The problem with wearing those head things etc. is touched upon perfectly in your reference to hoodies. I kinda remember some police forces in the UK tryng to get those outfits banned; did they succeed?

It really has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with today's world of terrorism. Hiding facial recognition features makes for perfect disguise. Covering everything even makes it possible for males to pretend to be women; known terrorists have used that to escape from under the noses of guards.

It's sad and unfortunate, but clothes that once would have inspired nothing but benign interest today offer the threat of hidden suicide vests, bombs and machine guns. You cannot permit that to exist where there is a way of preventing it, though I'm sure there are those who will loudly proclaim the freedom to wear radical clothes that hide deadly tools is a right, just as guns don't kill anyone, people do. Pure bloody literalist thinkers with blind spots as big as themselves.

Were it not so serious, it's the same funny logic as displayed by those who protest that folks with eastern looks get searched more often at airports etc. than whites: last I heard few of the latter were in the political/religious suicide business! Of course the other lot gets searched more often - isn't it obvious why?

For a while during our first years in Spain I did a lot of regular flying back and forth to the UK. On one flight back my teenage son accompanied me. We both wore jeans and I had a beard. We were stopped at customs. I smiled and asked the customs officer if the twin jeans had anything to do with it. He smiled back, but not without making us empty our cases. I had no problem with that. Look the part expect the consequences, and believe me, the more mules they stop the better.

PS,  There were a bunch of Muslims in the audience including women with hijabs including Palestinians, Afghans, Pakistanis, Lebanese, etc who were getting in on the fun but mostly plain old white, non-Muslim people like me who laughed it up and thought he was great.

I looked at the first part of it, and found it loud and obnoxious. Definitely not the subtle British humour. The comedian must have been born in America.
Actually, I find Donald Trump much funnier.

Wearing head garb and religious artifacts are not banned in America.  It would be a violation of our constitutional right of free speech.  Certain professions may have restrictions due to the interference such garb may have.  But otherwise it's allowed.  Why would anyone think it's safer regarding terrorist.  If they weren't wearing a beard or certain Muslim gard, it would be easier for them to be anonymous when carrying a bomb.  Frankly, America is less paranoid and prejudiced about these things than Canada, Australia and Europe.

Actually Tump can be very sardonically funny.  Of course, the press who hates him, turns his every statement into something literal as if they don;t really understand where he's going with it.  They play dumb and then accuse him of some horrible thoughts.  They refuse to get the jokes.

He did not.

That is, plain and simple, a lie, tired trope by now, and pigheaded partisan nonsense. Deliberate distortion. Strawman.

You, of all people, who constantly plead for open-minded discussion should know that.

And he didn't toss paper towels at people either. Ok, ok, uncle, you win. :)

Would you prefer that he was tossing gallon-sized bottles of water? Besides, what that has to do with the lie you were telling?

“Uncle”? Is that a new type of personal insult?

No, it's a kid's thing. When you're trying to get another kid to give up, you order him/her to say "uncle", as a sign of submission. I am giving up, you win.

Ah, ok... now that you mentioned that angle, I remember it. I heard it only a couple of times in my life, in movies or tv probably. I thought you were making a reference to the proverbial "creepy uncle." :)

We used that when I grew up in The Bronx in the 1950's.  You'd have the guy in a headlock increasing the pressure and  pain until he said, "Uncle".  One of those stupid games you'd play when you're a kid.  Where did you grow up?

"They're sending people that have a lot of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

Even western experts at Google and elsewhere admit that Chinese tech companies now lead the world in these computer-vision technologies, due to the way the state funds Chinese companies to collect, use and report on the personal data of hundreds of millions of users across China.

Quite interesting article. Would make a good script for a sci-fi movie.

J. you can take any concept to extremes, and many people do: it's why they blow people up along with themselves. Now, if they were brighter, just went out into the park and then proceeded to blow themselves up when alone, that would be a vast improvement in social awarness, don't you think?

As for home-grown hoodies, the problem will solve itself with climate change: it'll just be too damned hot for those people to wear those silly, dangerous things that leave them liable to get run over stepping onto the street. Mind you...

UK slides slowly into an industrial crisis. The industrial output is the lowest in 6 years. The outlook for the other EU countries is also worsening.

The IHS Markit/CIPS UK Manufacturing PMI fell to 48.0 in June 2019 from 49.4 in the previous month and well below market expectations of 49.2. The latest reading pointed to the steepest contraction in the manufacturing sector since February 2013/

So who's it going to be for PM and does it make any difference? What are the chances the EU will renegotiate?

It may make a difference, but the trouble is that nobody can trust anybody to do as they promise. At this stage, it's all about climbing the Tory totem pole; anything else hardly matters to them. At least they still have the remnants of a pole.

Why should Europe reopen negotiations? The only bits the Brits want to negotiate are the ones impossible to negotiate without tumbling down the structure for what it was erected to accomplish: the point of being within such a union, i.e. good membership commercial deals and painless cooperation within said group. As with any club, you don't join and pay your subscription if outsiders get the same facilities for nothing, do you?

That size matters has never been more obvious, yet there goes Boris, saying it doesn't matter if Scotland and Northern Ireland go walkies. In a world of increasing redefinings of international power, it's the last time to choose to be a minnow.

What would happen if there is no Brexit deal with the EU?  After all, most countries in the world are not part of the EU.  Yet they successfully trade with them.  How would Britain be any different?
