OK...if not the model...what do you propose guides our decision going forward. Our fearless leader's hunches?

Historian Victor Davis Hanson gave an interview today and he made a point that deals with this exactly.  He essentially said there are two kinds of politicians when it comes to this, the pessimist and the optimist, and unfortunately the pessimist tends to win the political debate no matter how wrong he is.

The pessimist can make a prediction about how many will die, lets say 2.2M.  Now if 2.2M actually die, he can say look I told you so.  But if only 50K die, he can say exactly, thats because you took the necessary steps to avoid my prediction and I saved the day.  So he wins politically either direction even if he turns out to be an idiot.

Now if the optimist says that I think you are wrong, 2.2M wont die, it will be more like 50K.  If he is correct, then the pessimist can say you were only correct because I gave a bleak outlook that got the country's act together to avoid the 2.2M.  Of course if the optimist is wrong, then he obviously does not deserve any credit.

So in either case, politically the pessimist can, even if unjustified, claim victory.

This is exactly what is happening now.  Plain and simple.

So instead you simply say, well I don't know and neither do you so lets just chat away mindlessly?

In other words: the status quo.

But don't feel bad: every morning, as I have breakfast, I switch between Sky and BBC News channels. They are outbidding one another in rampìng up the terrors of staying home for one's own protection as much as for that of others; the weather is going to be fairly nice, and so it is now going to be physically impossible for people to stay indoors. The Sun God is going to send a ray of deadly sunlight into their homes and burn them all on the couches upon which they sprawl if they ignore his shiny beacon and stay inside.

Amazingly, a lazy population that was always being scolded into walking, taking the fat dog for a run, eating less crisps and drinking less beer is somehow the same, super-fit population that has always, without exception, jogged every morning in the local park before having an Olympic Committee-approved vitamin and protein-rich meal and then cycling briskly off to work. Suddenly, a world population of lazy, fat fucks in string vests is the same population of lazy fat fucks in Superman leotards that has this irresistible urge to get out there and exercise until sunset.

The truth, dear readers, is the same as it is for smoking: if you want to stop you stop; if you do not you do not. It depends on having a little thing inside your head called determination. When you know that staying home is for the mutual good and saves lives, there is no problem in following that sensible advice unless you want to create such a problem for yourself and for others.

What the news channels are doing is having a ball playing with the massed psychoses of world populations, psyching them up to think they are being set up to become slaves to Big Brother, Big Sister or even Daddy Bigbucks. (Did I forget to menton China, Iran or North Korea?)

Regarding the economy: I have come up with a solution to everything: when this crisis is over, simply cancel the time it lasted and carry on as it you had just awakened from a long nightmare.

The money spent saving Tom, Dick and especially Harry doesn't count: it's just artificial paper and promises. As long as all countries are willing to see it this way, there are no winners as there are no losers. There will be no slowed down economy as all the usual acquisitive motivators and desires never went away; the new goodies will fly off the shelves, boosted by the very time for which they had been unattainable. Being house-bound will have turned out to have been an advertiser's dream.

All's well that ends well.

;-)

Better than that doddering old fool the Dems have on thier plate.

That's an interesting observation; could you explain, for the edification of those who know not, the differences in worth (non-fiscal) between one glove puppet and another, please?

Yeah, but it probably had the benefit of a spelling-check device.

Sure, Trump can string together far too many somewhat intelligible sentences, while Biden can hardly string together one.

You may have missed the link that was supplied in the other thread. Things seem to be going south for Sweden now.

Pretty soon, the American dollar will be worthless.

The Fed just unleashed another $2.3 trillion to support the economy

So will the Euro.

European Central Bank throws 750 billion euros at the economy to fight the coronavirus crash

According to the article I posted updated today, it says that 40% of the Swedish population will be infected by the end of April.  What's going to be interesting is to watch and compare what happens in Sweden against other countries that had a lockdown. It will be informative to see which countries makes out better a year from now.  Which method of control is a better approach.  All the theories are just that.  Theories.  With Sweden going against the grain, we'll have a real-world test.

Btw, I like the unsubtle way you framed the question using "Sweden challenges Trump" as if Trump was the instigator of "stay at home."

Is there a web site where Trump trolls look up their talking points or obtain hints on how to phrase things to jam up social media discussions?

Robert,  That was the headline if the article.  Not my words.  I usually Italicize and Bold headlines when I post to show it's not my words but the article's. Then I provide the link. My words are the unbolded and unitalicized above the title. I don't try to deceive.  I thought doing that shows which is which. Maybe I should use a different approach.  Should I add quotes "...."  ????

Sweden has a population of about 10M. It has recorded 870 deaths. If we extrapolate that death count to the US population, we'd get about 28,000 deaths. Is that good?

I don't know.  If their country gains herd immunity so there is no secondary wave next year, while the rest of the world goes through a repeat and another shutdown and more deaths, then their approach might be better.  Time will tell.

Team allegedly sets new 'Cannonball Run' record on empty highways during coronavirus lockdowns

https://www.foxnews.com/auto/cannonball-run-record-empty-highways-coronavirus

Coast to coast in just over 26 hours.

The article mentions Ed Bolian, who has a website called VinWiki which has some really entertaining car stories, in the form of short interviews on video.
