping, Tesla was off the list because we both despise Musk. Ego-boy, we call him. Great cars, we hear, but we have principles.

Musk reminds me of Howard Hughes. Eccentric and a little nuts.

That's a pragmatic choice. The waiting list for Tesla cars is now 6-7 months. For Cybertruck much longer (1.4 million deposits paid). Much easier to get Chevy Bolt.

Or Thomas Edison or Henry Ford.  A 21st Century version of the classic 20th Century disruptive American industrialist.  In the 1960s and 1970s, the creation of innovative technologies was the province of big corporate bureaucracies: Bell Laboratories, Xerox PARC, and the like.  But corporate research spending is now much more narrowly directed toward product development.

Exactly! Maybe that's why GM tells the Bolt owners to park it at least 50 ft from other objects.

https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/gm-tells-some-bolt-owners-park-50-feet-away-other-cars

I have read about the battery issue to which your link refers. The defective batteries are supplied by LG who operates a nonunion battery plant in Michigan. Though, I don't believe that union or nonunion assembly is a key factor in quality control or product quality generally. I'm supportive of union participation for economic as well as other social benefits.

Have you been documenting the quality control issues at Tesla as you have at GM and Ford? I don't just mean things like the roof flying off of a new Y model right after taking delivery. I mean more general quality control issues.

The links which you provided are more than one year old. Yes, it is well known that the earlier Tesla models had in the past several quality issues, especially in the cars made in the original Fremont factory. Those problems were corrected and the new cars are apparently getting better with every new update. The Shanghai factory is newer and their cars contain fewer and more streamlined parts, so not only ther quality is higher but also the cars require less maintenance. Austin and Berlin factories which will come online in the coming weeks will employ even more innovations to improve their product quality.

To compare the internal design of Ford Mach-E and Tesla Y, you can watch Sandy Munro's video:

Right. That's the one which you already posted here...

I'm not a car guy. Like I said before, it's just certain assertions that would attract my attention like GM is "ready to go up belly up again" or Tesla "pay their employees twice as much as the unionized factories" or some antiunion comment. Those are things that would get me probing into the basis for an assertion or comment.

The problem with EVs is that because the batteries are so expensive, they scrimp on high-value features you find in classier gasoline cars at the same price.  When I look at the Tesla 3, it looks cheap like a Toyota Corolla that costs 40% less.  Some of the foreign electrics look a lot classier than Tesla's.  But I suppose the cost is much higher too.

Nothing wrong with unions.  The problem is the higher cost to manufacture in a union shop has forced a lot of factories overseas.  So millions of jobs have been lost. Also, the taxpayers have bailed out GM under Obama and have bailed them and other US auto companies again this time. Auto unions have reaped the benefits.  So the public is subsidizing unions.  That's great for the union workers.  But for people who are not union workers in Detroit, they're paying their taxes on lower wages to support the union workers at higher wages.  Where's the fairness in that?

Maybe Biden can send drones from over the horizon to control the situation.

Border Patrol agents are using reins like whips to round up Haitian immigrants. How is that OK?

I am, and I've also worked adjacent to the industry.  Tesla is known for sub-par quality (not "bad" per se, but not consistent with the price and marketplace position of the car)  and difficult parts availability.  Anecdotally, I have a few friends with Model 3 & Model Y and I love the cars - you just won't convince me that the "non-union" status of Tesla has led to a superior product coming off the assembly line, because it hasn't.

Quality is in the eye of the beholder. Tesla appeals to people who like the minimalistic look, quick acceleration and farting sounds.
Nowadays, I like cars with comfy seats, ease of getting in and out, big trunk and a good overall visibility.
