All I know that it is not allowed to photograph police officers or soldiers in Cuba. Since the proportion of women in these occupations is relatively low, it is safe to assume that they don't have many pretty officers there. Due to various circumstances, many pretty Cuban girls resorted to another, much more lucrative occupation.

I know; some years ago a British photographer (Paul Harvey) who did some BCal airline calendars went there to shoot a tit 'n' ass calendar for a UK steel company. The making-of video (shot by his wife, before making-of videos existed) was called The Cuban Nipple Crisis and was taken up and aired on tv, possibly the BBC - yes, just confirmed in the link:

https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/39265a486dc347bfb5a36e30a4cbce03

After the shoot with the usual imported-on-trip Brit models we all knew and loved, he went to a Cuban model agency and picked up a girl to do some fashion pictures; memory tells me we didn't get to see much of that work, but the girls in the agency looked lovely.

All that aside, if you can find it online somewhere (had a copy on video tape for years, until, it was unplayable, along with all the rest of the videos I had) because of being shot by his wife with all that access to the highs and lows, it is the closest thing to my own reality of such trips that I've seen. When high, it's great, but when it's low it drags you down to the depths of despair not just because of the possibility of losing a client, but of the opportunity of making great work being sabotaged in front of your very eyes, and you pretty much powerless to do anything about it.

Not much to do with Brexit either, but a testament to the resilience of some Brit snappers, that Dunkirk spirit, if you will!

That's a pretty common state of affairs, no?

(On a trip to Nigeria I encountered a stunningly beautiful girl in fatigues and carrying a large gun. It would have made an exceptional photo. Luckily my sense of self-preservation kicked in for once!) )

Of course prostitution was unheard of during the good old Batista days!!

Quote
One week after seizing power, Fidel Castro said: “Weapons for what? to fight against whom? against the Revolutionary Government, which has the support of all the people?”. The audience present answered: “No!”

Officers, soldiers and revolutionary groups handed over their weapons. Later, many of them were executed or imprisoned.

Hmm ... so what did they use to repel the Bay of Pigs invaders? The power of love?

1.  (On a trip to Nigeria I encountered a stunningly beautiful girl in fatigues and carrying a large gun. It would have made an exceptional photo. Luckily my sense of self-preservation kicked in for once!) )

2.  Of course prostitution was unheard of during the good old Batista days!

1. Perhaps you could have asked her? Probably spoke English.

2. Perhaps it was better-paid in those days?

I often wonder at the sobriquet "sex worker"; smells of western hypocrisy and the general inability to call a spade a spade; as if, somehow, it sweetened the pill of reality.

How can anyone defend the brutal Castro.  Maduro's not much better.  Where are private Venezuelan guns?

Nobody is doing. However, if you wish to attack him, please do so on the basis of facts, and don't just make stuff up - it makes you look like a bit of a fanatic.

Perhaps, but experience suggests that the less contact with military-looking people in Nigeria the better.

On the second day after he took power, Castro sent his soldiers around the country.  They confiscated weapons using the ownership lists created by his predecessor that he overthrew, Batista.  The first guns he confiscated were from rival revolutionary groups who weren't Communist like him.  So he eliminated his immediate rivals first followed by any other citizens who might be thinking of overthrowing him.  60 years later, the Castro dictators are still in charge.  The Cuban people still aren't free.  That's the truth. I'm not a fanatic.

As someone else stated, no one has defended Castro. Stop trolling.

Come to that, I think we need an equivalent of Godwin's law for socialist-baiting. It seems as if it's impossible to criticize some aspects of modern commerce without invoking the extreme reaction of being Stalin's fellow travellers. It has surfaced from time to time in these pages and it's silly. (If I remember right, one regular commentator in this section referred to California's Stalinist Economy, presumably an overreaction to the state's support of the Democratic party. Calling California, of all places, a hotbed of socialism boggles the mind.)

Your fascination with an armed citizenry seems over the top to me. The idea that we need to arm ourselves to protect ourselves from the government is a little out of time. But just to prolong the discussion, were you ok with the Black Panthers arming themselves and calling themselves a militia to protect civil rights marchers? Because, if memory serves (and it's kind of vague, I'll admit), I think they were arrested for behaving pretty much the way those militia were behaving in Charlottesville a year or two back.

The US Constitution is a model document, no question. But it didn't prevent slavery or the genocide of indigenous peoples, and the 14th amendment did not prevent Jim Crow. Nor has it done much about the attacks on habeas corpus in modern times. As a backdrop to legislation, it is an important document, but it might be better to regard it as a working document, like any other, rather than attach quasi-religious reverence to it, because it hasn't always helped the people who needed protection the most.

The Constitution isn't perfect.  But it's kept Americans free or made them free for over two hundred years.  That's not bad.  What's come in second?

Correct and ironically, it sparked a movement towards gun control as people wanted weapons taken away from the Panthers.

Everyone can have weapons as long as they're legally kept and used.  I don't own any myself.  My wife would have a fit.

Actually, it is second.

What comes in first place is the Magna Carta, which predates it by eons.

You really should try do as most Europeans do; remove the rose tinteds once in a while and recognize the massive imperfections that surround us all.

Your system sucks every bit as much as any other in the first world. Accept it and relax: you don't face Brexit; your own nightmares have come to visit already.

That was a distribution of power among the 1%-ers.

Heard of the concept of revisionism?

It was the best thing since sliced venison!

I can see why it might fit in a thread about Artists' Statements, but into one on Brexit?

If you refer to the irony of the name of the competition and the pollution of the train, yes, indeed.

But hey, that's the world of the amateur photographer; what did you expect?

Thank God there is still belief in the freedom of speech in Britain:

"Boris Johnson, favorite to be Britain's next PM, wins court challenge over alleged Brexit lies"

Unfortunately, that's just as worthy as the Trump case where he was kinda, sorta, but not absolutely cleared of guilt...

That people in public office are now allowed to lie, openly and without - it would seem - running the risk of being held responsible for barefaced lies, is frightening indeed, and it's surprising that Slobodan would appear to be lauding such behaviour as a freedom of speech issue. Oh well, live and learn; perhaps it's the Floridian humidity to blame. It's the kindest explanation I can come up with in the circumstances. To me, it's the sort of political whitewashing one might expect to hear about in China or Russia.
