Color calibration issue with new MacBook Pro 2018
« on: August 16, 2018, 04:41:14 am »

Dear friends,
I have a really odd issue with color calibration of two new MacBook Pro 2018 with the same configuration:

- 15" display
- Radeon Pro 560X + Intel UHD Graphics 630
- macOS 10.13.6

I started to calibrate the first one with X-Rite i1Display and i1Profiler.
As soon as the profile is created and loaded, I get strange azure artifacts that replace the black colors displayed on my screen, both images and text.
It's so strange as if I take a screenshot and I post here, you'll see everything ok, so I had to make a video that you can check here:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1yvrS0ZdQRTWTfFHEIoFOnZFsAn9Bbl3e

The super strange thing is that the problem persists only if you close the calibration app. If you leave it open, everything is fine.
Obviously I thought that the issue was related to X-Rite, but then I decided to calibrate the second MacBook Pro using Spyder 4 Elite, so another brand with another software and another calibration probe.

The result is the same, azure artifacts with the created profile (but this time even with the calibration app open).

Does anybody experience the same issue? Any idea?

Thank you!

V4 or V2 profiles?
Try resetting the SMC

reset SMC on most modern Mac laptops:
1. Shutdown your MacBook Air / MacBook Pro
2.  Connect the power adapter to your Mac
3. On the MacBook/Pro’s keyboard, hold down the Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time
4. Release all keys and the power button at the same time
5.  Boot your Mac as usual

Hello Andrew,
Thanks for the reply.

I used V4 profile (standard, not IccMax compatible).
SMC reset doesn't work unfortunately..as soon as the Mac load the ICC, the issue is back  :(

Make V2. Any difference? No reason for V4 anyway.

I'll try with V2, thanks.
Always considered only V4 due to this article: http://www.color.org/whyusev4.xalter
And never understood why V3 is missing  ;D

I'll let you know with V2, thank you.

I just went through a SMC reset for by MBP as guided by an Apple Support Tech. She said to hold the keys Andrew mentioned, Shift, Control, Option, and power on button for ten seconds before releasing. MAYBE that will make a difference.

Dear friends,
apparently is a macOS bug.

Hoping that this will turn useful to other MBP2018 photographers, I found a solution: just disable the automatic brightness control.

Best,

Best,
Perhaps with the new hardware but not on my 2016 MBP with the latest OS. And you NEVER want auto brightness or anything like it on. Invalidates the entire process.

Yes, I think is still related only to the new MacBooks Pro 2018

It's on my want list so I'd love to know how this all pans out. 99% of the time, my MPB MBP (MacBook Pro) is hooked up to a SpectraView but still....

MPB? You got to be kidding! Remember when I used AWB instead of ABW?
So, how does that feel, Andrew?

Like the troll is back, that's how it feels Francis.
You of course you never found anyone to believe or confirm your nonsense about that NEC 'issue' you made up. Telling.  :o

Francis? Man, you're losing it!
He was/(is) the talking mule...
He doesn't know how to read a nozzle check and as we've seen, has no data to help the OP here as evidence of every post made here today.

As you're again trolling (about AWB among other items), you've got more folks to ping in your resident job  ;)

Dear Frans and Andrew,

Please behave and cease the bickering - or your Grade 1 teacher will make you both stand in the corner for a week.

I agree and as you can see, my post history here was an attempt to aid the OP until....

Sounds good to me. Let's see if the personal attacks and ridicule end.

Try making a Matrix rather than LUT based profile; any difference?
