Well it has still gathered Nikon publicity. So it would appear that indeed it is better to  be lucky than good.

I guess they didn't like the claims by some 1DX users that their body had a better AF... ;)

This being said, Nikon has a tradition of releasing "S" versions of most of their pro bodies.

In fact, the D3x is the only one in the last 8 years that didn't get an "S" version, probably because it never got bettered by the competition.

Cheers,
Bernard

I don't think they will repeat the D3x bloomer with a D4x.

I did wonder if a D4s was imminent when several of the major Nikon retailers started heavily discounting the D4 last week.

I don't think they will repeat the D3x bloomer...

" Also called the "Turkish dress," "American dress," or simply “reform dress,” bloomers were an innovation of readers of the Water-Cure Journal, a popular health periodical that in October 1849 began urging women to develop a style of dress that was not so harmful to their health as the current fashion. The fashionable dress of that time consisted of a skirt that dragged several inches on the floor, worn over layers of starched petticoats stiffened with straw or horsehair sewn into the hems. In addition to the heavy skirts, prevailing fashion called for a “long waist” effect, achieved with a whale-bone-fitted corset that pushed the wearer’s internal organs out of their normal place. The result was a feminine population which, as one medical professor warned his students, was of no use as cadavers from which to study human anatomy."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomers_(clothing)

And, in this context, the meaning is … ?

I know a dealer in the Southwest.   Small dealer, sells a lot of Nikons and ordered early when the D3x was announced.   A few months after it shipped I was in his shop buying some grip and asked him how the D3x was selling.  He said good, I forget the numbers but he was averaging one or two a day, which at the price and given the U.S. recession had hit hard I guess those were good numbers for such a small dealer.

I asked him how many he has sold to professionals and he held up his hand and made a zero.  I said how come? and he said "oh I dunno, the Nikon guys had already spent their money on the D3 and given his market most people already were into Canons and they had 22mp already.

Now I do know a few professionals that bought a d3x but I think most of them moved on to the d800.

Sell still only $7,000 cameras was difficult in 2008, probably just as difficult today and I'm curious if Nikon made a d4x how many people would buy it unless it had a lot more megapixels?

I get the feeling we won't see any new pro or semi pro nikon until Canon comes out with a larger megapixel body, then as usual Canon trumps Nikon, then Nikon trumps Canon and well the wheel keeps spinning.

Actually I think with motion and still convergence and the upcoming 4k craze that will hit, I don't know why Nikon hasn't moved deeper into motion cameras, but honestly I don't sell cameras so I really don't understand the thought process.

Unfortunately, and incredibly, Canon hasn't trumped anybody for a very long time. Don't count on it continuing.

Nikon, judging by recent performance , are rarely first out of the gate – they'll wait and eventually produce a camera that's ground breaking (Df excepted) – if not in technical terms, then in price terms. Whatever you think of the D800, it set a new benchmark for pro-level 36MP, undercutting the Leica S2 by a huge amount.

I expect they'll try to do the same with the upcoming 4K.

I hope they do.   I'm not a brand boy, don't care since I have both lens sets anyway, though I wonder if real professional motion imagery is on Nikon's list?

And BTW:   I think the D800 is perfect for a lot of people, not just me.  I have 30 mpx that need flash and other cameras that do faster autofocus, and 2 to 4k video cameras, so the d800 wasn't anything that was filling a missing blank in our kit.

In regards to it hurting the Leica, probably though I don't know the camera business, just the photography business, though I really wonder if the leica buyer that is really serious, ever compares the two

To me those tests are for the bloggers.\

You seem to take for granted that motion and still will converge. I don't.

It have converged in the low-end (cell phones) and there might be segments where the benefits are too large to ignore. I still think that a large percentage of users specialise on stills _or_ video, and/or that they prefer tools that specialise on one thing.

But then I am the kind of guy that gets annoyed at all of the tools around me that tries to be swiss army knifes, and enjoy those tools who does one thing only (but gets it right).

You may be right in large measure but, already, the really top-end professionals are shooting a lot of movie clips on dSLRs. For example, any pro commissioned to do a photo-shoot for any of the really posh fashion/lifestyle magazines is expected also to provide movie clips for use on the magazines' online editions which, increasingly, are replacing the print editions in circulation terms.

You are really comparing apples and grapefruit there. The S2 is a "medium format"  camera system. But I agree about the D800 setting consumers expectations for what is a reasonable a 35mm format based high MP DSLR camera ought to be selling for.

As to who needs a D4s? Most not the people who use the Luminous-Landscape forums. I haven't looked but I wonder what the reaction is on sportshooter.com and similar forums?

Wonder if they will stay with the Sony XQD card, or go back to CF?  ???

I'm curious as to the improvements in their AF system too.

I hope we get to bid a project against each other. (yea, insert smiley face thing).

Actually I'd like to meet the professional photographer that hasn't been asked to shoot motion.  Sure some just do behind the scenes, some shoot full blown production and yes I know the difference in working and understanding the mediums.   Sometimes they're huge, like scripted theatrical and sometimes the only difference is the frame is skinnier and you shoot more frames than normal.

It all depends on what you do, but PDN which I guess is the bible of our industry (God help us), listed the 5 biggest changes in photography and 2 applied to motion imagery.

I don't think 10 years ago PDN was talking about 5k motion cameras and image stabilizers.

But I don't care.  Personally I shoot both, see advantage in both, depending on the project usually like one medium better than the other, though like everything my thoughts change on this.

But this is what I mean about modular.  With EVFs we don't have to have a viewfinder stuck in one place, or an lcd screen that is glued on the back.  We can have two viewfinders, replaceable moveable ones, modules to connect sound, or output files, store files, speed up in camera processing and a long list of other things I'm not thinking of at the moment.

I do know this.  In merica" and some of Europe bigger always seems better and sometimes that's not true.  Those little gh3's shoot way above their weight and cost class and the new gh4 will offer 10 bit 422 files, at 100mbs.  That's huge in the motion world.

Will it shoot stills, hope so, but I don't care, all I want is my Olympus to be able to tether and I'm set.

Now will I get rid of my RED's.  Naw, not any more than I sold my contax and phase, or any camera out will keep me from buying a leica.  Some cameras you just like and if they work and you enjoy them, why not.

Everything doesn't have to be rational, but what I seem to get from this forum is 35mm guys have some kind of complex.  They hate medium format for the cost and size, hate 4/3 for the cost and size.

I don't get it.

The only improvements are said to be hi-iso noise performance, FPS and AF… Noise is said (by NR) to be improved via using same sensor but with new processor. Most people think that what they are trying to do, is to differentiate D4S as much as possible, because they plan to use the sensor (but with "plain" D4 performance) on lower FF bodies like D800 (there seems to be high demand for that - D700 replacement) and thus to avoid "internal" cannibalisation of the D4… XQD stays!

If the D4S does 4K video - you will see thousands of pro's who will jump on it. Panasonic see's the window and has the GH4 coming out with 4K video. Canon's only options is prohibitively expensive with their 1Dx (fantastic camera) modified to shoot 4K video.

But maybe the New Nikon will only be an upgrade to compete with the 1Dx… Not a leap ahead.

You are a pro, I am a hobbyist. I will never ask for money taking snaps of anything.

I think that other trends are far more relevant than the inclusion of (usually user-unfriendly) video on still-image cameras and the slow death of traditional consumer video cameras.
1. iPhones. People shoot everything.
2. Facebook. People share everything.
3. Gopro. People shoot video in unusual settings.
4. Youtube. People share homevideos.
5. Paper magazines are dying.
6. People live a more "restless" life, meaning that they might not want a photography hanging on their wall for the rest of their life (costing a lot of $$)

Everything doesn't have to be rational, but what I seem to get from this forum is 35mm guys have some kind of complex.  They hate medium format for the cost and size, hate 4/3 for the cost and size.

I don't have access to either of those formats mentioned. I have APS-C and 1", both fill their intended spot nicely.

I'd love to have access to a larger format digital with lens movement, but I can't in any way justify buying one.

I have been asked doing both several times. The thing I am experiencing with doing both stills and video is that I seem to have trouble doing both at the same time. I can do either video or stills when I try to do both one or the other will suffer.

How do you cope with that? Is that something you get used at or do you slice your day into segments where you focus on one thing?
