Well, I could not agree with you more. It is just that my mom thought me to always find something nice to say before pointing to any negatives. With the abundance of great fashion shooters world wide it seem very odd to see Andrej Kopac following last year winner. What were they thinking just says it.
Also after searching deeper August Bradley on net I can not figure out how did he ended up in in the Upcoming category ( less than a year pro ??? ) Neverless great work and outstanding PS skills.

Jimenez portrait work is just flooded with basic mistakes or I am just an ignorant who do net get the art.

I'm having trouble getting my pic to load. If you can see it, it was taken in the last hour as a teat for the new Mamiya Macro "D" lens, 0.6 sec at f16 ISO 100.

I took a second look and to be fair the "fine art" winner was not bad, the rest really is boring and bland at best, downright amateurish at worst. With so many submissions it's beyond me how they came up with those winners. I mean we're talking about a competition called Hasselblad MASTERS here.. seriously, it makes me laugh.

I thought I'd send along another image.  This was originally shot as a headlight exposure for strip but the picture grew on me and it's now the lead image in a direct mail piece I'm designing.  The car is a 1921 Farman, the camera is a Mamiya 645 and the back is a P45.  Jim[attachment=4787:attachment]

For me winning competitions has been huge.  It gets your name out there and gets you on peoples e-mail lists.  Why not enter a competition if you think you can win.

For a certain type of photographer, say fine art for example, competitions are a great way to build your reputation and help people recognize and remember your name.  If your a commercial photographer then a competition may be pointless.  But I am sure the PDN competitions bring a lot of business.

You seem to be skipping the step of how to get in that meeting with the client in the first place.

I don't know how it is related, but I was just selected as one of the winners in the PDN/National Geographic Competition  and I have been getting a ton of e-mails asking for images for editorial work, from big name magazines. The contest winners won't even be published until the February issue of PDN and I am already getting a lot of contacts because of it.    So somebody is seeing my work due to this contest.

Also I always see Chase Jarvis's photos in contests.  He is one of the more successful lifestyle photographers.
