Canon 1D Mark IV no longer in production?
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:32:01 am »

I've been searching for months for a 1D Mk IV. My benchmark is B&H. They've been out of stock for nearly 6-months. I know the horrible tsunami in Japan knocked much of camera production for a loop, but now, 9-months later, high end cameras are hard to find. That leads me to speculation: has Canon ceased production of the 1D4 (and 1Ds3) to focus on new models? As a CPS Member, I received emails from Canon that parts might be scarce for awhile, but that was back in March when new high end cameras were drying up. Any thoughts on the rumor mill? All my bodies are 3-4 years old so, in my eye, a little long in the tooth in the digital world. I'm happy with them, but after using a CPS 1D4 a number of times would love to upgrade mynaging 1D3.

I actually ordered one today as a 2nd body for a trip to Antarctica in November this year. They can be a bit hard to get a hold of; which is fuelling and stoking the rumour mills - but they are still definitely current and not discontinued (Im also a CPS Gold member)

After a lot of searching, I actually found a place with a 1D4 in stock (or so they say) at a reasonable price. That said, most stores, if they actually have one, seem to be charging a $1000-2000 premium. Since B&H has not had ANY stock in quite some time, I still wonder what's up Canon's sleeve. But you never know till they actually announce it. Due to the shortages, I've actually had greater use out of my current cameras (4-yrs for 1D3 and 3-1/2 years for the 1Ds3), than I've ever had. Better for my bottomline I guess! I opted for the CPS Platinum (I've actually been a CPS member since 1983), because it's the only thing close to the previous program.

Yes, I agree. I have also had excellent use out of my 1DS MKIII; which I have had pretty much since they came out. Here in Australia 1D MKIV's are relatively easy to source at present and I was able to choose where I wanted to buy it more or less. As too price, also pretty readily available here currently well below MSRP. For whatever reason you guys in the USA seem to be getting stooged on stock and price. Have to say... its nice for the shoe to be on the other foot for a change  ;D

We don't have CPS Platinum in Australia - Gold is our top level. But that said the service out of CPS here is generally excellent.

I am not in the loop for the new models (I have no official word on when they are coming); but given its now almost mid september and there have been no announcements I find it highly unlikely that there will be either a new 1D MKV and or 1DS MKIV available this year (available being the key word). An announcement is one thing - availability is quite another as evidenced by other new Canon lenses.

As information, the camera is still in production, in fact we just received one of our backordered units and put it into inventory today.
