Yesterday I mentioned that Congress was thinking about sending everybody $600. Today I saw an article from one of the financial sites about what to do with the money once you get it. Here is one of their brilliant recommendations:

With $600? Really, that's their best advice? Have they got Marie Antoinette on staff? I was thinking maybe groceries and your utility bill would be good places to start. Of course if you had any left over, then you could bulk up your retirement savings.

Care to provide the graphs for CA and NY so we can have a baseline comparison on how much less deaths we can expect from locking down?
You'll see increases as well. This is happening, due to bone-heads all over the country and as I expressed earlier, thanks in large part to travel from ALL OVER during thanksgiving which was NOT recommended by the CDC.
The term "Lock down" is vague and differs in every state and here where I live, in every county. There has never been a total 'lock down' in the US and even the scientists and experts state it's not necessary. This entire 'lock down' debate is nonsensical and is based on a utter lack of leadership from Trump who was only concerned with getting elected and having the economy look good, so 'lock downs' equal bad.

You can have two states with identical populations with zero "lock downs" whereby one state has a majority of citizens who wear masks, social distance. The other state can claim all that is a fundamental infringement on their 'rights' and not abide by the recommendations of the CDC and scientist. The difference in infection rates will not be the same sir. This is an infectious virus. Those that limit where they go and abide by the guidelines of the CDC and similar scientific advise (unlike all those traveling to see Uncle Bob or to get their much needed Brisket) will end up with less infections. This is all really simple stuff in the actual battle.

You can have an 'open' economy, and do so more safely but the key is listening to the experts on infections diseases. Fill a restaurant indoors with people eating and talking without a mask? Not a good idea, not recommended. Should Restaurants go out of business because of this? No! It's why the Government needs to pay them to close. Eat outdoors, takeout? Fine.

"We" know how this virus spreads. "We" know how to limit infections. 'We' need to follow the science and pay those who must close up while the virus diminishes to be able to do so. Not all business in any economy is equally safe. What we can't do is overload the hospitals and we can't have 3600 Americans die a day; that's not good for any economy.

If common sense is common why are so many without it?

Trump told Woodward on March 19 that he deliberately minimized the danger. “I wanted to always play it down,” the president said. “I still like playing it down because I don’t want create a panic.”

Now what did Trump say about the 3600 who died yesterday?
What has he and his administration do about herd immunity?

So provide the baseline.  After all you are pushing this idea that lockdowns help, so I would like to have graphs to make a comparison to, as a baseline.  I mean CA and NY are heavy lockdown states, so they should be doing better, according to your logic, and it would be nice to have a comparison.

Don't forget the additional $300 in unemployment.  If you qualify, that's actually $1800 per person.

Just imagine what the magic of compound interest can do with $1800.  If you're 1, you perhaps could retire comfortably with that.

So provide the baseline.
Baseline for what?
Quote

I am not, the experts at the CDC and elsewhere are not. The term Lockdown is meaningless, provide a full definition of what it implies exactly and a baseline!
There are restrictions, such as too many people gathering and in some places, people gathering without masks. Because this IS an infectious virus; do you know understand those implications?
Is the idea of wearing a mask in surgery a difficult concept as to why it's done?
Quote
I mean CA and NY are heavy lockdown states, so they should be doing better, according to your logic
That's a logic you made up and assume.
This is logical and scientifically true: People who wear masks, social distance and don't gather, don't get an infectious virus as much or as often as those who don't follow these simple guidelines. We have to take into account the populations of the states, the number of visitors, those who DO NOT follow the CDC guidelines.
North Dakota has the most confirmed COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population of all U.S. states, while Vermont has the fewest, according to an analysis by The New York Times. Do you have data that ND had more or less 'lockdowns' than Vermont OR could be actually be, the behavior of the people living and visiting each state?
This again isn't close to rocket science; with an infectious virus, if you wear a mask, social distance, don't travel and mingle with others, there will be less infections.
I don’t know if you are purposely trying not to understand this, or if you are really struggling with it.

Rubbish. I haven't nor have the actual experts I listen to (as should you):

Copy and paste and note, the all important quotes around the word lockdowns. Because it's mostly an undefined (certainly by you) notion, FUD term used by a guy who has done next to nothing since losing the election about this horrible mess we're ALL in.

Now what did Trump say about the 3600 who died yesterday?
What has he and his administration do about herd immunity?

He continues to defy the election results and is pressuring Republicans on the state and national level to help in the effort. When it comes to the Covid virus he keeps saying that he is rounding the corner.

Quote
More than three thousand Americans died from COVID-19 this Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins University.  It marks the highest daily fatality count yet in this pandemic, exceeding the number of people that died on 9/11, all as the number of cases continue to explode across the country. Medical experts warn the worst is yet to come yet the president and president-elect are conveying competing views on the virus. President Trump praised his administration's handling of the pandemic even as his top lawyer was in the hospital with the coronavirus.

“It’s not complex at all.”

Wishing doesn't make it so. Read some legal briefs, court opinions, or listen to oral arguments. They certainly aren't simple.

Legal opinions are regularly described in simpler terms, as is often the case during news reports for example.  There is nothing that makes this ruling any different.

“You can’t claim you are indefinitely confined because of Covid or any other declared health emergency, or a governors orders.   If you do and you vote, your vote is illegal.”

Quote from: TechTalk

You can legally request an absentee ballot in Wisconsin based on age alone and the determination is made solely by the individual voter based on their current circumstances. Physical illness, infirmity, or disability also grant legal qualification—the determination is made solely by the individual voter based on their current circumstances.

ANY Wisconsin voter can request an absentee ballot.  The State is a no excuses State.  The only difference is that claiming indefinite confinement, the requirement to show Photos ID is waived. That has the potential to be a big deal when it comes to those wishing to commit vote fraud, which is why the Republicans took the case to court.

Back to my point, a Wisconsin voter can’t claim indefinite confinement just because there is a Safe At Home State order or for any other public health reason.  The Wisconsin Supreme Court issued an injunction in March that confirmed this.  Anyone who, after that date, that continued to claim Indefinite confinement on those grounds were breaking election law, and if they voted their votes would not count because they were not legally cast.

“People appeared to do so during the Presidential election based on the massive numbers of voters claiming indefinite confinement.’

Quote from: TechTalk

Appearances can be deceiving. Of course, if emotions override reason people will believe almost anything. That out of 3.3 million voters, 220,000 would meet one go the four legally qualifying conditions, which includes age, wouldn't exactly set off alarm bells—especially during a pandemic.

Every voter is entitled to request a mail in ballot for any reason, very little need to employ the Indefinite Confinement clause. Which might explain that  prior to the announcement that every voter should employ the indefinite confinement clause, that the numbers were so low.  It also might explain why the the numbers grew so quickly following the announcement from people who did not really qualify for the indefinite confinement clause.  It’s as valid of a theory as your “age related theory”.

“Wrap it in all the legalese you wish".

Quote from: TechTalk

It's not my wish. It's what the law and courts consider and require.

Actually no.  We are now outside of the court and legalese is notlonger required to have a conversation about the case.

Quote from: TechTalk

You just grossly over simplify.

I do not.

Bloviate all you wish, it won’t change a thing.

Quote from: TechTalk

I don't change anything regarding the matter, courts do.

Just like you failed to undermine my take on the court’s order.

“More endless bloviation.”

“Furthermore, if individual electors did not follow the statutory mandate and continued to vote as indefinitely confined, despite no longer meeting the statutory requirements, they would cast their votes contrary to the statute. In turn, because compliance with the absentee ballot process is mandatory, their ballots would not count.”

Quote from: TechTalk

If... a word with only two letters and frequently a great deal of importance.

Absolutely  IF a voter who declared indefinite confinement based on a faulty directive from an election official, and after that directive was reversed, decided to vote as indefinitely confined their vote would not be a legal vote.

“Illegal votes….fraud.”

Quote from: TechTalk

Speculation. Based on no apparent understanding of what fraud means in the law or to courts.

You are correct that I’m not a Lawyer, but I do know this.  Votes cast that break the election code are illegal, Voters who cast their vote knowing that their vote is in conflict with the election law is committing fraud.

Quote from: TechTalk

Wisconsin Supreme Court opinion in Donald J. Trump v. Joseph R. Biden, December 14, 2020:

We conclude the Campaign is not entitled to the relief it seeks. The challenge to the indefinitely confined voter ballots is meritless on its face

We conclude the challenge to indefinitely confined voter ballots is without merit

The challenge as submitted by the Trump team.  The relief asked was more than any court is going to grant regardless of the proof IMO.

Another court,  like SCOTUS might also disagree.  Or a court hearing a fraud case against a voter, they too might find the claims compelling.

“I can’t imagine a State Representative would be confused about the law…"

Quote from: TechTalk

Different courts routinely reach different opinions regarding questions of law, but you "can’t imagine a State Representative would be confused about the law”?

LOL!  This was a case at the Wisconsin Supreme Court about current election law…in the run-up to an election.  In a State where they were taking great pains to educate voters about how to vote by mail correctly.  We are talking about a sitting State Representative doing campaign work and even being an Elector to the Electoral College.  Yea right ..she had no clue.  /s

Quote from: TechTalk
Despite whatever assertions a talk radio station might make regarding election laws and fraud...
Designation of indefinitely confined status is for each individual voter to make based upon their current circumstance. It does not require permanent or total inability to travel outside of the residence.

Why yes your honor, although my client is not of old age, is in in good health and is not infirm, she does self identify as Indefinitely Confined.  And yes she has been campaigning for the upcoming election, attending parties, church services and serving as an elector to the electoral college.   But this your honor falls under the cover of “not requiring total inability not to travel outside of the residence”.

Sheesh.

In all seriousness, does Joe Biden even care if the people he picks can actually do the job?

In the last couple of days he has named:

Mayor Pete as transportation secretary whose qualifications include liking chew-chew trains as a kid, using Amtrak a few times in college, and proposing in the airport (which certainly puts to shame my proposal to my wife in Saint Mark's Square in Venice Italy.  I know Andrew, as a None, I should have made better decisions.).  That's it.  Oh, by the way, during Mayor Pete's mayorship the people of South Bend insist it was the worse time for pot holes they can remember, Domino's offered to donate money to help out, and his successor ran on fixing pot holes.

Denis McDonough is the incoming VA Secretary who never served in the military, and to be honest, I dont know why Biden did not just go for broke and make him Secretary of Defense.

His Secretary of the Interior and Energy department picks are making it obvious he will destroy the energy industry and raise energy prices.

Bob Iger is rumored as the incoming ambassador to China.  If Biden intends to bend over to China, I think he should just let us know.

The one bright side though is that he is naming perhaps the most inept cabinet merely to set an identity politic quota to hold together a weak coalition.  A coalition that itself is held together by just spit and masking tape.  This should be interesting, and make it easy for Republicans to win in 2022 and 2024.

When you say we can understand the meaning of, you mean yourself. Like Alan, it seems one side of this discussion feels the silly need to speak for others, probably because their one voice is not taken seriously by many people telling them so.
If YOU don't understand something, just ask for clarification.

In all seriousness, like Trump didn't?
If you really need multiple examples, ask.
Don't forget all those who correctly called him a moron or otherwise, or all the 'best people' he fired or quit.
When you give Biden a year or so, then you can comment on his picks and their actual abilities on the job. The last four years isn't going to be difficult to improve upon!

Yet you can't answer the question to the quip. A quip was only a bit funnier/sad than Craig's rhetorical question: Who needs the Vaccine.

I get it. Democrats criticized Trump's picks so Republicans criticize Biden's picks. Turn about is fair play. It's your turn, so have at it. I have no interest in doing a comparison of all of Trump's picks and all of Biden's picks, and then arguing about whose are worse. Some others may be up for it though.

If you don't need it, saving it rather than blowing it is good advice. But "bulking up" your retirement savings with $600 seemed like a hilarious choice of words to me. Maybe it didn't to you. So it goes. I'll be saving mine and giving it back to the government in April, so it's more like a loan anyway.

Yup, like Trump's big tax cut. Look who it helped the most. But either way, if the money is spent, it aids the economy. Or as my wife's grandfather would say: "Money is like manure, you gotta spread it around and watch things grow'. And no, I don't attribute that as his original quote, but he said it (and did it) often.
