funny they used a red and not an alexa... the red is a cheaper camera than the phase one...
The Alexa seems the choice for a lot of died in the wool film dp's.
I haven't compared them, but I think Arri is not going to give up on that market easily.
The RED I do know and am learning more and more about it as the days/weeks//months go on and i find it more than amazing.
Yes it's a little quirky but so far dead reliable. Yes, it's big at least the original RED ONE and yes it has some limitations, but if you work it and learn it, it all becomes second nature and it's a serious piece of kit.
Considering it cost less than an IQ 80 it's bloody amazing and I don't know how RED does it, don't care, but I do know it shoots a beautiful motion file that has a lot of depth.
Maybe the Arri is better, but for the price, nothing so far is.
Now in regards to the profoto hmi's, I haven't tried the new ones, in some ways loved the old ones, but they were underpowered.
Regardless if your going to shoot motion and stills with 800 watts and try to use the same lights, your going to have to have a still camera that goes to a minimum of 400 iso dead clean, probably 800 iso.
It takes a lot to pull focus and have a fairly quick shutter speed ( at lest 120th of a second) to make the same lighting work for motion and stills because even if you resize the RED to a smaller 2:3/4:3 format with any movement the lights are going to be much further away than most still sets.
This week were shooting motion and stills, the stills vertical and horizontal, mostly vertical, but I'd give anything for a square format RED camera that shot a pristine still.
It's a lot of work to always add that second camera and redo a scene, even a simple one and as of today, for us, shooting motion is not an option, it's a deal breaker for our last few projects.
IMO
