Epson 7900 dark print resolve
« on: July 12, 2012, 05:54:15 pm »

I have still been trying to nail accurate prints to match my artwork I scanned and what I see on my monitor. A friend just printed my file on their 9900 and it matched so much better. He has a pc and I have a Mac. I had a thought that besides the Mac system shifting/reinterpreting the colors ... could a possible problem be I have the Epson latest driver (even thou I let psd manage the colors) and still on Mac system 10.5. and CS4 in Photoshop. POSSIBLY could the older, but quite reliable, software versions be the lagging element? Any help would be most appreciated.

It most likely has nothing to do with Mac versus PC. If the same file prints better on his printer than on yours, and the two models' print engines work about identically, it points to the scan file being OK, but something wrong with your colour management set-up. Without knowing more detail about how you have set all the variables that control your printing it is impossible to provide more pointed advice.

Another user recently asked a similar question (dark prints). I suggest that you start by analyzing each of the potential causes I listed. This time the correct answer was "no profiling", which I felt a bit silly about even suggesting at the time I wrote the reply as double profiling is a more common mistake. Having profiling off in both Photoshop and the print driver can result in some very "unique" looking prints.

Thanks for any direction you can provide towards solving it. I did run across this great article which I feel is what is happening except this is for sending targets to get profiles made. Would it help my situation to have my printer profiled for my favorite papers? I did it with my Epson 7800 and he had trouble with my Mac system also.
