Is it abstract? I don't know but it wasn't taken as a picture of a door :)

Nice, Chris.

With a hint of JohnR, and not an egret in sight.  ;)

Yes, Chris, that last impressionist image was an egret-ious oversight on your part.

Here is one taken about 20 minutes ago in the house.

I can't find the egrets in that one either, John.  ;)

Someone is bound to have asked this before but, can an image be classified as an abstract if you can recognise what it is?

Good question. In my view it is greatly about intent - is the above a photograph of a lamp or one that plays on shape, light and form which happens to be recognisable as a lamp.

My door above is a door but I don't care that it's a door, I like the shape etc.

I'd also add - who cares :)

Following on the above question - is this abstract? I'd happily enter it in arhitecture in a club competition but equally it's so obviously a play on light, colour and geometry it has lost its original being.

No, Roger, I don't think that it can. I think that people confuse a graphic with an abstract.

My dictionary defines it as such: relating to or denoting art that does not attempt to represent external, recognizable reality.

That seems perfectly clear-cut to me, but of course, I'm not a lawyer.

Key word attempt, I wasn't interested in the door but it happened to be represented well. I didn't attempt to do so :) Stretching it a bit I agree :)

Yes the dictionary is correct. But we have discussed this before. We could have just easily called this thread, semi-abstract, or non representational imagery. In my experience, whether in art or photography few if any works appeal to people if they do not have something that people can relate to. When in an art venue or gallery, you sometimes hear comments like, I could have done that piece of garbage. If you do abstract work, you walk a fine line.

As I have suggested before, my own quasi-definition of "abstract," at least for this thread, is that if the poster sort of, kind of, thinks of an image as "abstract," then it is. If the intention is to show a visual effect rather than to show the identity of the object(s) in front of the camera, than it is OK in my book.

So what I wonder now is:  Is this post of mine sufficiently abstract???   ;)

I attempted to answer that question before, in this thread:

http://forum.luminous-landscape.com/index.php?topic=100317.msg821965#msg821965.

The gist of which is there are 14 different dictionary meanings, plus two idioms, of the term "abstract." Especially pertinent is #5, related to fine arts.

And you did it very well there.

Thanks for the link.

Much to my amazement, I had completely missed that thread, which spun out while I was traipsing through the Dordogne last year.
Your images there are not about buildings as man-made structures in which people live or work, they are clearly about the patterns and light effects, which makes them abstract (#5) in my book.

Is this the silly season? If it is, I shall refrain from commenting because my problem will be that I won't know when said season has ended.

On less abstract matters: two or so years ago I worked out the selling price for my apartment on a pound/euro conversion rate of €1,32 to the pound. Today, I discovered the pound is now worth €1,17. Of course leaving the EU won't have any effect on the pound in your pocket, just as Mr Wilson said some decades ago on another fiscal matter!

I just hope as a last desperate hope, that the matter will be thrown around in Parliament, that it finally accepts the need to take responsibility and actually govern and take at least one important decision, and that bloody clause never activated.

Watching Blair's interview post the C. Report, I felt kinda sorry for him. How wonderfully savvy these journos are today; how few of them ever had to make any decisions that made any difference at all. Oh, the strength of the wolf pack, or even, in this case, the jackals.

For some reason this one reminds me of surveillance, peeping eyes and sensors.

And this one is more like light trying to envelope a space.
