I vote for the second. It features the mushrooms and minimizes the distracting branch just above the stump, which is why I prefer the horizontal version even though the mushrooms themselves seem to ask for a vertical orientation.

I agree, I would try to get closer and avoid the background clutter. Image #2 comes close.

I like the new one. I'd still be tempted to crop down from the top to eliminate the background above it, which I find distracting. With that part gone, I think it really shows the mushrooms nicely.

I would also crop the top part but in general, it's the best of the bunch.

I'm so disappointed,    :D  I thought it was a baby saguaro.

Well, I like it even if it's only a mushroom. The "serrated" background is also interesting.
