I guess, but why not wait until 10 laps in or something, when there's a lull in the action? Were they there to see the event, or to take pictures of themselves at the event?

The really frustrating thing is that they were standing up, getting in the way of all the other spectators, who had no interest in these clowns.

Anyway, who'd care? Vettel always wins, just as did Michael S with Ferrari many years ago. That's why he was forced to retire: the attendance numbers were dropping off due to boredom. (My interpretation of this racing life.)

Well, before Schumacher there were dynasties of Senna, Prost, Piquet, Lauda, etc., etc. The only difference is that the cars are so much more reliable now that these streaks have no random breakages. F1 has no "on any given day" aspect, like football. But, this was the first time I'd actually had the selfie phenomena get in my way.

Come to think of it, maybe not. The locals had pretty much sewed up the practice of the selfie when I lived in Japan in the late 90s. They actually had just as much trouble understanding why we didn't want pictures of ourselves in front of every major tourist attraction. But at least they were doing them as group photos in most cases.

Typically these are pictures to be shared, and they say "I am here, at F1!" to all their friends.

There's some sort of affirmation of existence going on with a lot of this stuff. It's some sort of externalized interior monologue, and it's some sort of "I exist, I am here!" impulse intertwined with that.

Excellent idea, Peter, but I think your example needs a little more work in Photoshop to align the mouth angle to match that of the shelves.
