« on: May 13, 2010, 12:46:50 pm »

Hi folks,

A release candidate version of Camera Raw 6.1 is now available on the Adobe Labs site:

http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_6.1

Contains some new camera support, plus the lens corrections tools that Tom Hogarty previously demonstrated here:

Ditto for me!

I'm really enjoying the changes in Photoshop CS4.

Annnnd?

Doesn't "Annnnd" mean the same as "so what!"
Whats your point?

Eric,
A special thank you for you taking the time to post this link, as we all know this has been your baby this last year.

Well, it hasn't crashed yet. ACR 6.0 was crashing about half the time I tried to process raw files. So that's a major plus. The lens correction tools are very cool -- and I see they have most of my lenses on the list. All in all, great job.

quick question about the lens correction:
Is ACR 'smart' enough to apply the correction based on the EXIF data? Or do you have to select the lens from a list each time you process a file?

Better NR and lens correction. Hmmm.....is this gonna make me spend countless hours re-processing all my RAWs?

Yes...assuming a lens profile exists...you can use the manual controls in the event there isn't a profile.

It has to be enabled first in ACR 6.1. Then you have the choice of default, auto or custom.

The new features in 6.1 are great.

However, the handling of both the Hand Tool and the Scroll Bar have gone to the dogs - both in 6.0 and 6.1 (I'm PC/Vista x64bit)

Smooth flowing they ain't, unfortunately. I've read that opening files via CS5 improves this, but my workflow is built around Bridge, so that's a non-starter for me.

Pity.

Maybe they'll sort it out.

I still get lockups going right into ACR.  Better with 6.1 but still a problem.

The automatic lens correction is by far the most useful feature for me, but some lenses still don't have profiles (e.g. Canon 24mm F1.4 L II) and it looks like some profiles are less than perfect. It leaves some chromatic aberration on shots taken with my old Canon 20D and 10-22mm lens. Hopefully these issues will be resolved in time.

You can make your own custom profiles with Adobe's Lens Profile Creator:

System: Vista x64bit.

Was prompted to install Bridge and ACR updates yesterday, which I did.

Further impressions.............

1. ACR 6.1 is the slowest ACR I've used. It is always playing catch-up. Any adjustments made appear after the fact.

2. However, I've had no crashes.

3. The lens correction feature is excellent. When I'm not using the 1Ds or Hasselblad, I use my beloved G9. Lens correction for this is superb. I take the point made above about some chromatic abberration remaining -sometimes. But, after using the auto setting, I have tried clicking on the Manual tab and choosing Defringe: All Edges. This appears to do the trick.

Any suggestions about Bridge/ACR settings/preferences to address questions about speed and smoothness. To be honest, I'm so much concerned about speed as the clunkiness (lack of smoothness) of the way ACR is now working.

Thanks.

I'm also finding the speed much slower however I can see that it's due to the applying lens corrections by default, it's a lot of work going into each file.

Ben,

You're right!

I don't apply by default. I apply manually, as in, I tick Enable Lens Profile Corrections and make the relevant selections.

I've just tried working on a file without the lens corrections in place and it's a smooth as glass!

So, the solution seems to be to apply the lens corrections at the very end of the workflow, just before saving out the file.

Thanks!
