Of course it becomes inevitable: one would be dealing with sovereign nations that, by definition, have natural, sovereign borders; secondly, one of them remains part of a larger grouping to which it subscribes, and with whom it has other, secondary boundary agreements it cannot breach.
The Northern Ireland border sell is just that: another Brexiteer bare-faced lie visible to all, including the Brexiteering voters. That they
know this but vote for it regardless is a sign of the times, mirrored here on these pages with the Dem/Rep arguments, where intelligent - some highly - people understand and recognize the lies and the failings of both sides of the argument, but yet cannot bring themselves to do anything but cheer for the home team.
Frankly, I think we are at a point in history where a dramatic change is going to hit us, something worldwide and on a different scale to anything we have witnessed before. I feel it is inevitable because the old internal
and external groupings are falling apart as we write.
Far from the European Union model being outdated, I think it was a well-considered, prescient concept by serious minds anticipating this current scenario.
Ties with America? I think a few posters here have it about right: the US can be isolationist and survive; most other countries are too small for that. Why would It want to form strong links with a tiny country that has proved itself capable of choosing commercial suicide by turning its back on its closest and best customers, and not only customers, but providers of employment in co-production endeavours? What would make the US imagine that it would be treated with more common sense, and not be ditched for even more unlikely combinations with the old empire? It amazes to see that so many think that empire has left a trail of thankful people who would love nothing more than to have it back. Must be the same kool-aid as those in Hong Kong have sipped, those who dream about a new British sovereignty there.
