Ah! A Rob C rewrite of a BobDavid subject. Nice.

Wot!!! This is the sea!

Actually, it's a shot with (if my memory isn't playing short-term tricks with me again) the seldom-used D700 and my manual 2/35 at f2.8. I stopped down a tiny bit just in case the thing wasn't going to be crisp enough on the grid wide open. The point is, I should just have stayed wide open and got a wee bit more blur, because doing manual focus, as I sway about so much, at that close distance focus without af is going to be approximate at the best of times! Perhaps C focussing would have helped, and a manual optic preclues that, and I think that this is one of those few types of shot when sharpness on the main thing really counts... Tripod? Are you kidding?

Oh well, it's 2017, so new things happen.

;-)

Green from the tree that reminds us of the season of snow.

This is not good Rob. It looks like you are on the inside trying to get out. But I am afraid, since you do so much good work on the inside, you have stay there.

Visited City Hall square with club group last night. Verrrry colddd!! The city tree lights slightly desaturated to bring out the reds even more. And square image with unusual foreground- as if I tried to smudge it- but it all the result of focusing and defocusing two images.

Rob... sumptuous, as usual.

(I was listening to Bernard Stiegler, a French philosopher, who was saying that the primary goal of art prior to the 20th century was "to be sumptuous". I rather liked that).

Thanks for the kind remarks, people.

John's not far off target: I do feel I live most of my present life trying to be somewhere else. I could even say that it goes beyond that, to knowing that I have also felt myself never to belong fully anywhere at all. Perhaps it's due to living in several different countries as a kid, and then again years later on. Perhaps all of us who never really grew up living in any single home town feel that way. In fact, there are times when I look at my life, both the good and the bad of it, and think that I never actually managed to grow up at all, which probably explains why I have enjoyed so much of it. I have also come to realise that I have been truly blessed, and am not at all sure why. Even the hard bits turned out good in that they gave me the inner strength to handle spiritual pain. Crack my leg and I scream as loudly as the next!

Thanks Graham. I was bemused that some people said there is nothing to photograph. It is like saying to a painter, don't go there we have exhausted all possible interpretations. I am always sympathetic, because I once thought that way too.

A few from the same outing. At the time Toronto City Hall was built, it was considered one of the most striking modern buildings:

Those from Toronto will recognize this scene and what I have done to it.

Funny what sunlight can do with a ventilator.

There is a scene in Godard's Alphaville I think... I can't find it now (and google is now flooded by results for a Japanese pop-band who've taken that name).

The flag sure went nicely with the shapes and colours.

This bench, much overlooked, finally made its way into my graces.

I like the sweeping curves and I like the way they are interrupted. I think the grey edge on the right works well but I'm not so sure about the top, does it look just a little pointlessly messy?

Yes, I suppose I could have cropped out the top border of the lamp shade, but I left it in because I am doing series on lamp abstracts from window blinds and sun and shadow effects. I want people to recognize the abstracts are from the lamp, shade and sun and how you can work a scene and get many results.

For now, most are variations on the larger scene of the lamp seen here. I am going to try for some really close up abstracts like the alternating stripes. Should be interesting.

A very pleasing color palette, scene and composition in itself.
