Yep, some passing fun to while away the hours...

It was something I started to do a while ago when I realised that you don't have to leave the house to find images. It's not so easy, because familiarity breeds etc. etc. However, if you let yourself get into it, you can be surprised. I suppose it all comes down to what tickles your fancy about pictures. I'm currently doing my best to aoid the literal, something aided by failing eyesight!

Who was the photographer who got ill and was confined to his house for 12 months and just did tulips for a year? I understand it produced some excellent shots.

Don't know of him, but I do know something about this chap: locked away with Marilyn for a while instead of tulips...

Can't link directly to the 'movie' but it's easy to find on the site under 'trailer'. One of the 50s pioneers.

Really like the lights series of shots. The bw format suits them well, including the half-bw shot. Last time I pointed my camera at elevator, I got kicked out of building!

@Rob C I have seen many of these wonderful images and other photographs of a woman who must rank amongst the most beautiful ever. I have even seen some bad photographs of her, but not many.

I was totally blown away by a 4 foot square shot by Stern of Twiggy (in front of modern art) in Dublin Art gallery. I learned from that image. There were imperfections - which really didn't matter and sheer quality and size count. Should we sweat the last stray hair? The last highlight near the edge? Even perhaps slightly imperfect makeup?

Made me think that sometimes it just doesn't matter, the image can carry the load. Other times, especially commercially it does matter. But it made me think and that was good.

That's really nice stuff, Mike. Puts me in mind of a classic futuristic movie whose name I can't recall. It also reminds me of lying on a stetcher and watching the ceiling drift past as I went through hospital corridors.

I wonder if there exists a genre name for this kind of material - I suppose abstract covers it, but I think there must be/should be something more accurately focussed than that. It's not as if one doesn't know what one sees, but that it's done in a way that gives a fresh look at it. Enjoy those sorts of images that hold your attention and make you look more deeply at what is in front of you.

They do seem to occupy the hinterland between abstract and record.

Just taking what's there and adjusting the reality a bit.

But I think I have now run out of lights that aren't just lights.

Yes, Stern was something else!

As with so many other amazing photographers, I discovered him in the pages of the two Pop. Phot. annuals: Photography Annual and Color Annual both put out by the magazine. I remember his series there on the Heublein Vodka campaigns; I also discovered Saul Leiter in those pages and many more; anyone worth knowing you found there at one time or another. Trouble was finding the annuals in Glasgow!

His (Stern's) Jazz on a Summer's Day was one of those movies I saw at least five or even more times, not counting years later on the Internet. Click on the image to watch. Watch Chuck steal the show despite snobbish jazz musos doing their 'creative' distance... ;-)

Happy days; all still in front of one, if one ever gave that a passing thought.

There is a very nicely restored copy of this film on Netflix. Beautiful stuff.

Shows what a good film maker can do with much less than 13 stops of DR. ;-)

All I have to do is go away for a week and you all have produced several pages of really great stuff in this thread!
Maybe I should go away more often.

I'll have some more contributions of my own after I've had a chance to sort and process the best of my new 500+ images.
