Neon colors - √
Interesting patterns - √
Oversized watermark - √
Successful overall - √

As you can see, the image elicits plenty of checkmarks ;)

Check!
You guys just ticked me off. I think it would have been even better had they not switched to LED lights. So many intermitten lights.

I find that I photograph trees rather a lot - one of my favourite subjects.

I have been working on a project for a little while trying to show some of the characteristics of trees - colour, movement, patterns etc. - without the distractions of precise depiction but retaining a recognizable character and staying short of full abstraction. After all trees are rarely seen in total static state by us -  either they or we are moving when we see them and an attempt to show the features as moving impressions may be as valid as a perfect still image.

There are images on this thread which are not dissimilar and I would be very interested in any response, comment and criticism on these sample images , please.

These are very interesting. Your technique seems to be similar to John R's, but the results have a very different mood. I like all of these, but the first seems especially fine.

For me the last one seems most effective as the colours seem strongest. This is not an easy technique and your shots seem good but maybe some suffer from too much bright cloud/sky?

Ice in Malghera.
Very nice, I prefer the second. Still waiting for snow or freeze to get something similar.

Yes, the second one for me, too. I love that kind of stuff.

Thank you very much for the comments.

Eric  -  Yes i have seen John R's work and find it interesting - personally I am wanting to retain more of the subject matter and be a little less 'abstract' than he  ... but it is,of course, all a matter of taste. I agree with your choice - it is one that I feel is more successful than some.

drmike - i can see your point about the brightness but in a print it seems to distract less and even add to the complexity of the image - but a point to weigh for the future, thanks.

More generally i am not too sure what legs this little project has against my more usual 'tree fetish' images.

Like armand, I find 4943QN more absorbing.

I can imagen patching highlights sort of like that.  However, I wonder if you had it pressed against a glass or removed from a glass so that the high points looked patched, or are you telling?

Bruce, I'm sorry, but my poor english doesn't let me understand well what do you mean with "patching the highlights" :(.
Anyway, the photo is a crop of a shot taken in Western Grosina Valley, near the "Brata hut", the  alpine hut of my father in law. The aspect of the ice is a natural phenomenon, under the ice flows water.

This is the original, not post produced photo.

Thanks, it was just my delusion.  Every thing is starting to look like PhotoShop to me.  The relatively flat areas with sharp borders fooled me.

This one is true minimalist abstract. Nice!

Compared to the previous photograph this doesn't seem very minimal now :)

Now I understand, they seem really patched, but they aren't, they are only holes in the ice with the grey flowing water underneath. (The heavy pp was made of levels, curves and an indecent use of the color boost slider (50) in Nikon Capture NX2)
