Thanks, Chris; despite now having developed a resigned kind of nature, neither a positive nor a negative one, I find it virtually impossible to enjoy working with snaps unless I go as “noir” as I can take ‘em - without losing sight of what the thing actually is. It’s that Japanese gentleman: he’s under my skin!

Your focus is sharper—again, both figuratively and literally.

(Nothing against Moriyama.  I know his work was groundbreaking in its day and I think some of it has worn well over time.  But like most disruptive artists, he was pushing against the boundaries of what worked, and inevitably sometimes beyond them.)

In the literal sense, yes, sharper, but perhaps that’s partly due to the iPhone I’m using.

I suspect that if I attempted the same stuff using my D200, it would look a bit less crisp; that’s probably something I have discovered using my old manual Nikkors: maybe they don’t calibrate accurately with the viewfinder screen. Having said that, if I am actually missing focus with them, it might be because with my analogue Nikons I had the great advantage of a split-image screen in the pentaprism. Checking a silly little focus light isn’t a brilliant technique, and very distracting. Frankly, having made use of it on tripod-based shots, it’s disconcerting to see just how vague an aid that light actually is in practice. I think I remember everything being better on the D700, but that’s now a lost cause. I loved that camera. ;-(

However, it’s really been the iPhone that’s got me back snapping; I had pretty much given up carting a heavy, dedicated camera with me when I went out of the house.

When I was sixteen, I could write my name in the snow with pee. Today, the cold would make it impossible to achieve that. I wish iPhones had existed back then; what a wonderful logo such a snap could have made. I hereby copyright the concept.

Snow in Mallorca?

Usually, every winter up in the mountains. Highest point is Puig Mayor, at 1,440 metres. The USA used to control two huge radar domes up on top. Now there is one. However, when I was sixteen I lived in Scotland.

Mallorca, as a permanent residence, came when I was forty-four; I suppose, in retrospect, it was a kind of shared mid-life crisis that my wife and I took as a prompt.

Life was so much more civilised then: on our first flight as one-way tourists, we brought our own crystal glasses, chicken sandwiches, and bought those tiny bottles of airline white wine. So much more cool than standard onboard fare. Today, that crystal probably wouldn’t make it through security. Yeah, them wuz the days, all right.

Any sea fogs there ?

There has been lots of “calima”, which is what the folks on the Spanish news service call the Saharan dust that often blows up northwards to us. It reminds me of a lighter version of the choking shit that filled British cities during the 50s and earlier. Fortunately, the death of much heavy engineering and steel production put an end to it.

We used to have a very good tram system in Glasgow, networking across the city and into the various suburbs. Sometimes, if caught out by that fog when in the city, visibility really down to about ten feet, I could find my way home in the car because I remembered where the various tramlines branched off into different routes. Lost sentinels…

I don’t remember seeing much honest to goodness sea fog, though, it is a rare phenomenon here. The most impressive fog I remember was once when my wife and I were driving to Scotland: we came out of Andorra and there, below us over France, was this sea of fog or cloud beneath the mountains. It was like flying in the Ford… Beautiful sight.

Yes, Keith, the “gutter” effect was something I tried to incorporate from the start of this magazine/book spoof. I decided that I liked it, and it’s given me a couple of additional PS steps along the way ever since!

Incidentally, in contrast to what I’d been moaning about yesterday or the day before, the total change in weather has forced my mojo to depart its tropical hideaway and come right back home where it belongs. Thank God for that!
