Much of the tv I see appears to indicate a post-apocalyptic future where it doesn’t really matter anymore at all. Perhaps that’s the attraction: ten days in the gym and all those government guys are Rambo.

I watched a tv documentary yesterday about the rise and fall of the original Russian oil oligarchs, and how the St Petersburg mafia was slowly introduced to displace the original wide boys with Putin’s homies. Then, that accomplished, the gas network was next.

The program explained how Germany was seduced into becoming Russia’s foreign end of the new gas line, cutting out the value of the existing Ukrainian pipes and turning Europe hostage to continuation of the through-Germany flow. Genius. It all left Ukraine a bit derailed, if not irrelevant…

It seems, in glorious hindsight, how dumb was Europe to pin its defence faith upon USA fidelity. Now, the blinkers torn off, we see how naïve that was. I wonder how long Europe will be able to retain access to LuLa, amongst other foreign Internet addresses… we, as Europeans, should have been fiercely independent in everything from the start.

LuLa is a Canadian site, although you'd never guess that from the contents of this particular thread. :)

The French islands of St Pierre and Miquelon are about 15 km off the coast of Newfoundland so you could make a case that Canada should be part of the EU. I, for one, would love to have access to smaller European-spec cars instead of what's currently for sale around these parts. (Btw, on our way to a local coffee shop yesterday, the local Ford dealer had a sign up advertizing a $25,000 rebate on some pick-up truck model or other. Not long ago, you could buy an entire car for $25,000. Imagine how you'd feel if you had bought that same truck model two months ago at full sticker! The thing is probably rusting by now.)

Trumpistan propaganda says that the US spent a lot of money protecting the rest of the world. It was a bad move for the rest of the world to fall into the trap of taking advantage of that, which would be true even without the rise of Trump. Trump tried to make it sound as if all these countries were taking advantage of US largesse. They can blow that smoke out their arse end. That would not have happened if it had not suited the US, so they can keep that revisionist history for the xenophobic Florida high school history classes where it belongs. The US got a lot in return for keeping military bases in Europe and elsewhere or they would not have done so. Besides other advantages they got to be the de facto leader of the "free world" that has both hard and soft power advantages. If they back away from that and Europe et al fund their own defense, a good idea regardless, it will also mean that they will call their own shots and won't need/want to bend to the will of the US. Americans say that they want to be isolated, let's wait to see if they really want that. I wouldn't trust Trump's analysis, he still thinks the US runs the world and that their economy is doing well. Some of it it of course. For an isolationist-leaning country, they sure are sticking their nose and bombers into a lot of different countries lately.

Listen to Trump's latest public pronouncements and tell me if you'd trust the orders of that clown when he tells you to charge out of the trench. He is not a well man, he's not firing on all cylinders. Funny how many of the people who objected to age related senility on the part of Biden are quieter now. It's all partisan bs all the way down.

Canada's own lack of investment in the protection of our arctic waters is shameful. I think it's because most people only ever see the flatened view of the world in those maps and don't have a spinning globe on their desks, so they don't see how close Russia is to Canada. That's a complete failure of imagination, a multi-generational one. Of course, Canada and the US patrolled the north jointly because we assumed we had common interests. It should have woken us up when Lyndon Johnson and Bush were annoyed with Canada not wanting any part if the Vietnamese and Iraqi military "exercises". Not surprisingly, the goals of the two countries no not always align, even though they often do and should.

In other news, CBS may be turning into the new FOX. The irony makes me laugh out loud. On these pages in the past I've had to listen to the usual suspects preach about the bias of publicly funded news agencies. What a load of bullshit. The CBC, BBC, TVO and PBS are the ONLY ones I pay attention to. The fact that all politicians at some point criticize them for being biased is to my mind the main indicator that they're at least trying to do journalism. The commercial network news suppliers are ratings-based clickbait jokes. Did they think no one would notice?

There’s a clip of a TV interview with Mike Pence online where he basically says that the idea of using the military in Greenland is batshit crazy. He didn’t use those words.

There is also a clip of a speech on the floor by a Senator that more or less says the same thing. The gutless weenies have finally had enough of Trump maybe? Or maybe they saw the recent poll numbers and are worried for their jobs. Or they've realized that Trump is as nutty as everyone has been saying. Or maybe ICE shooting to death a US citizen is a step too far, even for them.

Wow, spines.

Yes, I know LuLa was born of a Canadian Daddy, but the reference was to the networks that carry the transmissions being American, as they are everywhere, to the best of my knowledge. Europe has tried to make a stand regarding taxation of the huge profits American players have made in Europe out of Europeans using the services, and though it seems strangely acceptable to American politicos that they lose tax revenue because some of those American companies headquarter themselves in Ireland because of Ireland’s generous tax laws/rates, they complain about local, national taxation on those companies’ operations in the rest of Europe! You kinda wonder whose hands are actually in whose accounts.

Yes, that ICE shooting was a disgrace. It seems that the States are slipping quickly into a situation where freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate are becoming threatened under paper thin excuses, much to the cost of that uncomfortable country. As with Iran, one wonders if the time for change through demonstration has passed, and totalitarian statehood is becoming the norm, like it or not. Who would have imagined that could come to be? Isn’t it strange to see ICE doing exactly what the Gestapo did so well just prior - and during WW 2: rounding people up and disappearing them?

Spines growing, cracks towards Trump. 🥳

“A band of House Republicans bucked party leaders to join Democrats in passing a measure to restore expired Obamacare subsidies through the end of President Donald Trump’s term, as rising health care costs drive midterm election anxieties.
The House voted 230-196 Thursday to send a three-year extension of the expired tax credits to the Senate. Seventeen Republicans supported the measure. ”

The Senate on Thursday unanimously agreed to hang a plaque honoring the officers who protected the Capitol when it was under attack by a pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6 five years ago. The bipartisan resolution was introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., after House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., refused to hang the plaque as required by a 2022 federal law.

“Dozens of Republicans voted to override two of President Donald Trump’s vetoes Thursday. It was the first time this Congress tried, but failed, to block the president when he refused to sign legislation that both chambers approved.”

That's doubly interesting because I just saw a quote attributed to that Turberville guy that Jan 6 was a hoax. Talk about derangement. See https://www.tuberville.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/tuberville-objects-to-democrats-attempts-to-re-write-history-about-the-january-6th-hoax/.

Has the definition of "hoax" changed while I wasn't paying attention.

We are unlucky with our current world leaders... that are better in destroying things than building things.
The latter being far more diffcult.
In the case of the US and Israel the people have chosen these leaders and are equally responable for the mess and human suffering.

Apparently, Trump has been quoted as saying “I don’t need international law and my power is limited only by my own morality"!

I wonder how many governors are considering calling up the National Guard to protect their citizens from ICE.

I have to ask, is the purpose of ICE to provoke rioting in the streets to justify martial law? It's not as if Trump needs much justification. One thing is certain, all this will work to limit immigration like nothing else.

Another thing that strikes me is the utter vacuousness of Corporations playing the "corporate values" card so that consumers will identify with them.

Didn't Vance make some statement about war powers act not being constitutional or something. I didn't read the article, I can only take so much bs at one time. The gist might have been that he thinks that Presidential powers could/should not be curtailed, is that it? I guess he sees his time arriving soon and wants the levers. I wonder what he has in mind, the sky's the limit with this tribe. I gather he's a big time believer in Thiel's "ideas", so what can go wrong there.

It might be the case that much of the current difficulty exists because of the people in charge simply being so rich. It’s possible that a sense of entitlement is so inbred that it isn’t ever seen by that person to be what it is. If most people never say no to one, then enlightenment is hard to achieve.

Since I was a teenager in school studying history, I've often wondered why the 'apparently educated people' in power continue to repeat the disastrous conflicts that have occurred in the past, especially considering that a basic tenet of Christianity is 'Love Thine Enemy', and a basic tenet of Buddhism is,'"One should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should one incite another to kill."

I can only assume that the basic instinct of all life-forms consists of a drive to exert control over the surrounding environment, in the interest of their own survival and progress. This involves a competition for resources. Even plants will compete for nutrients and water in the soil.

However, the good news is that the percentage of the world population that suffers the direct consequences of devastating conflicts, has been decreasing as civilization evolves.

There is significant archaeological evidence that shows widespread and deadly warfare existed long before the development of the earliest civilizations, and the casualty rates in some prehistoric conflicts, as a percentage of the total population, appear to have been significantly higher than in 20th-century state-level wars.

Just one example is the Jebel Sahaba cemetery in Sudan, which dates to 13,000 to 14,000 years ago. It contains the remains of dozens of individuals, nearly half of whom showed signs of violent death from arrows or spears.

If the heat increases too much and they decide to scapegoat the ICE shooter that leads to charges being laid, which I doubt very much, and even if they convict him of something at some Soviet show trial, Trump will pardon him. That's my cynical prediction. If charges are laid, the ICE guy's lawyer should move for a really speedy trial instead of stalling, which is the usual defence stance. He needs to be convicted and sentenced while Trump is still breathing to get that pardon. The last I heard the federal agencies were keeping the official evidence away from state and city law enforcement, they need to keep this federal for a pardon to work. Or Trump could issue a pre-emptive pardon after the smoke has cleared a bit.

But maybe they'll get away with just waiting it out. I mean, what can anyone really do.

You perfectly predicted the nonsense at 10:15:44AM, which then took place at 10:22:34, from the Trump - Pavlov's dog.  :)

Thank goodness for Judges + TDS, in the last 48 hours:

Judge Blocks Trump Admin. From Freezing Social Services Funding:
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from freezing $10 billion in social services funding for five Democratic-led states.

Judge blocks Trump’s elections order in lawsuit by vote-by-mail states Oregon and Washington:
A federal judge on Friday blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from enforcing most of his executive order on elections against the vote-by-mail states Washington and Oregon, in the latest blow to Trump’s efforts to require documentary proof of citizenship to vote and to require that all ballots be received by Election Day.
