Regarding his degree: degrees have very little bearing on bearing. I have seen a waiter in a simple local bar tell off a customer for doing that with his feet. It happened to me once early on in the career (the feet, not the award): we had a party at home and one of the guys put his feet up on a coffee table. He never came back. It's offensive, whether or not the person doing it knows.
