Yawn.

If you're not involved with Hasselblad in any way then I could understand.  For those who do have the Hasselblad H3, looking at H4, then this is of some interest.  We shall see when the bodies-systems get shipped.  Since we support Hasselblad I'm excited about the development of the new body.  Unlike other brands, Contax 645, Kodak DCS digital back, where there were no improvements or developments, Hasselblad is bringing out new product and accessories and trying to be a leader/driving force in the market.

I do have an H3, I'm just yawning because this is old news. The real question here is WHEN will the H4 be released?

Our rep was here yesterday and units were ready and a shipment was being prepared.  Units should be here in the next week or two.  We were told mid-January, so far on time.  Word on the H4D-60 is March.  They're working on long exposures over the standard 64 seconds.

Is that the camera they first announced in Oct 2008 with a planned availability in April 2009?

I must say that I am impressed by your tolerance with your equipment suppliers. You should drop by in Tokyo and explain to my customers how they should treat me... around here a 2 weeks delay with anything shows up in executive dashboards...

Cheers,
Bernard

Rich, Do you know if the long exposure improvement is just for the H4D60 or does it include the H4D50 also,  as I have ordered one of these?

regards, David

Yes that's the one!  They're not the only manufacture that makes announcements but then doesn't deliver.  Hasselblad has been very deliberate in not releasing product or software before they are confident of it's functionality.  I appreciate that they don't compromise on that principal.  Others have and it only causes more problems to the product and manufactures reputation.

The long exposure capability is already working very well in H3D 39's & 50's which you all know are Kodak CCD's.  Exposures are being done in minutes with no calibration exposure.  The H4D-60 in a new sensor for them and they are working on the long exposure capability to make sure the quality meets their high standards.

Hasselblad and PhaseOne are running after pixels  ...  a FF medium format with 30 MP will come maybe from Pentax , with a decent price

You know, I have to propose a counter point being that if anything, 35mm has been the ones running after pixels. Since Canon went full frame 24 x 36, they have increased the megapixel count from 11 to 16 to 21, and soon 28 - 32. All without increasing the sensor size, so specifically only adding megapixels.

By contrast, medium format has increased the sensor size along with increasing megapixels and I expect them to continue. If medium format continues to increase sensor size (as I expect), it is logical that megapixels will increase as well. I see every advantage to this as long as there is technology which allows a choice of resolution. If a 100MP product emerges, there must be an option to shoot at a much lower resolution.

I understand the sentiment of I don't want more pixels, but I also believe there are image quality advantages to more pixels beyond image scalability.

It would be interesting to have a full frame 645, or 6x6, or 6x7 30 megapixel product, but I would rather have an 80 megapixel 6x7 that allows me also to shoot at 30 megapixels.

That said, I do have to say hats off to Canon for the G11.

an Epson 3880  A2+ is enough for me , I like very much MF but I don't see any advantages to get 100 MP or even 50 MP  for my needs (and I am not the only one ) it is heavy for the computer,  expensive...
the P25 + was a very good Digital Back or the H3D-22 II

but for what price ? ... and with 80 mp  you will shoot @ f/22 ?

Yes, if the sensor is larger and the photosites are then not smaller. That is one advantage medium format has over 35mm, there is still head room.

In addition to core image quality, that is one of the traditional and still current advantages and reasons for users to shoot medium format (or large sensor, whatever) is to have a larger imaging area than 35mm.

but MF  must not be necessary 65 MP or even more
I have sold my P45 a few month ago and actually there is nothing in MF for my needs :  FF , long exposure, 30 to 39 mp maximum, decent screen and batteries, good central focus ... is it too much asked for the price ?

I have a P45+, and I own a Nikon D3x, and I have to say that the Nikon punches far above its weight at 1600 ISO. I was really amazed after I got it - the fact that images are focused sharp and the fairly pleasant looking noise. The MF digital makes nice images but the body is a joke.

I don't understand why the MF kit needs to be stuck in the prehistory of digital cameras while requiring proprietary bodies - why can't someone simply make a $300 back for the old Hasselblad V series which are quite adequate for studio use ?

canon and nikon have added more pixels.....but along with that they increased DR, ISO range, speed, pixel depth.....

DMF has added pixels....increased the sensor size a tiiiiiiny bit to finally call it full frame (after calling it full frame anyway, in hass's case)....i don't really see any of the other improvements....things we have been calling for....

sorry but i can't even see an improvement in the screens on the latest backs....

i and many others have asked for a 6x7 back 30mpix up to 800 or 1600....at that size higher iso should be possible? imagine the DR on that thing.....but a lot harder to market then 50 or 60mpix, which really don't mean much and require a tripod and 1/500 for ultimate quality....

H4D...huge YAWN.....

Certainly possible, without many doubts, the real question being: how many will buy it, knowing that the price won't certainly be inferior as any of the current top-of-the-line products, probably even much more.

A 6x7 back is the only thing that would bring me back to MFDB, so long as I could get a nice 800/1600 file out of it.  I know some people would pay $100k.

I'd rent!

When I look at the crop on the RZ screen with my Aptus 54s, I think what a shame it is to waste all that good real estate.

I think my only point is that why would medium format manufacturers restrict their 6 x7 sensors to 30 megapixels when it is likely you will be shooting 30+ megapixels with 24 x 36 sensors? As long as there is an option to not have to shoot huge files via Sensor Plus, etc, I don't see any reason to restrict the resolution if you have the real estate to saturate with. If medium format options were limited to 30 megapixels there would be an outcry from many, many users.
