Pocket PC for viewing images

MAYBE if you shoot JPEG, which isn't so practicle.  Most newer handhelds have CF slots which can read up to 4Gb.  From there, it's just getting the software to view JPEGs which I am sure is already standard.

With RAW:
You'd need software for the PocketPC O/S, which I've never seen advertised.  Even if you shoot RAW+JPEG, you'd need the JPEG extractor (the JPEGs are embedded in the RAW for my D30, but don't know about the 1D/1Ds).



Canon's don't have Wi-Fi yet.  When they do, then that will become an option to transfer files to the PocketPC.

Maybe someday we'll have Wi-Fi remote capture.  That'd be cool!

Thanks, but I was thinking about doing it while the images are in the camera - using the PocketPc as a larger viewing screen like the Leaf.

A tv input card used with a Pocket PC that has a compact flash slot could be used with the TV out signal from the DSLR.  Here is one possible product:

Michael's review of the Leaf back got me to thinking - is there any way to attach a Pocket PC to a digital slr, such as a Canon 10D?  Working tethered to a laptop is impossible in the field, but, as the review shows, the Pocket PC is much more workable.

I just picked up a SmartDisk Flashtrax, which is a 30gb storage device with a 3 1/2 screen. So far, seems to work nicely, although copying off a microdrive is slow. Has USB2 to connect to your main PC. It will display Canon Raw for both my D60 and 10D. Not sure about other formats. Cost $500, about the same as a Pocket PC. Check www.smartdisk.com

PocketLoupe allows you to view JPEGS, TIFFs and RAW files on the Pocket PC.  I've used it with a compact flash card and Nikon NEFs, but it's supposed to work with the Canon format as well.  Whether or not it will support the configuration mentioned is a question, but it might be an option.

While I am clueless as to the technical feasability of hooking up a Pocket PC to a D-SLR, the basic idea is excellent. I have had a demo of the Leaf Valeo 11 with the dedicated Pocket PC. It is the only LCD screen that has the size, the contrast and the resolution to really permit you to evaluate the quality of the digital image in a critical way. All of the other LCD screens with D-SLRs are ok for looking at histograms, but, to me, are useless for image evaluation because they are too small and too difficult to see in the field. The iPaq for the Leaf backs, OTOH, is amazing. Yes, it is still another piece of gear to schlep around and keep track of, but the tradeoff of convenience for functionality may very well be worthwhile for many users.
