As the price of oil collapsed as the Arabs flooded the market a couple of years ago, there was a large shutdown of fracking which is more expensive to produce than regular drilling.  That reduced domestic production.  ...

Supply and demand at work then. You should be happy, the free market is functioning as it should. What are you complaining about?

Les, $595 a week is $30940 a year, not $56K, still a substantial amount compared to earning $15 an hour or $30,000 a year.  Why work when you can spend your time on the forums? :)

You are right Alan, $595 per week comes to $39,940. I got the $56K number from Canada Services website, but now I see that they referred to the insurable earnings not the payout.  Either way, that's not too bad.

You're leaving out some bits. First, you can only receive it for a maximum period of one year (last time I looked) and that is pro-rated by how long you had paid premiums into the system while working, so it could be less than a year. And you quoted the maximum payout rate, which not everyone receives as it is determined by how much you paid in. The way you phrased it made it sound like a gift, whereas it's an insurance payout.
In America, the employer pays the insurance premiums.  How much the employer pays depends on their record of laying people off.  The more they do that, the higher their premiums.  Employees pay nothing for unemployment insurance.   If an employee gets fired for "cause", then they might not get unemployment insurance. It has to be a layoff because the company doesn't want you anymore either because they don't need you or because they think you aren't qualified or doing the job right.  However, if you show up drunk all the time, punch the boss in the nose, or worse some customer, and are fired for cause, then the company will object to unemployment payments to keep their premiums down and there could be a hearing to determine who's right.

You can only receive the max for a period of a year if you had been paying premiums into the system for many years while employed at a job. It's not a gift, it's an INSURANCE payout. If you don't pay any premiums, you don't get any benefits.

Not sure what you're getting at. If those are lousy careers and no one is applying for those jobs, then that is that, isn't?

Another fact not to be overlooked is that many unemployed use the current opportunity for a career change. Many of them were not overly satisfied with their previous jobs and covid is the kick in the pants to make the change. According to Pew Research Center, 2/3 of unemployed would consider a change and 1/3 does something about it.

Quote
“two-thirds of unemployed adults said that they’ve seriously considered changing fields or occupations since they’ve been unemployed,” said senior researcher Ruth Igielnik. “Meanwhile, one-third have taken concrete steps to retool their skills by pursuing job retraining programs and educational opportunities.”

As you correctly stated before, it's supply and demand.  Every job will get filled at the right price.

Funny you have to point this out to a Alan who's posted so often about his social security he so needs, after which he makes the same statement. But like accusing Biden of something while ignoring worse from Trump, this kind of hypocrisy is common out of Alan's playbook. Again, he's simply not to be taken seriously. The only one taking him seriously is Alan which he can't recognize.

You don't have a free market when the government is interfering with it shutting oil off in certain sectors.  The oil industry would have otherwise made up the shortfall from fracking with the XL and other domestic drilling.  But Biden shut that down making us more reliant on Russian oil.  How is that smart?

Not only are your attacks on me personal, but your facts are also wrong.  In America, employers pay unemployment insurance unlike in Canada where the employee pays.  Get your facts in order.  You're slipping, Andrew.  :)

But it went from 520,000 to 800,000 under Biden.  So it's increasing under Biden as I said.  Meanwhile Biden shut down various domestic sources.  How does that help?  Maybe next year it will be over a million barrels?  How is that being smart?

Not only are your attacks on me personal, but your facts are also wrong.  In America, employers pay unemployment insurance unlike in Canada where the employee pays.

Quote
WHO PAYS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE?
The regular, pre-pandemic program is funded by taxes on employers, including state taxes (which vary by state) and the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax, which is 6 percent of the first $7,000 of each employee’s wages. However, employers who pay their state unemployment taxes on time receive an offset credit of up to 5.4 percent, meaning that the FUTA tax for an employee earning $7,000 or more may be as little as $42. The credit is reduced in states that are overdue in repaying unemployment insurance debt owed to the federal Treasury.

Quote
Only three states—Alaska, New Jersey and Pennsylvania—assess unemployment taxes on employees, and it’s a small portion of the overall cost.

So now Afghanistan won't be just supporting Al Queda like before 9-11, Al Queda will be helping to run the Afghan government.  Nice work Biden.

Taliban announce hardline caretaker government for Afghanistan:
...Two senior figures in the Haqqani Network, a US-designated terror group aligned with the Taliban and al Qaeda, will be in in the interim government. Both have been sanctioned by the United Nations and the US.
Sirajuddin Haqqani, the network's leader, will be the acting interior minister. Haqqani has been one of two deputy leaders of the Taliban since 2016 and has a $10 million US bounty on his head. Khalil Haqqani, Sirajuddin's uncle, was appointed as acting minister for refugees. Two other members of the Haqqani clan were also named to positions in the interim government....

Not only on the forums.

America and Americans care.  Buying more foreign oil means fewer American jobs and a transfer of American dollars to foreigners hurting our trade balance.  It means less profit for American corporations and less taxes paid to our government to support our country and people.  Biden is president now.  What he does counts.  He's dropped the ball with poor decisions.

You were called a liar?
It seems that the Afghanistan thread was re-opened.  We ought to continue discussions about it there.
You should (stick to your promises).
And:
America and Americans care.
Ah, thank you for speaking for all Americans (again).

And speaking of polls (the important ones that mean life and death), and those listening to *morons:

Quote
To hear many Republican politicians tell it, there's broad public opposition to vaccine requirements. The latest polling report from Gallup tells a different story.
Majorities of Americans now favor requiring people to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination to travel by airplane, stay in a hotel, attend events with large crowds, dine in a restaurant and go to their office or work site.
Gallup specifically asked respondents, "Would you favor or oppose businesses requiring people to show proof of coronavirus/Covid-19 vaccination in order to do the following over the next several months?" The findings included:

53 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to eat at a restaurant.
53 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to stay in a hotel.
56 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to go to work at an office or work site.
58 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to attend events with large crowds.
61 percent support requiring proof of vaccination to travel by airplane.

But the fact remains that for months, more than a few *Republican leaders have insisted that the public opposes vaccine requirements. "Vaccine passports," despite their anodyne history, somehow became an ugly slur in conservative circles.
