Confusion Over Inserting Photo in Thread
« on: May 02, 2012, 02:21:38 pm »

I have read the instructions for inserting a photo in a thread query but am still puzzled on just how to do it.  Let's say I have a JPG photo on my hard drive that I want to insert as an example of a problem I'm having.  I tried a copy-and-paste action, but this doesn't work.  What am I not understanding from the forum instructions?  Many thanks.  Jim

You need to know the location of the jpeg on your hard drive.

When you click on the "Reply" button at the bottom of a post, a new window opens, labeled "Post Reply," where you will find a large text box available for writing your reply. Below that text box, under "Additional Options..." you will see a grayed-out box labeled "Attach:" with a "Browse" button at the right.

Click on the "Browse" button, and a file browser of your local computer will appear. You need to navigate through that browser to find the jpeg file you wish to attach. Once you click on the file in the browser and click the "Open" button, the path to that file will appear in the previously grayed-out box. Then, when you click on the "Post" button, your file will be uploaded to the LuLa server along with whatever you wrote in the text box.

If you want to attach additional photos (up to a maximum of four in any one post), click on "(more attachments)."

This is exactly what I did on my PC to attach this photo of flowers in my yard. I hope this helps.

Eric:  I (believe) I have posted my query with JPEG attachment, per your very straight-forward instructiions, but it doesn't seem to be appearing.  Do queries with photos attached take longer to appear?  Anyway, many thanks.  Jim

Jim, preview does not work with attached photos (but you can still preview the text), that is probably the reason you do not see it. Just attach it as per Eric's instructions, and post.

Yes, the "Preview" button should really be renamed the "Preview Text" button.

Gentlemen: I tried posting it twice, hitting the "Post" button each time, but nothing appeared.  My JPEG was 1,430 KB.  Is that too large to be accepted?  Much appreciate your guidance.

It is not too large, the max is 4 Mb.

Steps:

1. Choose file
2. Post

Can not be simpler, and works every time. :)

Ok, lets try visually:

It still doesn't work, and I DO understand your very simple instructions.  Maybe the path to my photo is too long.

I can move the photo on my hard drive to effect a shorter path, if that's the problem.  Again, thanks.  Jim

The path length is a likely culprit, I suspect.

I have a folder called "uploads" at the top of my D-drive ("D:\uploads") where I copy things before uploading. I don't remember what prompted me to do this in the first place, but it very likely had to do with avoiding long pathnames.

Good luck!

Nope, shortening path and name still don't work.  I do get a designation though after trying to send that reads (in part): "=0;board=12x"  I'm at a loss, and probably you are, too.

The only thing I can think of at this point is to try to start from scratch: empty your browser's cache, reload the page and try again?

Seems like you're using some version of MS Windows. Maybe it would help if you said which web browser (and version) you're using; and then walk through an attempt to attach a jpg, listing all the actions you take and what changes you see after those actions.

My operating system is Windows 7.  My preferred browser is Mozilla Firefox, but today I attempted also to attach my photo to a post, entering LLF via Windows Internet Explorer.  The attachment "box' recognizes my path with the photo, but each and every time when I hit the "Post' button, nothing ever happens.  The screen just sits there. No follow through.  No error message appears.  I am not a complete novice in computer operations (my wife is a professional programmer/analyst).  I cannot fathom what could possibly be preventing me from performing this quite simple function on the forum.  I think I'll give up (for now).   Thanks again to all.

Jim, I can confirm that the same thing occasionally happens to me. What works for me is to reload the page and start from scratch.

By "reload page,' I assume you mean start from scratch.  That also doesn't work.  And I know the jpg photo is there, for when i click on it on the hard drive, it comes up fully on screen.

No, by "reload the page" I mean clicking on the circular arrow sign at the end of your browser address bar. Or, if you prefer a menu approach, in Firefox you can find it under: View/Reload.

I am attaching a screen shot of a Firefox window on top of my Safari window, with arrows pointing to those circular ones.

I switched to another (Windows 7) computer, and it still wouldn't post my query with the jpg attachment.  Following is the resulting "address" line (which doesn't appear to connect):

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?action=post2;start=0;board=12

Now, even a bigger mystery.

Following is the resulting "address" line

If I browse through the directories and Attach an image; and then click the Post button without putting any text into the comment box, the page shows this error message --

"The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
The message body was left empty."

-- with the "address" line --

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?action=post2;start=0;board=12

Perhaps scroll the page up and down, searching for an error message (or use the Firefox Find... menu item to search for the word error)

The following is the "error' message I receive, which really has no relevance that I can see to my circumstance (none of the reasons for failure apply):

The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
Your session timed out while posting. Please try to re-submit your message.
No subject was filled in.
The message body was left empty.

Jim, are you saying that your subject line and message body is not left empty, i.e., that you do have a text in both, and yet the error message states they are empty?

As for the other error message ("Your session timed out while posting"), it does appear quite often for me too, but quickly resolved by clicking "Post" or "Preview" once again (or, if that does not help, reloading the page).
