+1
Virtually the same quality but no clogging, way better scratch resistance, lower ink consumption, faster print speed, nice software (PS Plug-in + Gallery Wrap, Free Layout, Accounting Manager, Media Configuration Tool)... And in case of fatal head stroke you just change the user replaceable head, not the printer ;)

A colleague at work just bought a 8400.  A long-time Epson user who had to retire his dead-head printer sooner than he had planned.  He loves it and has become a bit of a boring evangelist.

I finally saw a print from a x400 and I'm sold.  The 8400 is too rich for my wallet, but an ipf6400 is in my future before the big rebates end.  I'll be keeping my 3880 as its been bullet-proof!

Hmmm... and extra ~ $2K or so is just out of my range.  I'm quite happy with my 4900 so think I'll just wait it out.

I don't know if B&H ships to where you are, but with the current Canon/Epson rebates the ipf8400 is $400 cheaper than the 9900.

Well that does sound better, but unfortunately the shipping costs would eat that up in no time, let alone any customs/brokerage fees.  The exchange rate isn't too bad, but on that amount it's something to consider too, and there's the warranty. I want to make sure its serviceable under warranty in Canada.  The rebates locally are not that deep for the Canon either.  It's disappointing, but I'll wait.

The deal isn't as good, I got mine for $3000 after rebate, but it's still a heck cheaper than the 9900.

Well, the best deal I can find on the 8400 is still $800 more than the 9900 in Canada. I'll stick to the 9900.

I suggested the 9890 to you way back...
The very small gamut difference isn't really worth the extra $$ for photographic purposes once your working with custom profiles. ;-)

Take note that Epson SPx900 comes with 11x110ml of ink (worht US 500$), while iPF8400 comes with 12x330ml of ink (worth US 1663$).

Also consider the fact that 330ml of Canon LUCIA EX ink corresponds to ~470ml of Epson K3 HDR ink, as Canon consumes ~30% less ink than Epson (same prints, same quality), and it also wastes much less ink for maintenance.

Well.. it ALMOST arrived today.  I saw it sitting on the truck but couldn't get it off just yet.  Fedex told me it would arrive between 9am and 1pm.  A non-Fedex truck arrived at 3:00pm and by then any help I could muster had already left the area. :(  The crate is too big to get through the front door (immediate left hand turn in a small vestibule just inside my front door) so my only option is to bring it through my neighbour/landlords's loading dock which is in the same building, but waaaay out back, unpack it there and bring it in piece by piece to the studio for assembly.  argh!
At least I've got a couple of guys lined up then and the driver 'promised' to be here between 10:30 and noon tomorrow.

Cool!  So close!  My method has been to specify a truck with a power lift gate, put it down on the driveway, assemble the printer outside, then roll it in on its own base.  I'm sure you've thought this out, but a couple 4 wheel floor dollies could be useful and can be rented at U-Haul agencies, etc.  Anyway, I hope it doesn't get too memorable.  A printer like that is a big step in a young-man's life and we're all expecting great things from you.   :)

Did you by chance order it through vistek and have it drop shipped direct to you?

The stand is in pieces, and you need to put that together first. But the printer is in one piece.

Afraid it's going to be -12 Celsius tomorrow Bill, so I won't be assembling it outside.  The truck has a power lift gate, but it's also the right height for the loading dock so shouldn't be a problem and the shop area is huge so lots of room to assemble it and then possibly wheel it right into the studio.

And yes nairb, I did order it through Vistek and having it drop shipped.  I actually got the call from Fedex stating the window of delivery (9am to 1pm), but the driver of the actual truck (not Fedex) said they had no delivery times given to them.  Anyway, he's actually driving from Owen Sound (I think the printer came via London so ended up in western Ontario) and is supposed to call me when he leaves so that I have a better idea of when he'll arrive.

  Mike,
you preferrably need 4 people to lift it onto the stand and  another to guide it into position, and be carefull of where the handholds are for safely lifting it. Diagram included in the unpacking and setup papers.

I'll have at least two others in addition to myself and one of them has put together a couple of these printers so is well versed in their assembly. I'm sure I can grab a 4th if needed.  I've watched the assembly video a few times so I'm sure everything will go smoothly - as soon as I can actually get it that is.

Thanks Mike, that's what I had looked into as well.

Did you happen to get an extended warranty with it, and by chance did you inquire as to what would happen if it needs a warranty repair? ie, will a service tech come to you from Toronto? It's been a while since I checked, but I believe I'm too far from a major centre for this kind of service. Or I could be charged a lot for 6 hours of travel.
