Title: Daidochromes (iPhone)
Post by: Rob C on September 05, 2024, 06:25:12 am
Not sure whether it's possible to categorise any of what may or may not follow (from me) as street, but let's just say the frames are shot in the great outdoors, have nothing - spìritually speaking - to do with rocks, trees, rivers nor, for that matter, the great American West.

As a matter of interest, do Ivo and Stamper live here any longer?

I haven't seen Stamper in a long time.

Thanks, francois. We used to argue, but more importantly I liked much of his work. I hope he is okay, just AWOL.

A far cry from the sweet smells and feel of the darkroom, where even the same music reverberated through my head differently. Which could take us into the fight between vinyl, cassette and digital, but not today.

Oh well, no need to stock different grades of WSG anymore. I can feel Kodak's pain.

Funny creatures, those little things. This one - or at least its fellow tribal members - seems to have taken a liking to the table on my terrace, where I eat. They jump incredible jumps. They also give me unwanted worries: I stack the chairs at night to prevent the wildlife - usually feral cats - from using the seats as safe houses or hidden command posts from which to spot the early birds or, possibly, on which to make noisy cat love when that time is due. As the spiders also like to spend time on the frames of the chairs, I try to avoid making them the meat in a leg sandwich as I stack them. I don’t even like spiders. We used to have lots of large ones that would come up from the gardens at night, but as we had a sprinkler system installed some years ago, the water seems to have discouraged them. A nice, unexpected bonus.

Well done again Rob.

Ivo! Great to see you’re still alive and kicking - I obviously hadn’t forgotten about your photographic talents! There was another guy from Holland whose name I can’t find; I remember he liked one of my shots called The Driver…

All we need is for Stamper to kick in too…we might be able to give this old show a shot of love potion number 9.

Yes Chris, iPhone13 Mini. The original is a large poster (colour), and I took the ‘phone in as close as I could see without reverting to putting on my reading specs. A little messing about in Photoshop, adding quite a bit of contrast, burning in the outline to the edges of the lips, some noise, and voila.

Thanks for the compliment!

Big ones demand respect and no, absolutely no uninvited toying.

I do wish it were possible to have an interview, in English, with a bitch of the same ilk. Guess that will remain beyond the powers even of Mr Musk, name notwithstanding.

As they say, there are often more questions than answers. One of the tragedies of my life is that I have always suffered from a surfeit of answers to which there were seldom questions. It was very easy to diagnose in my stock photography portfolio. ;-(

Something kinda wonderful historical in this little game of juxtapositions.

I find myself wondering about the old folks from a century or two ago who lived out their lives in this little Port of Pollença; I know it from 1966, and resent the many changes to its character. Even the forty-three years of tenure of my tiny territory has seen more change than I like. Were this my first visit here, I'd never have even dreamed of settling down for life. In the interest of full disclosure, however, the decision was highly work-based: the beaches, the mountains and the rural areas were fantastic locations for model photography. The exchange rate, pounds sterling to pesetas, meant a wonderful style of living. History, I'm afraid.

Planning approval granted? Or, more likely a back-hander given? Doesn't look like there was an architect involved in any meaningful way.

That's partly why there are protests against “massification” in the tourism industry. Everything gets run over in the scramble for the tourist buck, and some of the very people in power are the ones with the money and the opportunity to create the rooms for the tourists. Who controls the people who control the controls?

An interesting thing has happened in the boat scene: those people who owned boats under seven metres in length are the segment of the water brotherhood now trying to sell off. They have been priced out. Exactly the same holds with property: those folks of modest means who could once wed and go into a place of their own, now live frustrated single lives with their parents, because renting is out of the question, never mind the fantasy of buying. Foreign cash has ruined local aspiration. Just like with the better parts of Britain, then.

Thanks, degrub, the iPhone becomes ever more a tool of choice.

Sure, a super-duper, full-frame, mega-pixies machine would be nice to own, but in reality, would I carry it with me every day? I’m not sure that I would have the nerve to risk another mugging which, in such a case, would almost feel by invitation. As with so many things in an ordinary life, there are both suitable and unsuitable times for everything. I suppose that if wealthy enough, a couple of bodyguards would solve those little problems.

Let’s not even think about the pointlessness, now, of models. ;-)

Thank you; lot’s of innocent fun changing and taking a presumably expensive advertising shot into a different playground.

I wish I’d kept most of my own old negatives… it would have let me do “street” from the quiet of my little office. In my own defence, though, no Internet was known (by me) to exist, back in 1981.

As a bit if useless information: yesterday marked the day, 44 years ago, when my tribe and I arrived in Mallorca to start a new life. It also means that I have spent more of my life here than anywhere else. Hey ho. The year before, having had a hellish experience with X-ray, film bags and police at the entrance to the departure lounge of Palma airport, I swore I’d never set foot on this island again. How did Kodachrome 64 Pro react to X-ray machines? Well, some of the films showed skin tones that had turned from tan into khaki. Fortunately, enough stuff survived to enable the gig to succeed.

Which, in a way, is exactly what I was doing.

Trouble is, a week ten years ago used to be much longer than a week this year.

I'm not sure who's to blame for that, probably the government. We are being robbed of time with few of us really realising it; just wait until they put a tax on it and charge us for using too much at once - then everybody (almost - some blinded loyalists will always remain in the Coffee Corner) will see what's going down.

I doubt it - the problem is another sort of leak: overhead drainage - maybe part of cooling systems - pipes, despite frequent repairs, constantly make some parking slots no-go areas because of whatever chemicals that run through them. If they get your paintwork, bird shit pales into insignificance.

Good commentary on the real estate market !

You can say that again!

Funny thing: last night’s tv news claimed record visitor figures for Spain, the Brits ahead of the Germans, whereas the press writes the opposite, that the people are staying away. Seems that the restaurants are the worst hit businesses, which doesn’t surprise me. Prices have rocketed, and I expect a meltdown’s on the way, particularly because those migrant workers who do the waiter jobs can’t afford to pay for accommodation anymore. No staff, no service, no clients. I’m told that local owners rather leave apartments unoccupied than drop them to affordable rent levels. Saw a clip from Ibiza of waiters unable to afford rents living in tents and cars.

The government has stepped in, if rather late in the day, to force airb’n’b types of property letters to display an official certificate with their advertising showing they have legal permission to let out. It’s been a nightmare in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, for properties on the market are being snapped up by investment octopuses for tourism, depriving normal citizens from being able to compete and buy or rent for themselves and their families. Unsustainable. I think a lot of the anti-tourist marches have been measures of desperation, but those marchers have picked the wrong targets: don’t blame the folks who book what’s been offered. Likewise, don’t blame the tourists for the road chaos, with roads jammed to a halt. Blame, instead, the unregulated car-hire market that floods everything in sight. Snag is, local government as with national, so many individuals in positions to help solve these problems are themselves coining it in from the very things causing said problems.

Didn’t see your post - sorry ‘bout that!

Warnings are all over the place due to the summer heat; so many dying in Spain because of it. They tell us that the old don’t realise they are thirsty, and dehydration comes in… I try to judge by the colour of my pee, ‘cept there ain’t much of it in the heat. Oh well, do one’s best.

degrub and francois - thanks; yes, that tender has known a sweeter time. Yesterday’s local paper showed a 28metre yacht in flames… seems to happen quite a lot. Maybe the used boat market has gone sour. For sure, there has been a lot of publicity recently about the effect of inflation on boat ownership, with the boats under about 7m being hardest hit. Moorings have become outrageously expensive and, as ever, the shallower pockets can't find the resources. Guys with deeper pockets don’t have any interest in smaller craft - entirely different uses for them. Space is one huge problem, with the local club having a waiting list stretching out for years. God alone knows the cost of a mooring when the chance to get one finally comes around.

Some boat owners have their cars decorated with “Tender to xyz” stickers; I thought of sticking one on mine, reading “Tender to Tumescent; it’s an age thing” but thought better of it.

Funny thing: though I see these multi-million dollar boats every day, the desire for the unattainable (for me) has finally gone. This could well have a lot to do with my actinic keratosis - which demands very strong sun blocking cream in sunshine, so going out to sea and all that fierce radiation bouncing off the water in every direction has become dangerous - or simply the personal experience of sailing with good friends who had such vessels, but the cold reality seems to be that actual time out and about is relatively very brief, but the maintenance bills constant. User satisfaction with boats appears to be ever more closely related to camera satisfaction… instead of pixels the lure is to be found in meters of length and magical horsepower/torque combinations. Whoda thunk relative poverty could bring peace of mind! ;-)

Keith, degrub: thanks for the kind remarks!

There is a problem with the Daidochrome visual ethic, though: one of my granddaughters was with me when I took the shot, and I realised that sending a copy of it to her, as processed for the website, could easily give anyone not familiar with the style the idea that wow, this photographer can’t process!

Maybe that’s why it took me quite a while to get to understand Moriyama; it was only continued curiosity and many repeat visits to flip-through book sites that go me to come to grips with the oeuvre. Definitely a cult personality and image that surrounds him and his photography - one massive and prolific bubble!

Big personality filling the room?

Mediterranean diet keeps them reasonable here - unless it’s to do with eyes and skin. My eyes have been playing games these past three or four weeks: hardening of the lids, constant flow of tears or of something else. The first week I was on antibiotics, with no results; the doc then tried antihistamines for the next week, and that proved just as useless. She then put me on something else, and told me that if it didn’t solve the problem, I should go straight to the eye folks at the local hospital. Well, the hardness has gone, as has the very red inner lining of the lids, but a little secretion remains. I’ll give it another day, and if everything isn’t normal then yes, hospital here I come. I also have a blurring again that makes Photoshopping useless: I can no longer tell what’s sharp and what’s not. Fun…

Thanks, Chris; despite now having developed a resigned kind of nature, neither a positive nor a negative one, I find it virtually impossible to enjoy working with snaps unless I go as “noir” as I can take ‘em - without losing sight of what the thing actually is. It’s that Japanese gentleman: he’s under my skin!

Thanks again -

Your focus is sharper—again, both figuratively and literally.

(Nothing against Moriyama.  I know his work was groundbreaking in its day and I think some of it has worn well over time.  But like most disruptive artists, he was pushing against the boundaries of what worked, and inevitably sometimes beyond them.)
Title: Re: Daidochromes (iPhone)
Post by: Rob C on September 05, 2025, 04:03:12 pm
In the literal sense, yes, sharper, but perhaps that’s partly due to the iPhone I’m using.

I suspect that if I attempted the same stuff using my D200, it would look a bit less crisp; that’s probably something I have discovered using my old manual Nikkors: maybe they don’t calibrate accurately with the viewfinder screen. Having said that, if I am actually missing focus with them, it might be because with my analogue Nikons I had the great advantage of a split-image screen in the pentaprism. Checking a silly little focus light isn’t a brilliant technique, and very distracting. Frankly, having made use of it on tripod-based shots, it’s disconcerting to see just how vague an aid that light actually is in practice. I think I remember everything being better on the D700, but that’s now a lost cause. I loved that camera. ;-(

However, it’s really been the iPhone that’s got me back snapping; I had pretty much given up carting a heavy, dedicated camera with me when I went out of the house.

Snow in Mallorca?

Usually, every winter up in the mountains. Highest point is Puig Mayor, at 1,440 metres. The USA used to control two huge radar domes up on top. Now there is one. However, when I was sixteen I lived in Scotland.

Mallorca, as a permanent residence, came when I was forty-four; I suppose, in retrospect, it was a kind of shared mid-life crisis that my wife and I took as a prompt.

Life was so much more civilised then: on our first flight as one-way tourists, we brought our own crystal glasses, chicken sandwiches, and bought those tiny bottles of airline white wine. So much more cool than standard onboard fare. Today, that crystal probably wouldn’t make it through security. Yeah, them wuz the days, all right.

There has been lots of “calima”, which is what the folks on the Spanish news service call the Saharan dust that often blows up northwards to us. It reminds me of a lighter version of the choking shit that filled British cities during the 50s and earlier. Fortunately, the death of much heavy engineering and steel production put an end to it.

We used to have a very good tram system in Glasgow, networking across the city and into the various suburbs. Sometimes, if caught out by that fog when in the city, visibility really down to about ten feet, I could find my way home in the car because I remembered where the various tramlines branched off into different routes. Lost sentinels…

I don’t remember seeing much honest to goodness sea fog, though, it is a rare phenomenon here. The most impressive fog I remember was once when my wife and I were driving to Scotland: we came out of Andorra and there, below us over France, was this sea of fog or cloud beneath the mountains. It was like flying in the Ford… Beautiful sight.

Thank you, Chris; marketing bs at its sweetest and, probably, justification for a good time.

Were it not for a dislike of drinking alone once a day (I can only handle lunch - eating later brings on acid reflux and the threat of self-suffocation in my sleep - what irony that would be), I would most enjoy sitting on the verandah at around half-past eleven on a sunny morn, nursing a soothing G&T with a little fried goat’s cheese enhancing a Jacob’s cracker or two. As things stand, even a glass of wine now hits my head almost directly, and driving the car would be quite irresponsible. How I miss both wife and youthfulness. Oh well, it was a wonderful life, and nothing can take away what was.

Regarding the snaps: without a cellphone, hardly any new pics would exist on my hard drive. I keep readying both self, Nikon, lens and battery for some photography “tomorrow” but, come the dawning, it all seems like way too much trouble…

A gifted Q with 27mm might throw the psychological switch, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I suppose that then, I just be nervous about getting mugged again. ;-)

Thanks, Keith. I think I’ve definitely decided to hang on to the 13 Mini iPhone when the ordered 17 Pro finally arrives. The sensible reason being, that in case of theft of the new one, at least I won’t end up paying for two phones and only have one. I’ll try not to repeat the mistake I made with the Nikons, when I eventually left the D700 at home, for “special” shooting that never came, and did everything on the old D200 instead. If I had used the new camera more, its jammed mirror fault might have happened when still under warrantee, or at least while Nikon still supplied parts for it. Live and learn.

That's a good question to which I don't have a definitive answer!

I thought that I did when my Rolex was pinched, but as I have mentioned before, the insurance company simply refused to reply to any of my letters, and the local agent got no further with them than getting me a claims form. I sometimes wonder whether he didn't want to get any further... I am no longer with that company, the new one being offered by the bank. I have to go there this week, and will ask. The telephone company offers a policy, but it's quite expensive and hardly seems worth it.

P.S.

I've just looked at the current policy, and it clearly says that there is no cover for anything outwith the home. ;-(

That’s a perfectly logical combination. Clearly, the girls and their ladders worked as a team: if the punter couldn’t hack the ladder, then far too dangerous for any physical exertions!

I got to Corfu for a weekend that was supposed to be two weeks. The model got ill almost on arrival, and we had to return to London and then I had to get to Glasgow. The client was less than thrilled - but we got a new girl and went to Mallorca instead. I felt obliged to go 6x6 instead of Kodachrome just because Ektachrome could be processed locally and save time.

Did you like Corfu? In the brief time I was there I felt kinda relieved that things had gone as they had; the bits I actually saw hadn’t filled me with great confidence over my decision to go there in the first place. The Internet, had it existed in those days, would have been very helpful regarding location spotting. That said, take away the need for sandy beaches, and I think a pretty nice holiday could be spent there.

The Northeast of Corfu was known as Kensington-on-Sea, incredibly monied, birds and yachts galore. More account execs and art directors than you could shake a stick at. Hence it was also my agent's hangout. Nuff said.

Corfu is an incredibly beautiful island with many picturesque villages and hamlets, but sadly much of the coastline is pure bucket-and-spade.

Ah! Found her!

Your memory is far sharper than mine! Great series - enjoyed it immensely. I kinda wondered why the title of the snap came to mind so rapidly; just shows you how we are shaped even by forgotten experiences.

As an aside: how I wish models were still available to me today; life would be full of very different photographic things. Oh well, we muddle along now with what arrives, and feel grateful for what once was there and taken so bloody much for granted. ;-)

It’s a sort of oblique reference to local employment rules, where councils and unions ensure that at least five different departments have to be involved in resolving any minor issue in the public space.

There was a wonderful cartoon that I can’t trace, which showed a deep hole in the street with a poor guy called Jim digging away inside it, with several guys in business suits standing at the edge looking in. The copy reads: this is going over budget: let’s fire Jim.

Thanks for the comment about the snap!

It was actually pushing boundaries to get the two shots. Trying to get the electronic bits large enough to be noticed, with what amounts to a wide angle (being posed as a normal by the phone people), meant that getting closer would have made the verticals look insane, even by Daidochrome standards! The way I had to do it was to shoot, knowing I had to post-correct the verticals as much as I could, but still leave enough image on the sides to crop and give some sense of location. That’s one of the reasons I still hanker for a longer lens on the iPhone: could have shot from further away, reducing the apparent vertical madness, and just done some tighter cropping within the less violently corrected image. Oh well, once my existing deal with the cellphone company is completed (which I had imagined it was), in April I think, then time to think once more of upgrading the iPhone. Oh to have been born rich! ;-)

Thank you degrub; it’s personally quite a relief having got myself into the “Daido” mindset, where there is no concern associated with the making of prints of any of my photos anymore. Indeed, probably none of my current interests would look logical as wall decoration. Lovely to feel free to work on something just because it holds some inexplicable attraction to me that brings the iPhone out of the little bag! Were there some other pressure related to the use of the pix, they wouldn’t happen at all, and I feel gratitude that it’s okay just to play! ;-)

Wonderful explanation and mind set. Freedom.

It would have been nice to have known this point of view some considerable time ago. Better late than never…

I believe I see it happening with some others here on LuLa, where concerns about ultimate technical control and beating the natural laws of one shot, one aperture and one resulting dof, seem to become less important than the kick from the beautiful simplicity of the single, considered exposure.

Thank you; not the kind of snaps a young Rob C might have thought of making, but as one ages, different worlds become relevant and others fade into memory. Commercial glamour would no longer appeal to me very much, but fashion kinda would. The main difficulty with fashion is like a snake’s tongue: it comes in two parts. If you can’t hire a model who inspires you, then even potentially interesting clothes seem boring. On the other hand, if the girl rings your bells, pretty much any old rag can be turned into something interesting - at least to the photographer. I suppose that’s why being offered the gig was, in many ways, the best part: it massaged one’s confidence and self-esteem before even picking up a camera: validation.

In the window shot with the tiny dog: it was barking its ass off at anything that wandered past its home, perhaps the penalty for having such big ears. I wonder if the noise was a signal that there wasn't anyone there, but in that case, would they have left the fire on unattended? Perhaps they had died? Best left to the dog to know and I to ponder. Ah the excitement, the mystery of other people's lives. :-)

Thank you Keith. It's become something to do in winter (going to the bar) as walking supplement to the daily kilometres the medics ordered me to do. Exactly one klick from home, it gives me an extra two I can add on to the usual two, different, ones down the marina, done earlier in the day, rain or shine. I can no longer hack the afternoon wanderings in full summer furnace, though, and trying the early morning trick instead is impossible because I lack the will for early rising, perhaps resentment at those four years of 7.30am starts during my youthful time in engineering... We were slaves. At the very least, photography gave me freedom!

Only been there for two weeks: equatorial rainfall pattern every day around lunchtime, if memory still works - 1984. Discovered Chinese Chablis: delighful. Well Scotland sold bulk whisky to Japan, its knitwear production brands to England, so impossible to blame anyone else for the ripoff trades. The prawns were out of this world; the streets were free of chewing gum and the only street danger at the time was a rash of tv sets flying out of high-rise apartments. Killer trash, I think the papers called it.

Well done, Rob.

Thank’s francois. I had an X1/9 for about a year, back in ‘78 - ‘79, and though I liked it, I had to let it go because of serious neglect in the factory: the alloy wheels came with the balancing weight clipped directly to the metal without any form of electrical insulation. Just one Scottish winter of salted roads was all it took for corrosion to set in. The dealer (a friend!) told me that, for a while, the factory had been offering free wheel replacements… too late for me. Anyway, all is forgiven, and though tiny, it would suit me perfectly today.

Our late friend here, Keith, had two of them… anyway, I made up a T-shirt in memory of the old thing, and several people have spoken to me about it, either having owned one, or wishing they had. Oddly enough, nobody mentions its embarrassing lack of power. Time heals many things, especially memory!

A friend of mine had an X1/9. I remember it very well because my head was in contact with the top all the time (in winter). Salt was not a friend of Italian cars back then. Another friend drove an Alfetta V6  and rust went through the lower panels in a couple of winters.

Italian rust of the period was really Russian rust.

It seems the Italian govt. made a deal with the Ruskies to buy cheap steel from them for favours now lost to me in clouds of political plottings. The result was so severe (for Italy), that Lancia was totally withdrawn from the British market. There’s a lesson somewhere in there.
