Profoto Continuous Lighting
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:20:28 pm »

Just got a newsletter linked to this video.  I especially like how they feature the Phase 645 and then the Red One... heh.

Conveniently I just bought 3 Chimeras with speed rings for Lowel Omnis and Profoto.

It's nice system, if you have Profoto gear right now. Do you know prices ?? I need to test it.
I love Briese Light. For me it is the best that I ever seen (Just from a box) but it's very expensive. If you try it, you are gone. It;s like a drug.

The Alexa seems the choice for a lot of died in the wool film dp's.

I haven't compared them, but I think Arri is not going to give up on that market easily.

The RED I do know and am learning more and more about it as the days/weeks//months go on and i find it more than amazing.

Yes it's a little quirky but so far dead reliable.  Yes, it's big at least the original RED ONE and yes it has some limitations, but if you work it and learn it, it all becomes second nature and it's a serious piece of kit.

Considering it cost less than an IQ 80 it's bloody amazing and I don't know how RED does it, don't care, but I do know it shoots a beautiful motion file that has a lot of depth.

Maybe the Arri is better, but for the price, nothing so far is.

Now in regards to the profoto hmi's, I haven't tried the new ones, in some ways loved the old ones, but they were underpowered.

Regardless if your going to shoot motion and stills with 800 watts and try to use the same lights, your going to have to have a still camera that goes to a minimum of 400 iso dead clean, probably 800 iso.

It takes a lot to pull focus and have a fairly quick shutter speed ( at lest 120th of a second) to make the same lighting work for motion and stills because even if you resize the RED to a smaller 2:3/4:3 format with any movement the lights are going to be much further away than most still sets.

This week were shooting motion and stills, the stills vertical and horizontal, mostly vertical, but I'd give anything for a square format RED camera that shot a pristine still.

It's a lot of work to always add that second camera and redo a scene, even a simple one and as of today, for us, shooting motion is not an option, it's a deal breaker for our last few projects.

I'm lucky in that my subject never moves.... barring earthquakes.  So I think the 800's would be plenty wattage for me as long as they hold their own against ambient.  I found the Kobold 400's to be much more light than I needed so....  I just wish HMI was as easy to dial down as strobe.

Alexa         2k res  65k price
Red One  4.5k res  25k price

hmm... Of course I'm a little biased ;)

Well, you're never ever going to see the difference between 4.5k and 2k on the internet, or even in HD.  It comes down to projection, the ability to crop into footage and even being able to pull stills out on occasion.

Most cinematographers agree that when it comes to tonal and color rendition the two cameras are on par.

I love my Arri Mattebox and Follow Focus, they make great stuff and if you want ProRes HD out of camera it's the Alexa, but if you need resolution it's the Red... whatever tool tightens the nut.

Chris, check out the Phantom in the blog linked...I ignored that brand, it seems to be like the new Phase sensors but for video. 65mm sensor and 4K, I imagine that it burns the national bank too.

The Phantoms are used largely for high speed frame rates (where they kick everyone else's ass)  very cool stuff.

Red promises 645 and even 6x17 sensors down the road...  You know, some day.

Sorry...was it a thread on Profoto? Ok, a question regarding Profoto is that I don't got it clear if the zoom reflector works on those series made for stills+video and if you can actually adapt all kinds of accessories that where designed for strobes (shapers, reflectors etc...). Also, does Profoto give any indication of the max frame/sec usable?

Edit: sorry, I wasn't looking at the right place in their website and I just got this infos in their product video, and YES, it does all that. They say up to 60 fps.
I like this company, they are serious.
