Just as I predicted.
Another idiotic prediction of yours:
So now that Covid is on the way out, we're left with the economic damage.
And how many (just Americans) have died of Covid since your last (idiotic) predictions???

The main point is they're living off of glacial rather than sea ice most of the time unlike the rest of the groups.  The whole argument from climate warming"experts" is that the loss of sea ice due to warming will eradicate polar bears.  They apparently made a false claim.

Nope, not apparently. Not false; another big Klein misunderstanding. 🤯

Another idiotic prediction...

Whenever I see any "as I predicted" or similar messages posted, it always seems a little sad and pitiful. I cringe a bit, because it's obvious that the pretext is no more than a set of props used to dress the stage for congratulating oneself in public.

I wouldn't say a predictor is a moron who constantly assumes and whose misunderstandings on so many topics never interfere with the predictor having strong opinions on those topics. Or that predictors' writings here appear to be a stream of consciousness without thought, logic, or critical thinking. Or that there are hundreds of pages that prove all of this to be true. While all true, I'd still never say that here. 😉

Seriously, I find it sad to witness insecurity to a degree that it creates a need for self-congratulation and praise.

And when the glaciers melt, we could make artificial ice for them.

Yup. Clearly the case here.

Self-praise is the first sign of insecurity.

This forum was full of self-congratulatory predictions from people who claimed that the polar bear is going extinct because of the loss of sea ice due to climate change.  It would be nice if some of them backed off their predictions and admitted that they may have been wrong, even if just a little.

What's interesting is that the articles say that these bears have been living under these atypical conditions for years.  Yet no claimant of bear extinction ever mentioned this important fact.  They'd rather perpetuate the erroneous belief that bears don't have the ability to adapt to ever-changing environmental conditions just to push the climate change narrative as being always negative.

I still have the time and patience to discuss honest disagreements. What I've decided to no longer waste time and energy with is responding to people that are habitually disingenuous or dishonest in either their remarks or their framing of them. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of people, with whom I discuss topics of disagreement, do not fall into the latter category.

In watching the January 6th congressional hearings, I'm reminded of the sickening disgust I felt watching the events of that day…

I feel the same way with the hearings but I'm so glad they are happening. Even though the usual suspects (in politics and even right here on LuLa) will chime in to try and deflect or minimize what happened …

I watched part of the hearings on the third day. To those who followed the political scene closely, both before and after the election, there was nothing surprising other than perhaps a fuller understanding of the role played by the much maligned Mike Pence.

I was struck though by a comment from one who observed that what was truly shocking anout the proceedings was not the ‘malfaisance’ (dare I say criminality) it highlighted, but the sheer apathy / disinterest showed by many, particularly the right.  I can’t say whether that remark is well founded; I suspect it is, if for no other reason that the same attitude can be observed on the other side of the Atlantic.

Perhaps ‘populism’ should be redefined as ‘see no evil, hear no evil just as long as it’s in my interest’.

It seems the polar bear has expanded from 19 to 20 groups around the world and the news of their demise due to climate change is more than slightly overblown.  Just as I predicted.

Oh fer crying out loud, Alan, you post an article that you didn't read (or didn't understand). The bear population has not EXPANDED, it's just that a new group of bears has been DISCOVERED. It was there all along. And polar bear population has in fact been increasing, but that's not because climate change isn't happening (gimme a break) but because they are very adaptable to new circumstances. This should be a cause for joy, but no excuse to ignore the droughts and floods and heat waves and blizzards that climate change is causing all over the world.

I watched part of the hearings on the third day. To those who followed the political scene closely, both before and after the election, there was nothing surprising other than perhaps a fuller understanding of the role played by the much maligned Mike Pence.

I was struck though by a comment from one who observed that what was truly shocking about the proceedings was not the ‘malfaisance’ (dare I say criminality) it highlighted, but the sheer apathy / disinterest showed by many, particularly the right.

The focus on the third day of public hearings was outlined and summarized well in this NPR article. It focused on evidence regarding the plotting by John Eastman, which was endorsed and enjoined by his co-conspirator Trump, to pressure Vice President Pence into unilaterally rejecting the constitutionally certified electors from multiple states in order to declare Trump re-elected as president. There were multiple scenarios offered by John Eastman for doing this, all of them clearly in violation of the Constitution and federal law.

The hearing covered: the specific acts Pence was being pressured to engage in and his multiple refusals; specific details of when, where, and how Pence was being pressured and by whom; and the potential criminal liability for Eastman and Trump. Cited during the hearing was the case brought by Eastman to withhold documents and the ruling by Federal Judge David O. Carter.

Judge Carter did block a small number of documents, but allowed most to be released to the committee. His 44-page ruling in the case is worth reading. I at least recommend reading pages 3 thru 11, which lays out the background facts regarding: 1) Election fraud claims, 2) Plan to disrupt electoral count, and 3) Attack on the Capitol in a very clear, methodical, and concise manner. There are then several pages of legal analysis regarding the documentary evidence that Eastman is trying to block.

Judge Carter's ruling becomes more interesting at page 30 where the discussion turns to the "Crime-fraud exception" to lawyer-client privilege. The ruling explains: The crime-fraud exception applies when (1) a “client consults an attorney for advice that will serve [them] in the commission of a fraud or crime,” and (2) the communications are “sufficiently related to” and were made “in furtherance of” the crime. It is irrelevant whether the attorney was aware of the illegal purpose or whether the scheme was ultimately successful.

He then analyzes "Potential crimes or fraud" which may have been committed. The first potential crime is "Obstruction of an official proceeding". Following this, "Conspiracy to defraud the United States" is also analyzed in some detail. "Common law fraud" is briefly discussed. These are followed by a section on "Actions in furtherance of crime or fraud".

Then we get to the final page (#44) "Section IV. Disposition":

Dr. Eastman and President Trump launched a campaign to overturn a democratic election, an action unprecedented in American history. Their campaign was not confined to the ivory tower—it was a coup in search of a legal theory. The plan spurred violent attacks on the seat of our nation’s government, led to the deaths of several law enforcement officers, and deepened public distrust in our political process.

More than a year after the attack on our Capitol, the public is still searching for accountability. This case cannot provide it. The Court is tasked only with deciding a dispute over a handful of emails. This is not a criminal prosecution; this is not even a civil liability suit. At most, this case is a warning about the dangers of “legal theories” gone wrong, the powerful abusing public platforms, and desperation to win at all costs. If Dr. Eastman and President Trump’s plan had worked, it would have permanently ended the peaceful transition of power, undermining American democracy and the Constitution. If the country does not commit to investigating and pursuing accountability for those responsible, the Court fears January 6 will repeat itself.

What we're seeing in these very well-done hearings (those watching, those who watch and read and understand) is that everyone around Trump, except those few who belong in the 'rubber room' knew what he was saying and doing was wrong. Wrong, illegal, without merit. He (Trump) knew he lost the election. He knew there was no voter fraud that would change the outcome. He knew how to enrage the crowd where he spoke before the insurrection. He made money from many of the same people that attended his speech before the insurrection. He knew Pence was in danger and didn't try to calm the crowd, but he also watched on TV in glee and sent even more tweets to rile them up.
It was a planned, step-by-step attempt, a coup.
One of the best 'lines' at the last hearing was the WH lawyer who told Eastman to get a good lawyer, he'd need one. Let's not forget Eastman asked for a pardon.

Zoologist, Economist, Virologist, Climatologist, legal scholar...

There are many graduates of Dunning–Kruger University populating the internet. They can often be seen online accusing "experts"; with many years of education, training, active research, and peer-reviewed publication, of making false claims and pushing phony narratives.

Alumni of the aforementioned school of thought frequently find evidence and findings from "experts" untrustworthy and often view expert consensus as more akin to political or financial conspiracy than to sound scientific reasoning or logic.

It's something of an affront and puzzle to them that others may give more weight to the opinion of "experts" and their years of investment in time and energy devoted to learning, rather than to their own immediate understanding acquired by gut instinct and confirmed by 15 minutes devoted to Google.

That's an accurate and concise summary of the evidence to date. Thanks. I suspect there's even more to come.

And on the LuLa forums, we have one Professor Emeritus of that University.  ;)
