I can only repeat: what the hell's happening to that country; do the citizens know, care, or feel too worried to do anything to save it before it’s too late?

Somewhere, I read a suggestion about a possible second American Civil War. Let's hope sense prevails, and some new brooms do some badly needed housekeeping chores.

This is a CNN report about how ICE operates differently in red and blue states  (short article) https://www.cnn.com/2025/08/05/us/immigration-arrests-community-ice-invs.

He is just so obviously trying to provoke overreaction so he can point to blue states as the "enemy". You almost have to admire the audacity. We can only hope that people aren't gullible enough to fall for it.

More from the former "pardon" lawyer about the recent Minnesota shooting by an ICE officer https://www.youtube.com/shorts/8IFiAgFlt5s. It's interesting to see all the roadblocks put in place to shield law enforcement when it acts badly. You would think that it would be in the best interests of the state to not do that if they want to instil confidence in law enforcement.

Pretty much an iron-clad protection that removes any need to behave responsibly. With all the filmed evidence it should be an open and shut conviction, but probably won’t ever come to court unless there is powerful public demonstration, but you know where that can go, too. Conveniently, Iran provides distraction enough from domestic embarrassments, and a great occasion for foreign posturing, too.

Just watched an interesting documentary on Mr T and the Russian connections. It was a Spanish translation, and the English language interview comments that were able to come through were very much critical of Mr T and delved into the Russian offer to arrange permission and finance from Intourist, to facilitate the construction of a Trump hotel in Moscow. Apparently, this first offer neatly “coincided” with Trumpian fiscal problems due to the Atlantic City casino stramash. The plot became increasingly difficult for me to follow because of language and my trying to grasp the English bits first; better to have ignored them! Anyway, it dug further into the Mrs Clinton case, where apparently Ukraine had been used to offer incriminating evidence against her during that election campaign. I ended up thinking that everybody in power is a born liar.

Trump mentioned Iceland earlier today. Someone must have lent him an Atlas or maybe he wants a volcano. He's obviously gaga and getting worse by the day.

Amazingly, the leaders of Denmark were polite enough to meet with those two nitwits Rubio and JD Vance. I hope they counted the silver.

He then went on to clarify how to spell “whole milk.” “It’s actually a legal definition—‘whole milk.’ And it’s whole with a w, for those of you that have a problem.”

Is the president riffing on milk part of the whole "flood the zone" thing.

We should reflect on this: Denmark and other countries are reportedly mobilizing troops to Greenland to defend it against invasion by the United States. Who could have predicted that? Putin and the rest must be laughing so hard they risk rupturing something.

What happened to the US that it could elect such ineffective and spineless politicians in the Congress and Senate all at the same time? They're watching import taxes (aka tariffs) destroy their economy for no good reason and they're doing nothing about it. They must think that their job is only to get elected.

ICE agents shot some other guy. I think that most people in other countries have always found US police to be trigger happy in general but these ICE guys aren't even going after real bad guys, so why are their guns drawn at all? It looks like deliberate policy to me. Why is there not much more outrage that Trump can do this mostly to blue states? I never watch US commercial news stations, is it possible that people don't know it's going on because they're in their own news bubble that's telling them something else? I have to say that from the outside things look bad.

This is all self-inflicted. You had wealth, you had peace, why are you doing this to yourselves? What's the upside?

The only upside is the conservative and far right wing of the republican party have their day and show the country how bad they are at managing the US. The voters will respond in November. Democracies are slow ships to turn. They work best by consensus. That is why politicians appear spineless and witless. When an unfettered renegade pushes the limits to see what can be gotten away with, we can slip towards authoritarian forms, either right or left wing,  that override and destroy conventional politics.
We will swing back.

Actually, all it takes is for the medical men in white coats to be called in. Sadly, I expect somebody first has to summon them, and there’s the gigantic rub. Personally, I think it’s the kindest route back to stability. The FL will probably still be there to mop any fevered brow, and if reality is as attractive as the online vision, no bad way to have one’s brow patted: there are far worse fates of which I can think. She most certainly looks good in pale blue.

I’m drawn to the name Canon, but it’s only a guess based on the “melting Mars bar” look of the top part. The photographer seems one cool dude. I thought car glass was stronger. I couldn’t understand a word the guy in uniform was saying: it sounded like “taxi” or “tax seat.” Maybe it’s just my ears. Is it another ICE situation, or Iran, which would excuse my ears?

Nothing is ever as simple as it can seem.

Take the current ICE project: i assume its function is meant to be the kicking out of illegal immigrants. If that’s what it does, then nobody can honestly complain about the objective there: all countries reserve the right of admittance.

However, there are ways of doing this that do not depend on brute force and the use of deadly weapons unless the officers find themselves under armed attack. Brute force serves to alienate even some of the people who would otherwise support the action of tightening national borders.

Britain is, and has for quite some time, been targeted by people crossing the Channel from France and other parts of Europe hoping to settle in the UK and find there whatever they imagine they might find. As a result, and this I know from the experience of family members working in schools, classes contain groups of so-called students who are incapable of being taught, simply because they have no grasp of English. As a result, overcrowding and tensions arise, to the detriment of the kids who are indigenous to the country. There used to be classes where these foreigners received special help, but in the instances to which I refer, such help vanished long ago because there are not the funds to continue.

My mother lived here in Spain for a while. She eventually had to go back to Scotland and was horrified to discover that some services she had taken for granted would be open to her, simply by virtue of nationality, were not: she had to wait six months before becoming eligible again. Some immigrants find themselves in receipt of better treatment than that!

Brexit was touted to be the answer, that Britain would once again own its borders and be able to keep out those not welcome. Of course, that was bullshit: the illegals just kept right on coming. Those skilled foreign people who keep the UK National Health Service on its feet - just - found themselves in a difficult spot: legally in Britain, they didn’t know if they would be allowed to stay, be able to afford to stay, or discover too much local dislike to stomach day after day. The “illegals” problem is already creating a lot of damage in southern Europe, and I can promise you that many folks here would be a lot happier if their social services money was spent on them, not on people with whom there is no connection.

As I suggest, it’s really too easy to confuse the theory behind the existence of the heavies with the behaviour of some of the heavies themselves. However, no country can afford to lie back and just give up. Neither should it have to do so.

The objective and the results don't sync up! Not when the results are a woman being shot in the head for following an ICE agent's direction.
As for the results sadly:

The stats that I've seen online or heard about in podcasts suggest that the Biden, Bush and Obama administrations all deported illegals in similar or higher numbers (per year) than Trump has and they didn't need ICE to do it. I think they primarily targeted the more dangerous criminals. As always, Trump is incompetent,  and he hires incompetents, no news there. Had he actually gone after the criminal nasties, that would be useful, but the ICE deployment is a TV show for rednecks. Immigration violators (as opposed to imported drug dealers, say) have committed misdemeanours so they hardly deserve the treatment they're getting. When you add in the time wasted detaining actual US citizens, well it's the usual Trumpistan shit show, isn't it.

I saw a news item today where ICE detained some native Indians. I guess they didn't look white enough either.

Trump threatened 15% extra tariffs to any country that trades with Iran. Somebody lent him an Atlas again and he rediscovered Iran. He hasn't bombed there in a while. Maybe someone could start a poll to see who will be invaded next: New Zealand? Some of the tech bros are already down there building their underground armageddon bunkers, which sound like real estate deals Trump had no cut of, that can't go on. Didn't Michael Moore make a movie "Who will we invade next?", I think was the title or something close to that.

Instead of arresting and deporting actual real criminals, he's wasting time and effort rounding up people who are working in the economy. Their forced departure should have opened up more jobs for all those native-born real Americans who were being denied work, but the jobs stats don't look good anyway. And that's after Trump fired the Biden appointee statistician whose job numbers Trump didn't like.

Should a country decide on a useful immigration strategy and implement it. Of course. Every past immigration wave brought economic benefits, it is well documented, so, obviously, managing immigration policy is important.  But you've seen what this administration and the Congress/Senate are like, or even what the previous several have been like, is it any surprise that no progress was made.

Immediately after the Venezuelan action, Trump bad-mouthed the leader of the "opposition" (that actually won the last election) but now that she "gave" him her Nobel prize, he suddenly likes her. The Nobel prize comes with a cash component, as I understand it, did she have to give him some of that, I wonder. Sure went to a lot of trouble, couldn't he have just bought a facsimile on eBay.

This isn't normal behaviour, not even close.

If Trump goes away to be replaced by JD Vance, we can look forward to a continuation of the farce. Vance was quoted as saying that Denmark hasn't done a good job of protecting Greenland's security. In the strictest sense, that's a bit true, an aggressively expansionist country is now threatening Greenland's sovereignty.

Trump is gaga, everyone knows it. His own bum boys are now pushing against declaring an insurrection in Minnesota and also against the Greenland push. They must be worried about re-election. THAT, they understand, THAT is sacred Everything else is up for grabs. The latest threat are "wine moms". You'll have to do your own online search about that. I read an article about them and it made no sense to me, more 'flood the zone' randomness I figure. The American alt-right must be the most fearful people on earth, they find threats everywhere. They now actually seem to think that a bunch of midwestern moms are a threat to ICE agents.

Putin is taking advantage of the sanity vacuum in the US by threatening Europe with nuclear bombs again if they interfere in Ukraine. I guess they don't like the military build-up in Germany and France and other countries, especially as they send troops to Greenland to ward off the US threat. Did Trump and Putin have a deal on the spoils of Greenland? An intra-NATO confrontation is exactly what Putin wants of course. If Trump is not a Putin puppet, he's the next best thing.

As I have written before, the whole concept of presidential pardons stinks. To think the US became the US in order to finish with kings…
