But what a beautiful commentary on abstraction as well as the surrealist movement!

Strictly speaking, Dada preceded surrealism.

and pretty much inspired/led to surrealism.

P.S. I hope it's obvious to all that the "working" definition of "abstract" used for this thread is much looser than the one Alain Briot is promoting in his current essay.

I got it, Eric! funny how the image looks dimmer on the LuLa than on my monitor. Perhaps it is because my image is processed on a dark background.

Abstract, Shmabstract! I love it. And it's bright enough on my monitor (I just calibrated it.)

In the spirit of the new column on "abstractions" by Alain Briot, I thought I would submit this one taken today. And by the way guys, how do you make those small images that expand when clicked? I would rather do that than tie up all this space with huge images.

JR

Nice one, John.

Re image size:  When you use the "Insert Image" icon above the text entry box, as you did here, the image will appear full size within the post; unless it is more than 1202 pixels in the longest dimension, in which case it wil be down-scaled to 1202. But if instead you click "Attachments and other options" below the text entry box, and navigate to the file on your computer, it will show up as a small image that will expand to full size when clicked on. In that case, if it is 1202 pixels (longest dimension) or less, it will expand within the post space. But if it's bigger than 1202, it will open in a new browser window.

Note that for the "Insert Image" approach, the file must be hosted somewhere else on the web, like SmugMug; but for the "Attachments" approach, the file must be on your computer.

I seldom like white in my impressionist images. It often spoils an otherwise good image. But I can live with this one.

And here is one I took which keeps attracting my attention until I could no longer ignore it. So I processed it and came up with this.

This is quite awesome :)  (Looks fine - nice and punchy - on my calibrated monitor, BTW)

X-actly, Arlen. I knew that. Is it from the "rock files."

You may notice a fading circle in the red wall. This a place abandoned by "Target", who tried to compete in Canada with Walmart and Sears.

Nice, ultra clean one, and even the huge personal logo has a perfect, relevant place!

Right. And it shows us that John's blurry pix aren't from camera shake.   :D

No, "it's alive, it's alive".

If there is life on Mars, it will most likely look similar to this. A mixed bacterial culture within or below the rusty regolith.

Each time I look at it I expect to see parts of it moving, but I haven't caught it yet.

I like the absurdity. I realize it's not something a lot of viewers will appreciate, but I do.

I like it too, and I suspected Bob would like it.
