There's a new prime ministerial ethic: you write a letter you are legally obliged to write but you don't sign it. You then send a signed letter saying you don't really want what the unsigned letter says that you need from the recipient.

So you thought only Mr T was inventive and economical with fact? Frankly, I think both he and our PM are off their heads. I think I believe it will all end with the men in white coats and ambulances.

What a world we have allowed; what scoundrels we employ.

I recently listened to a talk/interview podcast given by political economist from Brown's University that partly addresses this question. The podcast is an hour long. It it titled Global Trumpism but it has little to do with Trump himself, he just uses the phrase as a stand-in for the kind of pathological public governance we see around the world. Podcast link is https://www.cbc.ca/radio/ideas/global-trumpism-bailouts-brexit-and-battling-climate-change-1.5321199. It is part of CBC Radio's IDEAS series. It's not about the day to day of politics but takes a longer term view. He throws in an occasional wisecrack and has a Scottish accent, so he's entertaining too.

I believe it comes down to the little inner group of the Conservative party  - what, twenty-four or so of them? - that wags the body of the party which consists of a much larger number of members. I have said before that I always voted Conservative when I lived in the country, but I can tell you that has turned 180 degrees: I could never vote their way again after the revelation of the cancer at the party's centre: it is as corrupted any other political group that I can think of, only it has, until now, managed to hide it behind a neat business suit with matching tie; never has the guise of gentleman been so openly ripped aside to reveal the horror within. I hate them for their arrogance and absolute equanimity about lying to everyone, including, obviously, themselves.

The schoolboy pranks, no doubt, are but a Peter Pan complex encouraged through the required reading set up by their nannies. I wonder what Wendy would think of it all.

Robert, I didn't have the time to listen to "Global Trumpism".  But I did read the caption.  Isn't it wrong to blame Trump or Johnson for that matter for what's going on today?  They didn't cause the problems.  They are the result of the problems caused by previous politicians who governed the way they did.

Many regular Americans and Brits feel they have been left behind.  That there's a special class of rich and connected people who run the countries benefiting themselves.  In America, Sanders as well as Trump, sensed that unhappiness.  Apparently Johnson did as well.  But I'm not that familiar with the situation in GB.  Today, the socialist tendencies in America pushed by Sanders, Warren, AOC, and others, are feeding off that unhappiness although most Americans aren't yet ready for Socialism.  They still believe in the American Dream.  But the chemistry for another 2008 financial recession, or worse, are in the cards what with all the debt both parties have created, and printing of money by the Federal Reserve Bank. Others will have to explain if similar problems cause Brexit. But i think, regardless of the reason, the end result was the alienation of citizens on both sides of the Atlantic.

If you're in the listening mood, and watching too as it's a 20 minute video, here's a good explanation of why 2008 financial crisis  it's going to happen again, and probably very soon.

So you didn't listen to it but are making comments about it.

As I pointed out, the talk was NOT about Trump, he was simply using the title phrase for convenience, which he explains early in the talk. IN FACT, he doesn't blame Trump and he doesn't mention Johnson at all (that I remember). He tangentially refers to Trump and Brexit as symptoms of a wider problem. Your comments are utterly beside the point.

You have criticized a few posters for not including some introductory statements when presenting a link, as per forum rules. I have to ask, if you're not going to pay attention to those introductory remarks, nor listen to or read the contents of the linked material, why would you feel that your opinions are then relevant. This is incoherent.

The podcast was provided for edification because I thought it represented an interesting outlook. Your opinion about something you haven't heard is of no interest to me.

Robert, I understand very well what his point was without listening.  It was described clearly in the article you linked to with the podcast. Maybe you should read it.   The article explained the podcast better than your post.

My point is since it had nothing to do with Trump, he should not have "conveniently" called it "Global Trumpism"  It sounds like another smear of Trump. Trump didn't cause why people wanted Trump.  The article clearly stated it was government policies of the past that created the atmosphere where a Trump could be elected.  I expanded that to include Boris Johnson because similar past history created similar policies that got Brexit approved and Johnson elected.  Trust me.  I'm keeping up.  :)

Apparently, you neither listened to the podcast or read the article describing it.  You're not keeping up.  :)

I am not sure how you reached that conclusion. I don't comment on every post.

How do you know if you didn't listen to it? In any case, you are incorrect and have misunderstood, and at this point, I would say that this is deliberate on your part.

You have missed the point completely, but that's ok, I did not post the link specifically for you to listen or respond to. It was for general information. It has become abundantly clear that you believe that it is your job to keep repeating the same sound bites regardless of the current subject matter.

Who listens to every podcast posted in a forum?  Especially one hour podcasts?  Most of the time, I read the summaries provided.  If the writer summarized the podcast poorly, shame on him.  That's not my problem.  I didn't misunderstand anything.  I'll let others read the article and judge if I misunderstand his point.

No one asked you to listen or read anything. If you're not interested enough in the subject matter, then ignore it, that's perfectly ok. Just don't presume to tell us what it was about.

It's nonsensical for you to double down on this, no one was insulting your precious Trump. There was nothing to defend him against.

Britain French friends block three month Brexit extension.  No wonder why you want to get out.

The funniest part was the piano lady, turning the music sheets, while all the time playing a simple, repetitive chord that a two-year old would remember  :)
