Agreed, one hundred percent.

Trouble is, improving society means different things to different folks. If you are simply thinking in economic terms, how, then, do you explain the many rich people who use the drugs? I suspect it’s a mixture of peer pressure, boredom and stupidity combined with a massive lack of imagination, the latter being the most obvious protective factor any human would be expected to possess.

To be fair, there may be lots of people who use various drugs and manage quite well. As many do with alcohol. We probably shouldn't assume every non-prescription drug user is a down and out crime waiting to happen. I don't know enough to know what percentage that is. All the untold millions who use them in their lives without bad consequences could legitimately ask why are these drugs criminalized in the first place? We allow people to do all kinds of things that have potentially bad consequences but we trust adults to manage their own lives.

That’s the trouble: alcohol and tobacco are both linked to cancer and other deaths. There are no safe drugs, and the two mentioned just happen to be - kinda - socially acceptable. I used to smoke and drink with the best of them, but seeing symptoms that I felt duplicated in my wife’s uncle, and how throat cancer did for him, I felt it prudent to quit the ciggies there and then. Why did I even start? Simple: along with other idiots of my tender years at that time, I imagined cigarettes and booze were both echoes of masculinity. When my better half was in the car, I used to ask her to light one for me. Thank God she hated the taste and the smell, and I never had that on my conscience when she died.

Wine was nice with meals, as was a G&T before that, but it never ceases to surprise me how one glass was never enough, and three just the right signal for opening another bottle. I was one of the lucky ones. When I lost my wife I lost my appetite for wine, too: it's just so pathetically miserable sitting alone nursing a glass. That said, though I would have given it up completely, I kept getting those cardiologists telling me that a glass of red per day was good because red is high on antioxidants… later, a doctor told me I’d be better off quitting entirely, so I did.

Now, rereading that information online, I see it suggested that antioxidants can lower problems associated with the eyes. I'm currently bothered by an infection that has outlasted and outwitted four visits to the family doc and two to the local hospital, over a period of about three months. The symptoms are tearsdrops and a constant redness of the edges of the lids, with roughness on the skin below the lids. Maybe I should go back to the Rioja. Sod it, that’s what I’ll do.

I saw some funny comments on Facebook.

In the first, Treasury Secretary Bessent was quoted saying that illegal aliens brought their cows with them across the border, which wreaked havoc with beef market prices or something like that. The commenter said that it was pretty weird to have their own beef but that they still had to eat dogs. I wonder how they got the herds across the border, the wall must be low in spots. It's not clear to me why smuggled cows should increase beef prices.

JD Vance blamed all the illegal aliens for buying up all the houses, which is why there is a shortage of housing now. A commenter wondered how people who don't work and overtax the welfare state can afford to buy houses.

Newspeak.

I keep coming back to this idea of undocumented immigrants smuggling cattle into the USA in numbers high enough to affect nation-wide beef prices. That would have to be a lot of cows. How come the ICE guys haven't found them? Could be that while the ICE guys were storming the apartment buildings they might have missed the herd in the parking lot. Also, cattle kind of stinks so maybe their masks are preventing them from noticing. My advice to Noem and her stormtroopers would be to look for lots of hay.

Thanks for your concern but I retired a while ago now.

But tell me, do you believe that undocumented immigrants brought in large herds of cattle, which upset beef prices? I mean, seriously now, do you actually believe that?

Do you think Bessent believes that? If you don't think that he actually believes that, do you think that's an appropriate answer for the Treasury Secretary to give to the country? I'm being serious here, take your polarized political hat off for a second, was that an appropriate way for a government official to speak to voters?

To my mind, at best, it's an insult. Were you not insulted by his statement?  If not, why not?

Let me educate you a bit: "Context: Bessent was not saying that migrants were bringing diseased cows with them to the U.S. specifically, but to North America — in particular, Mexico, which was dealing with new cases of screwworm."

I don't recall any mention of bringing "diseased" cows, but I'll look that up, try to find the clip from Bessent's interview. If what you say is true, I apologize for jumping the gun, but the jokes are still funny.

Let me educate you a bit: "Context: Bessent was not saying that migrants were bringing diseased cows with them to the U.S. specifically, but to North America — in particular, Mexico, which was dealing with new cases of screwworm."

I took a quick look at the Bessent clip and watched some clips about screwworm. I get the impact of the disease on beef imports, but I assume this kind of stuff is part of what food importers deal with all the time. Happened in the past with British and US beef imports into Japan for different reasons, I have a vague memory of that. Spotting and stopping these kinds of outbreaks must be SOP, although I don't know which federal agency would be in charge. I hope it's not one that DOGE clobbered.

Is DOGE still around, btw?

But it's still not obvious to me what this has to do with undocumented immigrants. It's a bit hard to believe that desperate migrants could bring enough cattle from South America that it would affect Mexican beef herds. Can you really cross a bunch of different borders with cattle in tow and in numbers large enough to matter? On the face of it, it doesn't seem plausible, seems more like Bessent is just mashing two issues together, undocumented immigrants and screwworm. That's my personal gut feel anyway. I mean, if he had more details, wouldn't he have given them? Given that Trump wants to import Argentinian beef, it maybe deserves a deeper look. I've always thought that South American beef was well regarded worldwide but things change all the time.

Anyway, there is a still an Epstein barrage going on in the media, so I doubt anything else will get much notice. Enjoy your steak tonight.

If they developed a vaccine for screwworm, would anti-vaxxers still eat steak? Maybe invermectin will work, it's a dewormer, isn't it?

Just one more note. Bringing up the screwworm angle was a useful contribution to this thread. Thanks.

It's not so much moving the cattle as having herds relatively close. The flies move as they can - any  mammal can be host. Humans can bring them as well if they are bitten. That is also a real concern if not treated and larvae removed from under the skin.  We stopped them once before and eradicated them all the way down to Panama. But programs were defunded and not maintained. Now they are back to the Texas border and we are setting up biological and pesticide barriers as well as rigorous inspection of animals where possible both in Mexico and Texas.

That's a common theme all over isn't it. A problem is seemingly solved so we let our guard down but the pathogens don't go away. Canada lost its "free of measles" status recently, something that was completely avoidable. It takes resources to maintain a modern safe state, why do people have an issue with that. We should be happy to pay a few bucks to keep diseases away.

Fact Check:: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said migrants bringing diseased cows are behind high beef prices

In November 2025, a rumor spread that U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had blamed immigrants bringing diseased cattle with them for the rising price of beef. Bessent did say those words, so the quote is correctly attributed to him.

Experts had been concerned about screwworm for some time. The Wildlife Conservation Society warned about cattle smuggling as a major factor in the screwworm's return to North America on Nov. 1, 2024, weeks before the first confirmed case in Mexico.

However, contrary to Bessent's assertion, InSight Crime experts pointed to "criminal networks," not migrants fleeing their countries of origin, as being responsible for cattle smuggling.

As a result of screwworm in Mexico, the Department of Agriculture suspended the import of Mexican beef in May in an effort to stem the spread of the disease. Later, it also announced a plan to help Mexico fight screwworm.

However, experts said that the increase in beef prices was a result of tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on some of the top importing countries to the U.S.: Brazil, Uruguay, Australia and New Zealand. On Nov. 14, 2025, Trump told reporters he had cut tariffs on beef, coffee, tomatoes and other foods.

You can distort it all you want, but Bessent clearly stated that a) this disease had been introduced into Mexico from the South and b) therefore the border had to be closed for beef from Mexico. Yes, that put upward pressure on the price of beef products. Period.

President Donald Trump on Thursday accused several Democratic lawmakers of “seditious behavior,” calling for them to “be arrested and put on trial” for behavior that, he said, could be “punishable by death.”

The lawmakers, many of whom are veterans, had posted a video Tuesday telling military and intelligence officers to "refuse illegal orders."

“It’s called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL. Their words cannot be allowed to stand — We won’t have a Country anymore!!! An example MUST BE SET,” the president wrote in one Truth Social post Thursday morning.

Banning Mexican beef causes price increases. He didn't claim that to be the only reason.
