A question for users of Sinar Capture Shop
« on: June 25, 2011, 01:45:32 pm »

I would like to know what is the favorite mode of postproduction of Sinar CaptureShop's users. Do you go directly to the Tiff files with CaptureShop, without worrying about DNG ? Would you rather go through Adobe Bridge or Lightroom to convert to TIFF ? Do you work on your DNG files (with Bridge & Lightroom)? Does the results of the preview mode correspond to the 1 shot and the multishot mode in terms of contrast and exposure ?

I ask myself many questions about the best mode of development of RAW (DNG) to TIFF or PSD ...

I prefer Sinar eXposure. There I make my DNGs (Batch) and then open it in Bridge. I try to avoid photoshop, Colors, exposure, contrast and nearly all changes of the picture are possible in Bridge (or Lightroom), easier and quicker. I like the non destructive kind of workflow. At the end annother Batch to make jpgs for the client.

I also use eXposure, and then LR3 to develop the DNG files, generate client previews, make selections, etc. But at the end of the day, eXposure still develops a slightly higher quality TIFF file. LR (I'm using 3.4.1) can still leave a little mosaic pattern in the file, and slightly more moiré. It's a little sharper overall, but if I sharpen an eXposure TIFF to match, the mosaic and moiré is still better. I should point out that these differences are really minor and only apparent when pixel peeping.

This might be helpful - I have created a cropped Photoshop file with the LR TIFF and eXposure TIFF in 2 layers, so you can toggle between them and see the difference directly. I'd recommend viewing at 200%.

Personally, I do not use eXposure, because I realize 99.9% of my images in multishoot mode.

PDF,

Are you using CS 6 to read your 16-shot (SINAR 54H?) files?

I have not upgraded to CS 6.0 and am still using a stable earlier version with my SINAR 54H.

I think that the eXposure has a finer control of the RAW file, but the simplicity of using CS 6.0 with files made by my SINAR eMotion 75 LV on the Hy6 carry more weight with me.  I cannot see that I am losing any thing by adjusting exposure in CS 6 just slightly (generally increasing exposure by 1/10 a f-stop) then exporting the file and opening the resultant TIFF file through BRIDGE as a Adobe RAW file, where there are plenty of useful tools, like the gradient tool, the adjustment brush and Content-Aware spotting.

I use Captureshop 6.0 only to download the images from the CF card (having moved them to the card from internal memory) and save them automatically as DNGs in my Pictures folder. I then move them to wherever I want to have them (different disk, folder etc), import them to LR3 and process them there. I  leave them as DNGs (I save all edits in the DNG files themselves, using Cmd A + Cmd S periodically). I export to TIFF only when I want to print (Imageprint does not see DNGs) or to Jpegs when I want to email or publish online (in other words, I export only those images that I need for some final use, with the appropriate size/sharpening settings). Finally, I occasionally process selected images in C1, mainly where I need to suppress moire (C1 is better at this than LR3) or where I want to correct the "converging parallels", using C1's keystone correction tool. The back is eMotion 75LV, on the Sinar Hy6.

The reason I do not do any editing in Captureshop is (a) the program is not all that stable yet and (b) I find the controls in CS somewhat crude and (c) why learn another workflow when LR3 is so intuitive and the DNGs from the Sinar back actually edit very well in LR3.

I have no more problems of stability with CS6, my exclusive Sinar's shooting program, because eXposure can not process the multishoot images. Please note that eXposure is no more developed by Sinar, who puts on its website on the "discontinued software" zone !!!

Please look here

My question is mainly to know who practice the multishoot, and to compare the use of converters with DNG images taken in this mode. The results are very different depending on whether one uses one or the other method.
