Sometimes when I see such subtle arrangement and distribution of colours I want to increase the contrast to bring out the contrasting colours even more.
Absolutely, a great point.
This image in particular is a confounding example, because it has two things going on: first, over time I have learned to moderate away from just cranking the contrast on everything. I find I enjoy a lot of softer palettes in narrower gamuts just as much. (And one of the nice side benefits of that approach is that, since I am always shooting for printed output, they tend to stay in gamut!)
The other thing going on with this one is that there is a ton of "microcontrast" that is getting lost in this low-resolution version. I really should have a dedicate pipeline for sharpening at each resolution, but even then I would not be able to make this particular image look the same. I'm afraid it really has to be seen at at 8MP or greater for the local contrast to pop out correctly. I didn't realize that when I posted it here.
