One of the weird things about "socialism" is I don't think the people arguing about it on left and right knows what it means. In a socialist country, the government owns the means of production. You know, like GM, Exxon, Microsoft, Google, etc. Owns them. As in the USSR, China, North Korea. In AOC theory, socialism doesn't
haveto be totalitarian, as in the USSR, China, North Korea, but it doesn't seem to work otherwise. And, it most real socialist countries, it has usually proven expedient to get rid of a portion of the population that disagrees with the system. What most people seem to mean by socialism is actually "social democracy," in which many life-supporting activities are left to governments, like universal medical care, strong Social Security programs, good welfare and minimum wages, and so on. That requires higher taxes, which many people hate. I understand that, since I pay about 50% of my income in taxes now, and would be paying more than that if I lived in California and a few other states. But, a fair high tax rate doesn't mean many people can't be rich; just not as obscenely rich as they are now. Seems to work in Scandinavia, which actually seems to have quite a few rich people.
