At 1:1 (100%) with the same surround, using the Develop module in Lightroom Classic the two should match exactly. They use the same preview color management.

I only use an old version of Photoshop - CS2 - the alternative being an equally old Nikon programme in which I do (did? have only used the iPhone for this past couple of years) initial conversions from NEFs to Tiffs.

That said, I have come to the conclusion that my stuff looks best on my little iPad. I wonder why? Maybe because at that point of viewing, on that device, I know that there’s nothing more I can do about it, unless I go back to Photoshop and futz about some more. I have concluded that one has to trust one’s gut and just know when enough is enough. Basically, that’s why I dislike those spaces where critics, in their own minds and of their own creation, decide to tell other photographers what to do to “improve” their pictures. Friggin’ arrogance and a monumental mutual waste of time and good relationships.

Why do you use two systems anyway? Does Lightroom offer something that’s initially better than can be found with Photoshop? I’m not trying to be a smart ass here; I simply haven’t used Lightroom to know for myself.

My workflow always starts in Lightroom and ends with an exported tif-file 16 bit prophoto.
This tif gets some work in Photoshop.
Somehow the color and rendering always looks better in photoshop.
So in Lightroom I think well this is the best i can get here in Lightroom, knowing it will look better in Photoshop, and it does.

Is that real or am I imagining things?

The problem with AI, though, is far deeper than just its effect on professional snappers: I have simply stopped believing anything that I see on the Internet. That, across the world, cannot be good for anybody, product advertisers included.

The best bet, of course, is a return to sanity, with real shops able to stay in business without being taxed to death by town councils and the greed of property owners.

Do people remember when you could walk into a camera store and see a reasonable range of new bodies and lenses? But even then, the stupidity of manufacturers/distributors began to rot the system. I remember the day I went into my Hasselblad dealer looking for something, and he told me he had had to drop the line, because he couldn't compete in a system where the big shops were able to sell at prices lower than he, as a small dealership, had to pay in order to get stock. For pity's sake, didn't Hassy understand that it was cutting its own throat doing that? If the big city shops could sell more units than the small ones, fine; it doesn't mean that they should get the product for less outlay than the guy in the sticks. Those units were always going to be sold - if you really wanted a 'blad you didn't settle for a Bronica. Crazy. And guess what? No AI involved - just greed and bad marketing philosophy.

It is the same step change that phone cameras brought to the field. Good enough for ordinary folks in their daily life. There will always be the 10 % that need more handles/controls and have the technique skills to successfully market their labour.

I wish I could draw and paint better.

Yet, despite myself, I’m still interested in what the iPhone 18 Pro might offer me that would make me pull the trigger, where the 17 ultimately failed to convince.

The thing hanging on the right is an old bed-warming pan. It’s basically a brass box, a couple of inches deep, fitted with a decorated hinged lid and a long handle. They used to be filled with ashes and the glowing remains of heating fires, and then slid between the sheets in baronial bedrooms to keep master and mistress warm of a night. There was no home insurance back then, so you could do those things. Nowadays, the problem is Shakespearean: to polish or not to polish, that is the question.

If you can find a copy, I recommend reading Forever Amber. It was clearly jealousy that led to the anti-Royalist fever of the Charles 1 and Charles II century. No way somebody was gonna have a good time unless everybody else was gonna enjoy it too! Plus ça change plus c’est la même chose… ;-)
