Looks like pig happiness is more important to Brits than farmers' happiness. Besides, all done already without the U.S. (emphasis mine):

Are you proposing that farmers' wives should be kept in crates or that farmers be fed hormones that make them sick?

(FYI gestation crates are now banned across the EU so British farmers can compete on a level playing field)

More likely, because they voted for Chavez and Maduro. Self-inflicted damage.

But it was taking away the people's guns that left them stuck with these dictators.

The whole American constitution was written to limit government power and the 2nd amendment was to give the people a chance to fight back if the government become dictatorial in spite of the constitution limiting their power.  Because of no guns, the Venezuelans might become like the Cubans.  Generations could be lost to obscene government power.

I'm skeptical about the benefit of guns in this case. With communists shooting at the anti-communists it could get even worse.

Suggestive emphasis, due to selective quoting. UK pork exports have been increasing since 2010!!!

But the UK is a net importer (because they use lots of pork products). Because of European tariffs, there is not much meat coming from outside the EU:
https://britishmeatindustry.org/industry/imports-exports/pigmeat/

This will all change after Brexit. Imports will become more expensive, unless one imports meat containing banned growth promoters, from pigs kept in conditions banned in UK.

Time to switch to Tofu.

“Public opinion swings behind a hard No Deal Brexit”

Beware of facile analysis, Slobodan, and be doubly cautious about believing anything you ever read in the Daily Mail, even (or perhaps especially) if you are guided there by Apple News.

Analysis of the local election results last month was used to support both Leave and Remain; and the same has been done with analysis of the European elections more recently.

Opinion polls are worse: all depends on the question you ask and the way in which you ask it. It's amusingly demonstrated here.

Jeremy' chips wra

I'd extend that caution to pretty much all the red tops: they write downwards, fantasize, and hope to sell in large numbers to that demographic; tomorrow's fish 'n' chips wrappers, then, that purpose being the one of greater worth. If disposed of responsibly, that is.

That said, I have almost as little faith in the better newspapers that also have a constituency to service.

Some evenings, when I thrill myself with the second dose of the day's eye drops, I switch on Sky News hoping to get some inkling of the day's events, and then, to my horror, realise it's not the news, but The Pledge! With eyes closed for the next ten, I'm not about to grope my way to where I may have left the tv remote, so I have little option but to hear them shout at one another like LuLa on a bad day. What a bunch of wankers! Yet, it appears they are very popular, which is rather alarming, in its way.

A part of me hopes that is correct. I am relatively secure as are the people I care about. My daughter has the right to a second passport so she can escape. And when the Brexiters find themselves on the unemployment line I will not be shedding any tears. Of course there will be innocent victims and those are the ones I am sorry for.

Brexit and Boris may not happen after all: today, in London, the ever diplomatic Mr Trump stuck his nose into the pie and declared he was in favour of both! Going on past record...

But Melania continues to shine! Once a model...

What's with all the ... Rob?

Fair enough, Jeremy, no dispute from me about the value of polls. Here in the States, it is known as the Bradley effect.. Though your example is indisputably more entertaining.

Castro overthrew Batista the former dictator with guns.  First thing Castro did when he took power was get rid of private guns.  He knew!

Not true. Rather the opposite - he armed the population in order to defend the revolution against the US.

Not true. Rather the opposite - he armed the population in order to defend the revolution against the US.

And it's already fully armed to protect itself from itself. Beautiful symmetry.

Like the atom bomb: we have it to threaten the other kids with it but dare not use it because all the other kids that have it will use it, and beautiful destruction will resolve the problems of mankind.

So we threaten the other kids that don't have it and trade them off between ourselves and the other haves. Are we the mothers of invention or just a bunch of mothers? Or both?

A quick googling proves the opposite:

Quote
once the crisis was over, Fidel ordered the disarmament of the militias. Since then, only government forces could have weapons.

Weapons for the Government, not for the people

We consulted with Rebeca Esther Ulloa Sarmiento, Cuban journalist and researcher, co-author of “Fidel Castro, the last dinosaur” and other political books, about what happens when a government takes away from its citizens the ability to defend themselves and how this process is experienced by exiles in the United States.

Ulloa says that Castro convinced the people that armament was not necessary. One week after seizing power, Fidel Castro said: “Weapons for what? to fight against whom? against the Revolutionary Government, which has the support of all the people?”. The audience present answered: “No!”

Officers, soldiers and revolutionary groups handed over their weapons. Later, many of them were executed or imprisoned.

I thought the truth is so obvious that it didn’t require a specific attribution.

This has nothing to do with Brexit.

I don't think Cuba ever did, but there's a good chance we imported added-chemicals-fee sugar cane from there, or even rum (the great, orginal rum deal?), but we probably had all the cane we needed back in India, just in case. The cigars we could have done without.

A boringly obvious truism: the more you do to hurt a little guy the more he will hate you and figure ways to put tiny, sharp stones in your shoe.

All I know that it is not allowed to photograph police officers or soldiers in Cuba. Since the proportion of women in these occupations is relatively low, it is safe to assume that they don't have many pretty officers there. Due to various circumstances, many pretty Cuban girls resorted to another, much more lucrative occupation.
