You seem to take for granted that motion and still will converge. I don't.
I hope we get to bid a project against each other. (yea, insert smiley face thing).
Actually I'd like to meet the professional photographer that hasn't been asked to shoot motion. Sure some just do behind the scenes, some shoot full blown production and yes I know the difference in working and understanding the mediums. Sometimes they're huge, like scripted theatrical and sometimes the only difference is the frame is skinnier and you shoot more frames than normal.
It all depends on what you do, but PDN which I guess is the bible of our industry (God help us), listed the 5 biggest changes in photography and 2 applied to motion imagery.
I don't think 10 years ago PDN was talking about 5k motion cameras and image stabilizers.
But I don't care. Personally I shoot both, see advantage in both, depending on the project usually like one medium better than the other, though like everything my thoughts change on this.
But this is what I mean about modular. With EVFs we don't have to have a viewfinder stuck in one place, or an lcd screen that is glued on the back. We can have two viewfinders, replaceable moveable ones, modules to connect sound, or output files, store files, speed up in camera processing and a long list of other things I'm not thinking of at the moment.
I do know this. In merica" and some of Europe bigger always seems better and sometimes that's not true. Those little gh3's shoot way above their weight and cost class and the new gh4 will offer 10 bit 422 files, at 100mbs. That's huge in the motion world.
Will it shoot stills, hope so, but I don't care, all I want is my Olympus to be able to tether and I'm set.
Now will I get rid of my RED's. Naw, not any more than I sold my contax and phase, or any camera out will keep me from buying a leica. Some cameras you just like and if they work and you enjoy them, why not.
Everything doesn't have to be rational, but what I seem to get from this forum is 35mm guys have some kind of complex. They hate medium format for the cost and size, hate 4/3 for the cost and size.
I don't get it.
IMO
